Gineico Marine are at Fort Lauderdale Boat Show 2023 interviewing Chris from Solace Boats, on a Solace 41CS, 41ft long, 12ft w - fitted with a Quick x 10 Gyro EXCERPT: ".. access to the quick gyro - the quick gyro has worked and is great for this application, in fact for all the sizes that Solace makes - given the fact that it's air cooled instead of water cooled, it doesn't require a generator to spool it up ... and it spools up much quicker than some of the other gyro manufacturers in the industry. .....everything's nice and neat in this compartment - you have access to all your batteries, breakers, battery management, the Quick gyro and systems." INTERVIEW: It's Mark here from Gineico Marine in Australia for the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show. I'm here with Chris from Solace Boats and he's going to do us a walk around of the 41 CS - and he'll show you through. He's got a Quick X10 Gyro fitted to this particular boat - and we'll go through the boat - and we'll go back to the Gyro at the end. Chris: Absolutely, thanks for stopping in! You're on the 41 CS Solace Boat. At 41 ft long, it's 12.3 ft wide. The boat weighs at 22,000 lb dry, it carries just over 500 gallons of fuel with an additional 200 gallon option. Starting at the back on both port and starboard side you have your aquarium style live wells. They're 50 gallons per side, they are pressurized live wells unlike some of our competition. We've got here in the center a Fish Box. This particular Fish Box has a freezer plate in it. It's also optional to get the ice chipper as well - that would fit in this same compartment. Got the fold down back seat here - these seat cushions on this boat are all removable and it's all magnets instead of snaps. All the vinyl that we use is silicone versus a marine grade vinyl which really reduces sun degradation over the years. This is a removable back rest with rod holders – the armrest, you got rod holders across the entire stern of the boat. This particular boat has 600 horse mercs. Moving forward you've got Fish Box both port and starboard side. You've got a mezzanine seat here with the seat cushions that come up on magnets just like the back of the boat. Here you've got a Prep Station..... You’ve got three seats across at the helm - the floor is really cool for those who are vertically challenged! The floor comes up nearly 6 in, mechanically. You’ve got the 22 inch Garmin standard in the boat, stereo system with no shortage of speakers it's all JL Audio. You’ve got over 2,000 Watts. Air condition in the Cockpit, and this windshield is really cool – it’s electric, it's not hydraulic these stainless steel Rams are very very expensive that we use on this boat. The Rams are actually designed to be used submerged underwater so the life of these is forever. You got lockable Rod storage port and starboard side. Storage doors here, tackle organizers storage here. You've got frigid rigid removable coolers they can all be painted whatever color you choose to paint your boat. Back rest here; you've got storage here for fenders, you've got your speakers which are all tooled into the bow of the boat. Anchor storage, windless, you got the space here for a fender line, spot to hang lines - whatever works best! Mate - serious rod holder cup holders which also double as the racks for the bow shade to fit in the for the carbon poles - they'll slide in here. Big bow Lounge which is what gives so much Headroom in the cabin. Something else that is really cool in the Solace is when you walk around on the gun of the boat you have these magnetic spots and we provide these Koozies so when you have a fish on you can set your drink down and keep walking. The cabin of the boat - you've got over 5 headroom. You've got a shower and a bathroom here - this is fully air conditioned. Those back rest cushions make this a bed. You have storage underneath these cushions which can also double as Rod storage. So again port and starboard side mated fish boxes and then access to the quick gyro which the quick gyro has work great for this application, in fact for all the sizes that Solace makes - given the fact that it's air cooled instead of water cooled, it doesn't require a generator to spool it up although this boat has one it spools up on 12vt and it spools up much quicker than some of the other gyro manufacturers in the industry. But you can see everything's nice and neat in this compartment - you have access to all your batteries, breakers, battery management and systems. ....... Everything in the boat's easy to get to, easy to service well laid out – yes absolutely It is a very amazing boat! We needed to find a way to store our extra sails on our 1987 Morgan Classic without losing our Vberth or our Forward head. Someone suggested in a group we are in a shelf built in the Vberth. So off we went to figure out how we wanted to do this. It turned out fantastic so watch as we build, stain and install this shelf unit. Then see how much storage it added for us. These boats dont have under the bed, floors or on deck storage so it can be an issue for stuff. #storage #storagesoutions #Sailboat Thanks for watching! SAILING ILLUSTRATED #691 (Tue 5 Mar 2024) — Nick Craig (GBR) has done it again, winning the 2024 Tan Lines OK Dinghy World Championship in Brisbane (AUS), his sixth OK Worlds title. It was also the biggest OK Dinghy event ever held in Australia with 112 boats from seven countries. @sailingmanatee
