Small boat, shorthanded and with a small child. No worries. In this episode of Thule's adventures in 2003 you will experience both Barbados and Tobago. These are beautiful islands that many people don't get to visit. If you sail the ARC you will often not get to these islands. On our voyage we sailed from the Canaries directly to Barbados. After a few weeks there we sailed on to Tobago. After Tobago we sailed to Grenada, but that's in the next episode. As in this entire series, there are some important clips missing, and the video quality is not what it is today. This is back in 2003, 2 years before Youtube was launched. When we filmed this it was to send video cassettes back to Norway, so that those back home could follow our adventures. Now, over 20 years later, we have edited them to a format suitable for Youtube. Folding sails can be one of the argument-inducing activities around a boat. After working in a couple sail lofts growing up, I learning how to fold sails by doing it multiple times a day (lol, can you imagine the employee turnover at lofts if an argument broke out every time a sail was folded!). The trick is to take smaller folds at the leach, and allowing the person at the luff to stack the luff as they like, or taking bigger folds at the leach when the sail starts to stack past the luff. Hopefully this video helps prevent a few fights over folding sails.

Join us on an unforgettable boat journey as we sail south and encounter an incredible experience with dolphins swimming right up to our Nautitech 46 Open sailing catamaran. We were sailing in the beautiful waters near Cape Hatteras and Cape Lookout, taking in the stunning scenery and enjoying the thrill of being out on the open water, when suddenly we were surrounded by these intelligent and playful creatures. As we were while one sailing, we couldn't believe our eyes as the dolphins started to swim alongside our boat, their dorsal fins glinting in the sunlight. This amazing marine life encounter is a must-see for anyone who loves sailing and the ocean, and we feel lucky to have experienced it on our sailing catamaran. The dolphins seemed to be enjoying themselves just as much as we were, leaping and splashing in the waves as we sailed along. It was truly a magical moment, and one that we will never forget from our boat journey.

We’re going mad!!!! Squeak, squeak, squeak our sub-floor is squeaking and driving us crazy. When it was replaced five years ago apparently we didn’t install enough furring strips. That’s what we are doing in this episode along with replacing the vinyl click lock flooring that lays on top with carpet. Steve made the correct cuts the first time. He really knows how to cut a rug and Karen loves to get down on a nice new floor. Other updates include the progress of the dill we planted. Maybe we’ve lost our green thumbs because the dill doesn’t look so great. It’s been thinned and we’re keeping our fingers crossed that it will continue to grow and bring us delicious flavor in the future. Wondering about the basil we planted? It’s growing strong and steady. Karen gets teary eyed over the Sony video camera. It is no longer functioning. Those wonderful features of a Carl Zeiss lens, internal gimbal stabilization and a super clear 20X Zoom lens are no longer available. Steve will have to catch the wild life with our cell phones. She’s been modified for three simple reasons – to rate well, to win, and to be an exhilarating boat to race. Her QLD owner’s goal was spec to boat to IRC standards and to be able to compete with the best of the best race boats in the country. Modifications included extensive fairing of the hull, keel and rudder. The mast is carbon as is the boom and poles, plus the new transom hung rudder. There are 4 Harken race winches, new instruments and a lithium battery with charger. More recently her well known owner out of Sydney’s Middle Harbour had the hull professionally sprayed, added new instruments, and further tuned the rig. Standing rigging was replaced new in 2021. ► Two years ago, we discovered the Makai 37 in Croatia, designed by the Italian naval architects Eryd Yacht Design. The Z-shaped aft structure of the coachroof/bimini is unmistakably the signature of this young brand, which has already announced a second model, the Makai 42. In the meantime, Makai has added a touch of sportiness to its 37 in the GTS version, which is fitted with a central foil - a blade between the hulls connecting one to the other. ► Hull #5 includes this feature, and we got the chance to take it out for a test run in Aigio, Greece. It is powered by a pair of V8 Yanmar engines, each producing 370 HP, coupled to Q-SPD (Q-Marine Surface Piercing Drive) drive units with semi-submerged propellers. This configuration, with the same engine power, delivers a spectacular performance boost, as the top speed increases, according to our measurements, from 30 to 42.6 knots! The same applies to fuel consumption, which decreases by 30 to 50% at the same engine speed (starting at 3,000 rpm).
