Hi and welcome aboard @SailingAstridTheWombat We are Gav and Shezz and two and a half years ago we bought our Beneteau Oceanis 430 sailboat with absolutely no sailing experience and jumped straight into the deep end of liveaboard sailing. Our very first passage was just over 700 nautical miles, launching us headfirst into the world of bluewater cruising, learning to sail, and real life at sea. Since that moment, we’ve been fully immersed in boat life, documenting the journey of turning a production cruising sailboat into a capable, self-sufficient home for full-time liveaboard life. From major sailboat upgrades and off-grid power systems to everyday maintenance and skills building, we have been learning what it truly takes to own, sail, and live on a boat while preparing to sail around the world. Island Head Creek was meant to be a safe place to wait out the weather… but this turned into the hardest week of our sailing adventure so far. After leaving Rosslyn Bay and continuing our liveaboard sailing journey north along the Queensland coast, we arrive at Island Head Creek expecting some much-needed protection from the weather. Instead, we’re faced with 30+ knot winds, a constantly rolling sailboat, brutal seasickness, sleepless nights and serious power problems. Being stuck on a boat in bad weather is one thing, but when your Victron Energy system isn’t working properly, your batteries are running low and then your generator breaks down, things suddenly become a whole lot more stressful. With the boat rolling relentlessly at anchor, even simple jobs become difficult — and at times, we’re both struggling with seasickness and barely able to function. This episode gives you a very real look at the reality of living aboard a sailboat and what happens when the dream of cruising and travelling the world by sailboat isn’t quite as glamorous as it looks. We troubleshoot our electrical and battery problems, speak with the electricians who installed our system, attempt to use the generator to restore our batteries, and deal with the uncertainty of being stuck in an exposed anchorage while the weather continues to hammer us. For us, this was a huge learning experience about liveaboard sailing, boat systems, anchoring in bad weather, managing power on a sailboat and dealing with seasickness offshore.
