In this video we explore the ups and downs of Bermuda in the winter months. Would we spend the winter in Bermuda again? We would definitely spend a winter in Bermuda again, but there are some things we would do differently. Bermuda is an expensive location, so the more you can stock up on everything from food, to spares, and even supplies for boat projects, before you leave for Bermuda, the better off you will be. Water must be purchased in Bermuda, so a means to collect rain water, or a water maker would be a real cost saver. The frequent gales in Bermuda, means that you need to have good ground tackle that’s easy to deploy, or rent a mooring in a protective cove. In this video we also show you more of Bermuda, the royal dock yard, the Spirit of Bermuda. We also visit the Windy Bank Farm market on Saturday morning. Poppy hangs off the back while underway to see what might lie beneath as we sail through these breathtaking chain of islands. The Louisiades Archipelago in Papua New Guinea was formed through a mix of tectonic and volcanic activity. Situated at the boundary of the Pacific and Australian tectonic plates, the movement of these plates uplifted the land, while the volcanic eruptions created many of the islands. Over millions of years, erosion and changes in the sea levels further shaped this stunning archipelago. 🎥 Check Out the Full Video - Guided by Village Chief to Secret Limestone Cave (Ep17) 📍Location: Louisiade Archipelago, Papua New Guinea ☕ Support Our Journey ☞ https://buymeacoffee.com/onceuponareef Or 🎁 Send us a gift ☞ https://throne.com/onceuponareef 🌍 Follow us: 📸 INSTAGRAM: @onceuponareef & @wheres.poppy 💡 PATREON ☞ https://www.patreon.com/c/onceuponareef 🎥 Poppy's YouTube Channel ☞ https://www.youtube.com/wherespoppy 📧 BUSINESS INQUIRIES - onceuponareef@protonmail.com Hey there, we’re Ryan and Poppy, a couple of adventure junkie sailors out to explore the most amazing reefs and islands in the world. This was a unique custom job of a classic 1977 Islander 32, a timeless cruising sailboat designed by renowned naval architect Robert Perry! This 32-foot sloop, built by Islander Yachts in Costa Mesa, California, is perfect for coastal cruising, weekend getaways, or even extended voyages. 📋 Specifications Year: 1977 Make/Model: Islander 32 Length Overall (LOA): 32 feet Beam: 11 feet Draft: 5.33 feet (standard fin keel) or 4 feet (shoal draft version) Hull Material: Solid fiberglass with plywood-cored deck Displacement: ~10,400 lbs Ballast: 4,100 lbs (lead) Engine: Various options from production run, including Volvo Penta 13 HP diesel, Westerbeke 25 HP diesel, or Universal Atomic 4 gas (30 HP). Some models, like one listed in Virginia, feature a 2004 Westerbeke 30B diesel. Fuel Capacity: ~25-30 gallons Water Capacity: ~40-50 gallons Sail Area: ~450-500 sq ft (standard rig); tall rig: I: 44.5', J: 13.75', P: 38.91', E: 11.2' Additional Features: This one was featured with a custom solar panel that would allow them to stay anchored and have power consistantly, new refrigeration (some models, e.g., 2016 upgrade), Monitor windvane self-steering, and Achilles 310 dinghy (in some listings). 🛋️ Spacious Layout The Islander 32 MK II offers a surprisingly roomy and practical interior for its size, ideal for couples or small families: Staterooms: Forward Cabin: V-berth sleeps two, with storage lockers and access to the head for privacy. Main Salon: Convertible settees around a central fold-down table, sleeping up to three additional guests. Features long portlights for natural light and teak cabinetry for a classic aesthetic. Galley: L-shaped with a 2-burner propane stove/oven, sink, and refrigeration (upgraded in some models). Ample counter space and storage for extended cruising. Head: Manual or electric head (e.g., new Wilcox Crittenden in some spares) with sink and storage, accessible from the forward cabin or salon. Navigation Station: Dedicated chart table with space for electronics, perfect for planning passages. Cockpit: Spacious and updated with pedestal steering, new cushions, and easy access to primaries, making it comfortable for sailing or socializing. 🌟 Benefits Proven Design: Robert Perry’s design offers a balanced blend of stability and performance, with a moderate displacement hull suitable for coastal cruising or offshore passages (one documented circumnavigation). Affordable Classic: Priced typically between $20,000 and $35,000 (based on listings, e.g., YachtWorld and SailboatListings), it’s a budget-friendly entry into cruising with strong resale value. Easy to Sail: With modern sail-handling gear and a sloop rig, it’s manageable for shorthanded crews or couples, enhanced by features like a Monitor windvane in some models. Spacious & Livable: Sleeps up to five comfortably, with thoughtful storage, ventilation, and a timeless teak interior that feels larger than its 32 feet. Durable Construction: Solid fiberglass hull and lead ballast ensure longevity, though check for past blister repairs or main bulkhead issues, common in some units. Upgraded Features: Many examples include recent upgrades like new standing rigging (e.g., replaced ~6 years ago in some listings), updated electronics, and fresh antifouling/barrier coats. Versatile Use: Perfect for bay sailing, trips to Catalina, or weekend liveaboard use, with a layout that supports both adventure and comfort. ⚠️ Maintenance Tips Blister Check: Inspect the hull for blistering, a known issue with some Islander 32s. Verify if a barrier coat was applied during past bottom jobs. Rigging & Mast: Check standing rigging (replace every 10-15 years) and inspect the mast step for corrosion, a common issue in 1970s Islanders. Engine Maintenance: Ensure regular servicing of the diesel engine (oil, filters, impeller) for reliability, especially for older Volvo or Westerbeke units. Bulkhead Inspection: Examine the main bulkhead below for water damage or delamination, as reported by some owners. Deck & Seams: Look for soft spots in the plywood-cored deck and reseal fittings to prevent leaks. 🚤 Why Choose the 1977 Islander 32 MK II? The 1977 Islander 32 MK II is a classic cruiser that delivers performance, comfort, and affordability in a compact package. Its robust construction, versatile sail plan, and spacious interior make it ideal for coastal adventures, weekend escapes, or even bluewater dreams. Priced between $20,000 and $35,000, it’s a fantastic value for sailors seeking a well-built, character-filled vessel with a proven track record. Whether you’re new to sailing or a seasoned mariner, this Islander is ready for your next journey!

