Leaving the Brazilian island of Fernando de Noronha, we are travelling from 4 degrees south, to 5 degrees north. That’s 1500 miles in the stormy windlass doldrums…. Then the engine cuts out.... www.sailingnandji.com Before any big passage, the key in making the miles ahead more enjoyable, there’s two basic necessities needed: food and diesel. Have plenty of both, and you can make the miles ahead a lot more comfortable. With an equator crossing coming up, we need plenty of diesel, but we have used than we expected arriving to Brazil and it is hard to fill a sailboat full carrying only 60 litres at a time, but a little each day and one day, the tanks will be full. Now for the food provisions. Shopping in Portuguese has been a fun novelty, though after months on the move since leaving the supermarkets of south Africa, we are starting to get low in all our staple items that are a sailors best friend.
