Windlass series...This is Part 2 of 3 of the WIndlass removal, repair, and install. In this episode we go through the process of the rebuilding the deck where the old windlass was. This process took several days as we had resin and epoxy that had to dry between layers. We also had to have a machine shop fabricate us a stainless steel plate to mount to the top of the deck. Slowly it is all coming back together but we had no idea how big this project had become. At least our existing deck had no rot or delamination anywhere. Sou um aposentado que no dia 18/09/2024 completou 69 anos de idade e resido na cidade de Morrinhos, no Sul do Estado de Goiás. Separado, morando sozinho num pequeno barraco, com os filhos morando muito distante (dois no Canadá e a caçula em Paraty) já estava aceitando a vida sedentária. Fazia minhas cainhadas diárias e dançava eventualmente. O restante do tempo era ocupado com leitura, rede social e televisão. Em 2022 fui visitar seus filhos no Canadá e meu filho mais velho tinha comprado um pequeno veleiro para navegar no lago de Montreal. Então, num passeio nessa pequena embarcação, meu filho iniciou um diálogo mais ou menos assim: - Velho! Você já foi um grande aventureiro por que não faz mais uma aventura? - Que aventura, cara! – respondi. - Vir de Veleiro do Brasil até o Canadá. Você precisa sair de casa. Precisa de objetivos de vida. - Você está louco? Nunca naveguei e não tenho dinheiro para comprar um veleiro! – retruquei. - Você não tem uma Previdência Privada? - Sim. Tenho. Mas ela é para quando eu ficar velho. É para minha saúde – respondi. - Mas você já não está velho? (emitiu uma sonora gargalhada). Então você retira esse dinheiro e compra um veleiro. Comece a estudar, assistir vídeos e ler livros. Depois você vende o veleiro e repõe a grana. A sugestão do filho foi como um trauma mental para seu velho pai. A partir desse dia aprender sobre velas tornou-se minha obsessão. Tudo na na minha vida foi relacionado à navegação. Comecei a devorar livros e assistir todo tipo de vídeo no YouTube. No primeiro semestre de 2023 tirei a habilitação da Marinha para navegar em lagos (pré-requisito para as demais). No segundo semestre consegui a carteira de Mestre Amador e, finalmente, em abril de 2024, conseguiu a mais temida e difícil prova aplicada pela Marinha do Brasil: Capitão Amador. O material de estudo para essa prova foi enorme. Vários livros, apostilas, curso grátis no YouTube e sites pagos. Havia dias que o velho pensava que seria impossível passar na prova. Coisas estudadas era rapidamente esquecida pela memória sexagenária. A grana para compra do Veleiro estava resguardada. Era só esperar o momento oportuno. Entretanto, restavam, ainda duas questões muito importantes: arrumar uma companheira de viagem e equacionar os custos da viagem com sua pequena aposentadoria. A conclusão foi que a grana seria insuficiente, principalmente quando as despesas fossem em outra moeda. Para piorar, descobriu que chegando ao Canadá, seria muito difícil voltar no mesmo caminho, tendo em vista que existe uma corrente marítima contrária. O caminho de volta mais fácil teria que ser pela Europa e África. Ou seja, gastar em euros. O visto para entrada em cada ilha ou país corresponderá a um quarto da minha renda, sem contar comida, óleo diesel e manutenção no veleiro tudo em dólar ou Euro. Apesar dos estudos orçamentários indicar a inviabilidade do projeto, no dia 14/10/24 mudei para um veleiro adquirido na cidade de Salvador. O planejamento da viagem estima dois anos de vida ao mar, cujo planejamento pode ser verificado nos dois primeiros vídeos do canal “Veio Doido no Mar” no YouTube. Pretendo navegar pela costa brasileira, passar pelas Ilhas do Caribe, passar pelo Canadá, Europa e África. Em torno de 18 meses viajando. Quanto à namorada, depois de convidar mais de 50 mulheres para o acompanhar na jornada, uma mulher da minha cidade aceitou. Mas, infelizmente, faltando 3 semanas embarcar, ela desistiu.

The 2026 RORC Transatlantic Race delivered an extraordinary Atlantic crossing from Lanzarote to Antigua, showcasing innovation, endurance and seamanship at the highest level of offshore racing. Across nearly 3,000 nautical miles, the international fleet produced record-breaking performances, fiercely contested class battles and deeply human stories of teamwork and resilience. Overall Victory: Palanad 4 The Mach 50 Palanad 4 (FRA), owned by Olivier Magre and skippered by his son Antoine Magre, claimed overall victory on IRC corrected time. In only its second offshore race, the scow-bow Mach 50 concept proved its credentials across a full ocean crossing — a landmark father-and-son achievement that combined innovation, preparation and disciplined execution. Multihull Line Honours: Argo In a breathtaking MOD70 duel, Argo (USA) claimed Multihull Line Honours and set a new race record for the Lanzarote–Antigua route. Locked in a relentless match race with Zoulou (FRA), Argo sustained speeds well over 30 knots across the Atlantic, underlining the extreme performance of modern ocean-racing multihulls. Monohull Line Honours: Raven The 34-metre Baltic 111 Raven, skippered by Damien Durchon, delivered one of the defining performances of the race. Raven took Monohull Line Honours, won the IMA Transatlantic Trophy, and set a new monohull race record — becoming the first foil-assisted monohull of her size to complete a transatlantic race. Her performance marked a new chapter in offshore monohull design. IRC Podium & Class Winners • Ino Noir (GBR), James Neville’s Carkeek 45, delivered a gritty and consistent race to finish second overall on IRC. • Jackknife (GBR), the J/125 sailed by Sam Hall with his father Andrew, secured third overall on IRC and victory in IRC Two, one of the standout Corinthian performances of the race. • In the Double-Handed division, Kornog 2 (FRA) claimed victory on corrected time, while Adrien was first double-handed yacht to finish. Superyacht & Special Trophies • Linnea Aurora, the 128ft Hoek design skippered by Phil Martinson, emerged as best-placed superyacht on IRC, earning the Superyacht Trophy. • Maxitude, sailed by Xavier Bellouard, completed a milestone Atlantic crossing and won the Yacht Club de France Trophy. A Race Marked by Respect The 2026 edition was also marked by tragedy following the loss of a crew member aboard Walross 4. The race stands dedicated to the Walross 4 crew, with the entire fleet, organisers and host venues united in respect, solidarity and support — a powerful reminder of the risks inherent in ocean racing and the values that bind the offshore community. As the final boats arrived safely in Antigua, the 2026 RORC Transatlantic Race will be remembered as a defining edition: one that pushed the boundaries of performance while reinforcing the importance of seamanship, preparation and respect for the ocean.