We explore the stunning San Blas Islands of Panama. A true paradise of turquoise waters, remote anchorages, and unexpected wildlife encounters. We dive through hidden coral caves and encounter a nurse shark. Life above the water is just as unforgettable, from exploring the charming palm studded islands and cooling off in turquoise water. As the sun sets, the adventure continues. We head into the mangroves for a bit of crocodile hunting, where glowing eyes and shallow reefs keep us on our toes. And one of our personal favs, a visit from a pod of wild dolphins.

The ARC is the original transocean rally for cruising yachts. Around 150 boats set sail every year in November, sailing from Las Palmas on the island of Gran Canaria to Rodney Bay on Saint Lucia. The rally attracts people of all ages and nationalities, sailing monohulls, multihulls and even motor boats from 27 feet to 100 feet (8.23m-32m). Over 8,000 boats have sailed with us to the Caribbean since the first ARC in 1986. The 2,700NM Atlantic crossing takes around 18-21 days for the average yacht. The record is 8 days and six hours, set by the maxi Rambler 88 (USA) in 2016. This year we are bringing you along with live broadcasted updates starting from Tuesday 18th of November and then every day at 16.00 UTC, until Sunday 23rd when the start will take place from 12.00 UTC. ► Deck equipment manufacturer Wichard unveiled a new anchor swivel at Metstrade, previewing it ahead of its commercial release. ► The purpose of this device is simple: to make anchor retrieval more reliable and avoid those frequent situations where the anchor comes up misaligned and refuses to sit properly on the bow roller. For multihulls, where the height of the bows and the geometry of the bow roller can sometimes make anchor handling tricky, this type of mechanical assistance is particularly useful. ► Available in three sizes, the swivel covers chain diameters from 6 to 14 mm and fits most anchors on the market. It is made of 316L stainless steel, an alloy chosen for its corrosion resistance, which is essential in this critical location of the ground tackle. The unit is positioned between the chain and the anchor, replacing a conventional swivel without adding excessive thickness. ► Its distinctive feature is its asymmetrical design. As Eric Butreau, Wichard’s Marketing and Communications Manager, explains: “The idea is to naturally guide the rotation of the anchor. Even if it arrives poorly oriented, the swivel realigns it with the bow roller.” ► This automatic repositioning limits jolts on the windlass, avoids the need for manual intervention, and smooths out the whole sequence of weighing anchor, even in bigger seas or when the multihull gets caught by a gust. ► Installation is deliberately simple: two pins to remove, a threadlocking glue to apply, and the part is in place in a matter of minutes. It is suitable for both new boats and refits, without any modification to the bow roller or chain lead. ► It is scheduled to go on sale in the first quarter of 2026, with a recommended retail price starting at €90 including VAT for the smallest model. ► Sign up for our newsletter and win a free two-month subscription to Multihulls World by clicking here: https://bit.ly/48JP1Vk ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests!

