When the AC72s of the 34th America’s Cup first lifted off on their foils they attained great speeds of more than 50 miles per hour, or close to three times faster than the wind, which few of us could ever have imagined. In fast these boats turned out to be much faster than even the designers expected. However these great speeds also brought great danger, which first came to light when Oracle Team USA capsized their AC72 during a practice session in San Francisco Bay after passing through the so-called “death zone”. But what exactly is the “death zone”? That’s exactly what we’re going to find out in this video. Modern sailing boats can sail in most directions relative to the wind, except straight upwind, with the fastest point of sail being a beam reach, where the wind is perpendicular to the direction of travel, or sailing across the wind. Race organizers know that sailing back and forth on a beam reach would just get boring for everybody, so they design courses with upwind and downwind legs instead, because it’s more challenging for the boats and their crew. Boats can’t sail straight upwind, but they can sail upwind at around 45 degrees to the true wind, so they tack back and forth in a zigzag pattern to get upwind. But going downwind, they also gybe in a zigzag pattern because it’s faster than sailing dead downwind, as they are still sailing across the wind, AC72 crews put the boat together on shore with the right size wing for the forecast conditions, to optimize efficiency for upwind and downwind sailing. But there are two points on the course where the boat has to pass through a beam reach, at the upwind and downwind turning marks. This is the most powerful point of sail, so the boat has a tendency to accelerate rapidly out of control, earning the name “death zone” by popular media. Many fast multihulls must deal with the “death zone”, but most have soft sails, so they can easily twist off the top of the main sail to depower it, which also moves the power down lower on the sail, and makes it easier to pass through the “death zone”, with the lower part of the sail still driving the boat forward. But the AC72s have rigid wings so you can’t twist off the top, and the whole wing needs to be eased to depower it. And if you depower too much you’ll fall of the foils, which is also slow and dangerous. Oracle Team USA had been practicing on San Francisco Bay in a building breeze, so they were on the verge of being overpowered even before they entered the “death zone” as they attempted to switch from upwind to downwind sailing. They were hit by a gust in the middle of the Death Zone, the boat accelerated rapidly, they were unable to depower the sails fast enough or turn out of the Death Zone because their rudder came out of the water, so they lost control and capsized. Thankfully nobody was hurt, however it did set the team back several weeks and cost a few million dollars to repair the boat. Somehow, they launched the comeback of the century and managed to win the 34th America’s Cup. ROUGH WEATHER & PAN PAN call during this trip Sailing Mediterranean Sea. We had quite some rough winds and listened to channel 16 closely. There was a PAN PAN call and a vessel missing. For us a reminder of how dangerous sailing can be and how depending we are on mother nature and on other vessels nearby that need to come to the rescue. Some big squalls with some reasonable waves and strong winds. Sailing offshore in the Mediterranean sea can be challenging and extreme sailing. So an episode of almost no bullshit just sailing. Anchoring is a great way to get away with your friends and family and explore uninhabited locations. Plus it’s a lot cheaper than staying at marinas. But lots of people are nervous about anchoring, and wonder how exactly that chunk of steel hanging from the bow keeps your boat in one place? Many people find it to be a bit of a mystery, and that doesn’t help with their nervousness. You really want to be confident in your anchoring in order to get a good night sleep, or if you’re leaving your boat to explore some remote islands, especially if the wind picks up. So I wanted to show you exactly how an anchor behaves on the sea floor. I found a nice popular anchorage where the tide had gone out, exposing the same sandy bottom that the boats in the distance are anchoring in, so we can see exactly what is going on, without the sea being in the way. The worst thing to do is to simply throw your anchor and chain overboard in a heap and hope for the best. That is literally just rolling the dice. Instead you want to lower your anchor to the seabed, and then lay the chain along the bottom. You want the pull on the anchor to be almost horizontal, and for that you need to measure the distance from the bow roller to the seabed at high tide, and pay out at least five times that much chain, which is known as 5:1 scope, so the anchor and chain lies along the seabed. Without enough chain the pull will be too vertical and the anchor will just drag along, until you let out enough chain to get the horizontal pull. If the anchor is set, but you didn’t let out enough chain and the tide goes up, your anchor could pull out. But with 5:1 scope the anchor should stay buried with gradual wind and tide shifts . More drastic shifts might even pull the anchor out, but it should reset with enough scope. So the secret is having that 5:1 scope. Of course your anchor could be fouled with kelp or an old shoe, but the first thing you should try if your anchor is not staying put is letting out more chain. Now all we need is some sails and we are ready to get wet.   Plus, we reveal the completed installation of what has no doubt been the most debated piece of equipment of this entire boat building saga. Never in my wildest dreams did I think building a new boat would be this much work.  And we’re not even the ones doing the labor.  Our days and nights are filled to the brim with decisions to be made, parts to be purchased and logistics to be planned (oh how I have NOT missed maritime bureaucracy).  The closer handover day gets, the more complicated the logistics seem to get.  Boat insurance for SE Asia looks expensive and potentially difficult to obtain.  We’re still searching for the port of least resistance to check into the Philippines and sailing out of China, well that is a whole other kettle of fish.  So many adventures ahead with so many variables to plan for.  We have gained a boat load of knowledge over the past 2 years (much more than expected) and we still have soooo much more to learn.  We are fortunate HH Catamarans has been so open to letting us roam free in the yard, film without abandon and ask 1001 questions.  Thank you so much for being a part of this untethered journey with us.  It’s been a rollercoaster of a year, and I don’t expect 2024 will be anything less.  So, rest up, have the most wonderful holiday break and we will see you in the new year! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WE’RE JASON AND NIKKI WYNN.
