At the 2022 Monaco Yacht Show, Lürssen exhibited M/Y Ahpo, the largest yacht of the show. The German shipyard also organized a press event to talk about its latest developments in Fuel Cell Technology which SUPERYACHT TV attended. Lürssen announced the building of their first yacht with fuel cell technology as well as the set-up of an Innovation Laboratory at their yard in Bremen. The Innovation Laboratory is a demonstration facility that is used to simulate and test the integration and operation of a Marine Hybrid Fuel Cell System on board a yacht powered by methanol. The fuel cell was integrated into the Innovation Lab in summer 2022 and has already successfully completed the first test runs. Lürssen has committed to a strategic partnership with Freudenberg, one of the leading experts for maritime fuel cells and a global technology group with around 50,000 employees in 60 countries. An essential milestone in maritime fuel cell technology is that Freudenberg has recently received type approval from RINA. The safety concept thus conforms to the IMO Interim Guideline and is approved for use on all types of ships. We learned about York River Yacht Haven while waiting to be dropped into the water at Zimmermans from a fellow cruiser. This marina is right around the bend from Zimmermans and is well-protected. It's right across the bridge from Yorktown which is full of history and pretty darn cool. I've always found that I have anxiety about coming into a new marina regarding maneuvering, how narrow the runways are, etc. So, I decided to make my tours of marinas public in case others may find them useful. We expect to be back here in June/July of 2023, waiting to be hauled out. The floating docks are in great shape. The restaurant onsite is pretty decent and the shop has lots of miscellaneous boating supplies. A short bike ride away is a West Marine. However, don't expect to find supplies for bigger boats there. I suspect, however, you can always have items shipped to the store if you know your schedule. Laundry facilities are OK. Going to check out the pool in June, but it looks like it's well-kept. The biggest frustration is with the pump out being inoperable. We were told at the time is was scheduled to be fixed. However, receiving an email from the marina recently about options for scheduling a pump out at slip, I see that it is still inoperable. It's exceedingly disappointing to find so few, a poorly maintained, pump out facilities. It was no different in San Francisco. “Recognise that your grief is rooted in something you love” - Our concern with the state of our planet and its climate triggers strong feelings in many. The care and love we have for our nature but also the fear, anger and sadness are part of our experiences when dealing with climate change and its global consequences. We used these strong emotions for inspiration and together with director Hanne Trap Friis created "Ripples - the sailing circus show". The performance, which took place on the wooden sailing ship “Swallow”, reached many people and communities in Denmark, Finland, Estonia and Norway during the 2-month sailing tour in the summer of 2022. Moments of exchange took place everywhere - on land and at sea. The Bay of Kotor in Montenegro is often called the "Fjord of the Mediterranean" and is world famous for it's beauty. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. We visited several places in the Bay and we filmed the island Lady of the Rock and the town of Perast which is beautiful and serene. During the Venetian rule over Montenegro, Peras as an important martime center and you still can see the beautiful baroque buildings, mostly built by wealthy sea captains in the 17th and 18th centuries. Separado, morando sozinho num pequeno barraco, com os filhos morando muito distante (dois no Canadá e a caçula em Paraty) já estava aceitando a vida sedentária. Fazia minhas cainhadas diárias e dançava eventualmente. O restante do tempo era ocupado com leitura, rede social e televisão. Em 2022 fui visitar seus filhos no Canadá e meu filho mais velho tinha comprado um pequeno veleiro para navegar no lago de Montreal. Então, num passeio nessa pequena embarcação, meu filho iniciou um diálogo mais ou menos assim: - Velho! Você já foi um grande aventureiro por que não faz mais uma aventura? - Que aventura, cara! – respondi. - Vir de Veleiro do Brasil até o Canadá. Você precisa sair de casa. Precisa de objetivos de vida. - Você está louco? Nunca naveguei e não tenho dinheiro para comprar um veleiro! – retruquei. - Você não tem uma Previdência Privada? - Sim. Tenho. Mas ela é para quando eu ficar velho. É para minha saúde – respondi. - Mas você já não está velho? (emitiu uma sonora gargalhada). Então você retira esse dinheiro e compra um veleiro. Comece a estudar, assistir vídeos e ler livros. Depois você vende o veleiro e repõe a grana. A sugestão do filho foi como um trauma mental para seu velho pai. A partir desse dia aprender sobre velas tornou-se minha obsessão. Tudo na na minha vida foi relacionado à navegação. Comecei a devorar livros e assistir todo tipo de vídeo no YouTube. No primeiro semestre de 2023 tirei a habilitação da Marinha para navegar em lagos (pré-requisito para as demais). No segundo semestre consegui a carteira de Mestre Amador e, finalmente, em abril de 2024, conseguiu a mais temida e difícil prova aplicada pela Marinha do Brasil: Capitão Amador. O material de estudo para essa prova foi enorme. Vários livros, apostilas, curso grátis no YouTube e sites pagos. Havia dias que o velho pensava que seria impossível passar na prova. Coisas estudadas era rapidamente esquecida pela memória sexagenária. A grana para compra do Veleiro estava resguardada. Era só esperar o momento oportuno. Entretanto, restava-me, equacionar os custos da viagem com sua pequena aposentadoria. A conclusão foi que a grana seria insuficiente, principalmente quando as despesas fossem em outra moeda. Para piorar, descobriu que chegando ao Canadá, seria muito difícil voltar no mesmo caminho, tendo em vista que existe uma corrente marítima contrária. O caminho de volta mais fácil teria que ser pela Europa e África. Ou seja, gastar em euros. O visto para entrada em cada ilha ou país corresponderá a um quarto da minha renda, sem contar comida, óleo diesel e manutenção no veleiro tudo em dólar ou Euro. Apesar dos estudos orçamentários indicar a inviabilidade do projeto, no dia 14/10/24 mudei para um veleiro adquirido na cidade de Salvador. O planejamento da viagem estima dois anos de vida ao mar, cujo planejamento pode ser verificado nos dois primeiros vídeos do canal “Veio Doido no Mar” no YouTube. Pretendo navegar pela costa brasileira, passar pelas Ilhas do Caribe, passar pelo Canadá, Europa e África. Em torno de 18 meses viajando.
