Marjolein doesn't really feel like going into the water in the dark, but together we jump into the deep :) On the 17th of April 2020 we left marina Port Ghalib in Egypt, heading south towards Sudan and Djibouti and finally Maldives. We will take it easy, enjoy the beautiful reefs of the red sea and keep an eye on the corona regulations of the ports we pass. Since many countries are closed we don't know where we will be allowed to go on land again, but we can survive 4 month without seeing anybody :) This journey is only a small part of our trip that started 2 years ago. In Spain we decided to go with our own boat, and in no time we were the happy owners of 'Messenger'. We left may 2018 and started vlogging from the beginning, we made 15 minute video's of our adventures, the nature and the many special people we met. This week, we have a near trailerable Nimble 24 sailboat for sale (a yawl even!!). It's a 1990 Nimble 24 Yawl. The owner is a now-retired cardiologist who understands how to make things better. He's improved the rudder, extended the mizzen mast 2' taller, and has this great little ship ready for the next owner. The old sailors addage “You can’t control the wind but you can adjust the sails” is exactly how we live these days. In this episode we head toward Morotai to explore the surrounding Islands and catch up to Wild One again. We visit Pulau Dodola, Pulau Zum Zum and Galo-Galo. As we head north we cross a massive garbage patch and our props are fouled by all of the plastic junk. Brendan has to dive in and cut the rubbish from our props and we are disgusted by what we encounter. Our new friends on Tutkum drop us a line to tell us that the surf is pumping in Supu, Northern Halmahera, so we high tail it for a much needed distraction from our broken hearts. We end our time witnessing a spectacular lunar eclipse. Nature is always restorative, it's humanity that stinks. Anyway...Excelsior!...Onwards and Upwards! We started out this leg of our trip with an overnight passage up to Fraser Island. But to get into Fraser from the south, you have to cross the Wide Bay Bar, aka "The Mad Mile." It has a reputation for being dangerous, so we timed our crossing quite carefully. Once inside, we celebrated with some drone flying, paddleboarding and enjoying some amazing sunsets. The weather didn't really cooperate for us to head out to the Great Barrier Reef, so instead we left Fraser and set sail for Great Keppel Island. There was still more boatwork we had to do, so we crossed that off our to-do list and then enjoyed exploring the island. And then our last passage for this video (see we were really moving!) was up to the famous cruiser hangout at Middle Percy Island. Unfortunately, we didn't get the true Percy experience, as we were the only cruisers there at the time, but it was still cool to get on the island and leave a mark for people to follow!
