We set sail from Bangor to Peel, on the Isle of Man. The outbound leg brought headwinds, forcing us to rely on the engine for nearly half the journey. We arrived at night, carefully backing into our berth under the dark sky—just ahead of a forecast storm with lightning on the horizon. While in Peel, we explored its Viking past, from the medieval fortress of Peel Castle to the island's unique legacy: the Tynwald, the world’s oldest continuous parliament. The return sail was everything we hoped for. A steady beam wind pushed us along at over 6 knots average—without a single minute of engine use until Donaghadee Sound. Sailing Free Spirit. We packed up the RV for a 2 week vacation as we make our way to Annapolis for the US Sailboat show and YouTube booth. We made stops in Savannah, GA and to Annapolis. We took some very good friends from Cairns over to Fitzroy Island for a long weekend of fun, snorkelling, and some much-needed time to reconnect. With a Spanish Mackerel on the line on our way over, there was plenty of fresh fish to share with the whole gang. The snorkelling was incredible – healthy coral, schools of colourful fish, and then a truly magical moment when a curious turtle swam right up to the camera. It felt calm, connected and utterly unforgettable – one of those encounters that reminds you why the ocean has such a hold on us. It was so special to share this time with people who truly matter. A final catch-up back in Trinity Inlet – capped off with some unexpected fireworks – was the perfect ending to a weekend that had it all. Thanks Cairns, how lovely to see you again. Inside the Market returns for November 2025 with a straight talking look at what is really happening in the yacht world right now. In this episode, Berthon International’s Sue Grant is joined by Alan Baines, Managing Director of Berthon USA, to unpack refit trends, pricing reality, and why some yachts are quietly selling while others sit and gather dust. They begin in Palma, where Berthon’s refit and service operation is busier than ever, but the profile of work has shifted. The focus now is on seaworthiness, safety and essential maintenance, not teak decks and shiny cosmetics. Owners are spending to keep boats safe and moving, not to win beauty contests. Across the Atlantic, the US brokerage market is surprisingly active, helped by one key factor: realistic sellers. Alan explains that where owners accept genuine market value, yachts are changing hands. Where they cling to 2022 pricing, they simply do not. Overpriced yachts remain a major drag on the market, often the result of brokers over promising to secure the listing in the first place. That leads to one of the central themes of this episode. The market is more diverse and specialised than ever, and no broker can credibly be an expert in every segment. Choosing someone who truly understands your type of yacht may not support an over optimistic asking price, but it dramatically improves the chances of a sale within a sensible time frame. Price remains the main driver of deals. Extra equipment and long option lists rarely raise the headline number. They make a yacht easier to sell, not inherently worth more. In a cautious, cost conscious environment, buyers reward value, not gadget count. Presentation also matters. With a good choice of yachts on the market, buyers are deeply project averse. Cluttered interiors, obvious deferred maintenance and “fixer upper” listings are sticking. Clean, de personalised, well prepared yachts are the ones that get serious viewings and offers. Location is the final, often overlooked, factor. As winter bites and charter flights shut down, anything parked in a hard to reach corner of the Med or Caribbean becomes difficult to show. If a visit involves multiple connections and an overnight stay, most buyers will simply not go. Until flight schedules resume in spring, badly located yachts are at a real disadvantage. Across the conversation, Sue and Alan keep circling back to seven simple truths that define this market right now: 1.Refit demand is strong, but focused on safety and seaworthiness. 2.In the USA, deals are happening where sellers accept true market pricing. 3.There are still too many overpriced yachts, often the result of over promising to win listings. 4.Specialist brokers who know a segment deeply give owners the best chance of a timely sale. 5.Yachts are selling on price. Extra kit helps them sell, but does not add real value. 6.Poorly presented yachts are being left behind. Buyers do not want projects. 7.With winter here, remote locations make yachts hard to show and harder to sell. Il NAVTEX (NAVigational TEleX) è un servizio internazionale automatico che trasmette via radio bollettini di navigazione, meteo e informazioni urgenti sulla sicurezza marittima direttamente alle navi, usando frequenze sulle onde medie (518 kHz per l'inglese, 490 kHz per la lingua locale) e onde corte (4209.5 kHz). Si usa un ricevitore dedicato (integrato o collegato a PC) che stampa automaticamente i messaggi (Avvisi ai Naviganti, Meteo, Ghiaccio, SAR, ecc.) o si può utilizzare un ricevitore dedicato bluetooth come il nasa marine bt3 mostrato nel video che permette di visualizzare gli MSI (marittime security information) direttamente sullo schermo dello smartphone o del tablet, permettendo di selezionare le aree e i tipi di avvisi da ricevere per rimanere aggiornati e garantire la sicurezza in mare. il NAVTEX ci fornisce informazioni essenziali (meteo, pericoli, avvisi ai naviganti) in modo automatico e gratuito, essendo parte integrante del sistema GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System). Frequenze: 518 kHz (internazionale, inglese), 490 kHz (nazionale/locale), 4209.5 kHz (mondiale). Tipi di Messaggi: Codificati per tipo (es. 'A' per avvisi navigazione, 'B' per meteo, 'D' per SAR/pirateria). Si imposta il ricevitore in base alla propria posizione e interesse selezionando Area (NAVAREA es. Mediterraneo). Selezionando i Tipi di Messaggio (Message Type), si filtrano i tipi di avvisi desiderati (es. solo meteo e pericoli). L'apparato ascolta le frequenze, identifica i messaggi rilevanti per le impostazioni scelte e li stampa o li mostra a schermo, spesso emettendo un allarme acustico per messaggi urgenti. Si leggono i messaggi identificandoli dal codice alfanumerico di 4 lettere cifre (A, B, C, ecc.) per conoscerne il contenuto. In sintesi, è uno strumento fondamentale per ogni navigante che desidera ricevere aggiornamenti sulla sicurezza e sulle condizioni meteo in modo semplice e automatizzato. Ho installato a bordo il navtex Nasa Marine BT3 è un ricevitore NAVTEX Bluetooth che decodifica e memorizza bollettini meteo e di sicurezza marittima, trasmettendoli via Bluetooth a smartphone o tablet (Android e iOS) tramite un'app dedicata, senza necessità di display integrato, offrendo un sistema compatto, a basso consumo (12V) e ideale per la navigazione continua, ricevendo su frequenze 518 e 490 kHz. Caratteristiche Principali: Ricezione e Memorizzazione: Riceve messaggi NAVTEX 24/7 su doppia frequenza (518 kHz internazionale e 490 kHz nazionale) e li salva in memoria interna (fino a 400 messaggi). Connettività Bluetooth: Invia i dati a dispositivi mobili (Android/iOS) per la visualizzazione, permettendo di consultare i messaggi quando necessario. App Dedicata: Funziona con un'app gratuita (per Android) che consente di filtrare, cercare e gestire i messaggi ricevuti. Antenna Inclusa: Fornito con un'antenna (H-Vector o Serie 2) e cavo, pronto per l'installazione. Basso Consumo: Progettato per funzionare ininterrottamente, consuma pochissima energia (circa 27-40 mA). Messaggi Selezionabili: Permette di scegliere quali messaggi (meteo, burrasche, avvisi) visualizzare, escludendo quelli non necessari. They are also back on record pace, 196 nautical miles ahead of the record pace set by Francis Joyon on IDEC Sport in 2017 of, 40 days 23 h 30 m 30 sec. And have a 10-hour and 59-minute lead over Francis Joyon’s crew.