iFLY Foiling Days – Auckland, New Zealand (16 Jan – 14 Feb 2026) This footage was captured during the ongoing iFLY Foiling Days on Auckland’s North Shore. The event runs through 14 February 2026, with iFLY RAZZOR Pro hydrofoil catamarans sailed in real coastal sea conditions. Coaching sessions are available. Participation and enquiries: https://iflysail.com/contact/ Heavy-Weather Foiling – iFLY RAZZOR Pro This video documents an iFLY RAZZOR Pro sailed in strong, unstable wind with a developing sea state. Short-period waves, gust fronts and uneven pressure define the session. These are not beginner conditions. The boat is configured for high wind, using a 7.5 m storm mainsail on the 8.5 m mast. The reduced sail area limits aerodynamic load while maintaining balance and foil efficiency as wind strength and surface disturbance increase. Flight Control and Setup The RAZZOR Pro shown here is equipped with active main-foil differential rake control (MDT), enabling continuous adjustment of lift and righting moment while foiling. In these conditions, rake control becomes a primary tool for maintaining stable flight attitude through gust transitions and wave interaction, rather than relying on reactive steering or sail trim alone. Context This session represents one end of the iFLY operating range. From controlled foiling in moderate conditions to demanding heavy-weather sailing, the boat’s behaviour changes with setup, environment and sailor input. This clip reflects the upper limit of that range — where precision, timing and restraint define performance. Design Perspective The iFLY RAZZOR Pro combines carbon-composite construction, a four-foil configuration with automatic and manual control layers, and a refined flight-stability concept. The session illustrates how a high-performance foiling catamaran behaves in an unmodified coastal wind-wave environment, in contrast to flat-water testing, and why such conditions require confidence, discipline and an understanding of active foil systems. Join the iFLY Foiling Days The iFLY Foiling Days 2026 offer on-water demonstrations, coaching and technical exchange with the iFLY team and experienced sailors. For booking, setup discussions or attendance before 14 February 2026, please contact: https://iflysail.com/contact/

In Episode 4, we continue the restoration of Jinnie’s keel. Alan is back in the workshop, guiding us through the process in greater detail and explaining the careful work involved in restoring Jinnie’s original keel. Alan talks us through glue, shoe, acetone, and keel bolts, highlighting how the team must work quickly due to the rapid curing time of the epoxy. Alan and Jamie then bring the keel up and lift it back into Jinnie, marking a major milestone in the restoration. Some of the materials featured in this episode include @WestSystemEpoxy from our friends at @Marineindustrial4334, general-purpose oil-based mastic, and Jamie's much-loved Snap-on spanners. If you’re interested in traditional boatbuilding, restoration, or the craftsmanship that keeps historic working boats alive, this mini-documentary is for you. 👉 Subscribe to follow Jinnie’s restoration journey.

