We depart Auckland and head north up the east coast of New Zealand until we clear North Cape, then sail 390nm NW to Norfolk Island, where (weather permitting) we will anchor and go ashore, clear Australian Customs and take a tour of the island and take in the rich history dating back to the early convict inhabitants. Then we will set sail for Lord Howe Island via a sail past of the unique Balls Pyramid, stretching almost 500m out of the ocean. We’ll stop at Lord Howe Island where we will tie up on a mooring in the lagoon for 2-3 nights on the western side and take the opportunity to swim, cycle, hike, relax and enjoy everything this stunning island has to offer.

I was anchoring off Asahan in southwestern Lombok near Gili Gede and unfortunately had my anchor and chain wrapped in a few liner underwater. I therefore had to freedive down to release the anchor.

A Expedição ANI pelo Brasil irá comemorar os 20 anos de trabalho da ONG itajaiense, que já ensinou mais de 16 mil alunos da rede pública a remar e velejar com o projeto “Navegando Pela Cidadania”. Em cada parada, os velejadores farão palestras abordando a história da ONG, a cultura náutica itajaiense, o desenvolvimento sustentável e a economia azul para o público local. “Queremos que esse projeto leve o nome da ANI e de Itajaí para outros municípios brasileiros que também desenvolvem o mundo náutico. A associação tem 20 anos de história e é um exemplo de práticas educativas e sustentáveis não só para a cidade, mas para o país inteiro.”, afirmou o ex-presidente da Associação Náutica e coordenador da Expedição ANI pelo Brasil, Claudio Copello. Durante as travessias, a equipe irá participar de duas competições importantes do calendário da vela oceânica brasileira. A primeira, Regata Aratu-Maragojipe, e a segunda, Regata Refeno (Recife-Fernando de Noronha). Além disso, o projeto prevê vagas para travessias divididas entre os 15 pontos de paradas. As pessoas interessadas poderão ter a experiência de navegação e imersão a bordo. Sienna was sad to miss traditional Halloween trick or treating but we found an even better way.... Reverse trick or treating! With Halloween bags filled with goodies we visit the other boats at Middle Percy and establish a new Halloween tradition.

In this episode we motor overnight from Sines to the city of Lagos, where we do some boat preparations and provisioning while we hang out with the Kaimana crew. We then set sail for the passage to Madeira. While running the engine to charge batteries we discover smoky steam coming from the engine room! NOT GOOD! To preserve batteries we commence hand steering and leaning more on the Hydrovane wind steering mechanism. And finally we arrive safely in Porto Santo, Madeira! Thanks for following!
