I have been getting to know Monaco Yacht Club a lot better this year, and there is far more to it than meets the eye. Amongst the many events that they organise is the "Energy Boat Challenge", designed to motivate universities and companies to dig deep into their resources and find alternative methods to propel a boat.

There is no wind as we are traveling up the beautiful the Norwegian coast. We have sickness onboard but life is not too bad an we can't complain since the water is flat as a mirror. We are on our way north to Spitsbergen/Svalbard and we sail the beautiful Helgeland coast and will pass the beautiful Lofoten with its small wonderful anchorages, so make sure you subscribe following us going north! It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. The plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. We get hauled out onto the dry dock in Marsden Cove in New Zealand and it has to be one of the cleanest , well managed boat yards we have ever been to . The Boat yard staff were so extremely helpful and accommodating , the facilities were great and there was even a herb garden and kitchen to cook and wash up in every night! The only major challenge we had to face was the adverse weather that year and a couple of cyclones that came through. But this was more down to climate change . I say no more. We made a few upgrades to out boat. 1100 square feet gennaker sail by Quantum Sails, Selden bowsprit and Selden top down asymmetrical spinnaker furler. It's a mighty sail!!  :)

In this video I replace the nav lights. It sounds like such an easy task, but in reality there are no such thing as an easy boat project. I also replace sheets and halyards and make sure they match the colors of the nav lights to better remember which color is to port or starboard side.