Most people don't avoid sailboats because they don't love sailing. They avoid sailboats because they're afraid of the work, the maintenance and the feeling that once you buy one... it owns you. In this video, I break that cycle. After decades around boats and years owning and sailing a simple, brutally honest sailboat, I'II show you how to own a sailboat without letting it own your time, your wallet, or peace of mind. I hope you enjoy this video. I can be reached directly at: smallsailboatbigwater@gmail.com Thanks for watching. Mitch

Laura Dekker first sailed a MiniCat in Bora Bora when on her epic solo circumnavigation 17 years ago. She soon had her own MiniCat on board her ketch and since then has been a MiniCat Ambassador. MiniCat are proud to support the Laura Dekker World Sailing Foundation and their work with youngsters teaching real life-skills whilst sailing across oceans. On board the young sailors have access to two MiniCat sailboats which are used to teach them sailing skills and also for them to have a lot of fun at anchor wherever in the world they are.

Is owning a sailboat really about sunsets, rum drinks, and absolute freedom? Let's not sugarcoat it: the brochures are lying to you. Before you sell everything and buy a boat, you need to understand the unvarnished reality of life on the water. From busted pumps and surprise bills to the psychological toll of living in a tiny space, boat ownership is a massive commitment that reshapes your time, money, and relationships. In this video, we break down the 10 Brutal Truths About Owning a Sailboat that most people only figure out the hard way: 💸 The Budget Black Hole: Why your initial cost projections will always be wrong. 🔧 The Maintenance Reality: Why you will spend more time fixing the boat than sailing it. ⛈️ The Weather Dictatorship: How the wind and swell completely take over your calendar. 🧠 The Happiness Myth: Why moving onto a boat won't fix your problems if you aren't already happy. ⚙️ The Gadget Trap: Why simple, mechanical systems will save your sanity offshore. If you are dreaming of living aboard, watch this first to make sure your expectations match reality. ⏱️ CHAPTERS: 00:00 Intro: The Reality of Boat Ownership 00:36 1. It Will Cost More Than You Planned, No Matter What 02:05 2. Something Is Always Broken 03:25 3. You’ll Spend More Time Maintaining Than Sailing 04:48 4. Weather Controls Your Schedule, Not You 06:12 5. Marinas Can Drain Your Budget Fast 07:36 6. Your Boat Won’t Make You Happy If You’re Not Already 08:50 7. Simple Systems Are Worth More Than Fancy Gadgets 10:17 8. Space Gets Smaller the Longer You Live Aboard 11:41 9. Not Everyone in Your Crew Will Love It the Same Way 13:01 10. ► Nearly three years after our first visit to the shipyard, our correspondent Jonathan took advantage of the launch (and sea trial, coming soon!) of the Voyage 510 to discover the Voyage Yachts facilities for himself. The company was founded in Cape Town in 1994 under the leadership of Kay Oldenburg. Here, a team of 50 employees builds bluewater cruising catamarans in small series - just 5 to 6 units per year. ► Since the launch of the Voyage 590 in 2020, the range had been limited to that single model, but it has now been expanded with the addition of the 510 last July. ► “What perhaps struck me the most,” Jonathan tells us, “was the team behind these multihulls: a close-knit, passionate group that feels almost like family. You can sense a real connection between the craftsmen, managers, and technicians. There’s a shared pride, a genuine desire to do things well, and above all a kindness that is reflected in the final product.” ► Sign up for our newsletter and win a free two-month subscription to Multihulls World by clicking here: https://bit.ly/48JP1Vk ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests! We are Eileen and Brown Councill. Welcome to our channel and a glimpse into our life adventure! 2020 was a year of uncertainty and change (for all of us, right?), but we overcame the challenges and decided it was time to chase our dream, to sail around the world! Did I mention that we had very NO sailing experience? Before leaving Qingdao, China, our home of 4 years, we sold almost all of our earthly possessions and started our international search to find the right sailboat that we would call "home." After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia. So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. We have much to learn as we travel the world on our floating home and we intend to document that journey and share it with you. We are so glad you have decided to join us, and we hope that you will find our story so compelling that it will inspire you to chase your dreams too!