SAILING ILLUSTRATED #723 (Friday 12 July 2024) — The "Black Foils" (NZL) are on top of the Sail GP leaderboard going into this weekend's Grand Final in San Francisco. But will Tom Slingsby (AUS/USA) and his band of Aussies prevail, again, in the predicted breezy conditions on SF Bay, making it a four-peat for Season 4? Could this be a preview of the AC37 Finals — Slingsby v. Burling — in Barcelona? Hey there, fellow adventurers! If you're into the thrill of living off the grid, sailing into the unknown, or just figuring out how to make ends meet while chasing dreams, this one's for you. Picture this: it's Halloween morning, the air's crisp, and you're not hitting up a haunted house or a big party. Instead, you're on a boat, rocking gently with the waves, deciding between staying cozy or splurging. That's exactly where we found ourselves—two broke sailors trying to keep the magic alive without breaking the bank. In our latest video, we kick off the spooky season right from the deck. "Okay, guys," I say, camera in hand, capturing the real-deal moment. My partner's in the galley, whipping up breakfast, and we're debating our day. Do we head out and drop some cash on fun, or hunker down because, well, we're pretty tapped out? It's a classic dilemma for anyone living the boat life. We've been out here for a while now, embracing that off-grid freedom, but it comes with its challenges—like sticking to a budget after a couple of big trips. Let's back up a bit. Boat life isn't all sunsets and smooth sails. We've done two major adventures in the last two months—exploring hidden coves, anchoring in spots most folks only dream about. It sounds glamorous, right? But those trips add up fast: fuel, provisions, maybe a quick repair or two. Now, here we are on Halloween, staring at our freezer full of meat and wondering how to stretch it. "We got lots of meat in that freezer," I mention in the video, and it's true. No fancy costumes or candy hauls for us; we're thinking practical, like a slow-cooker pork roast. It's hearty, it's cheap, and it keeps the spirits high—pun intended. One of the best parts of this lifestyle is getting creative with what you've got. That freezer? I spent ages fixing it up so it actually stays cold now. No more spoiled food disasters mid-voyage. It's those little wins that make off-grid living doable. We're not out here to live large; we're here to live free. Budgeting is key—tracking every dollar so we can keep exploring without ending up stranded. If you're new to this world, start simple: list your must-haves (food, safety gear) and cut the extras. Apps for expense tracking or just a notebook work wonders. Halloween adds a fun twist to our routine. While everyone's back on land dressing up as ghosts and goblins, we're out on the water, maybe carving a pumpkin if we snagged one cheap, or telling ghost stories under the stars. Safety's always first, though—stay safe out there, y'all, as we say in the video. No risky nighttime sails or ignoring weather just for holiday cheer. It's about balancing the fun with the reality of our floating home. Speaking of videos, we've got more coming your way. The next one's dropping Sunday, diving into B-A-Y-A-H-I-B-E. Yeah, I butcher the name every time—it's one of those spots that's hard to pronounce but even harder to forget. Think pristine bays, crystal waters, and that pure escape feeling. If you've ever messed up a word on camera, you know the struggle. But hey, it keeps things real and relatable. Living as broke sailors teaches you resilience. We're not millionaires with a yacht club membership; we're everyday folks proving you don't need deep pockets for adventure. Off-grid means solar panels for power, rainwater collection, and yes, that trusty freezer. It's sustainable, it's exciting, and it's ours. If you're feeling stuck in the nine-to-five grind, consider dipping your toes in—maybe a weekend sail or reading up on van life parallels. The travel bug bites hard once you start. Of course, it's not all smooth. Being broke means tough choices, like skipping that onshore Halloween bash. But there's joy in the simple: sharing a home-cooked meal, watching the sunrise from the cockpit, and knowing tomorrow's another chance to explore. Our boat's our world, and we're making it work, one budget-friendly day at a time. As we wrap up the video, it's all well-wishes: have a great Halloween, stay safe, and keep watching. If this resonates, maybe it's time for you to rethink your own adventures. Who says spooky season can't include a little wanderlust? Drop a comment if you've got budget tips for travelers—we're all in this together.
Hi everyone, This video is one of my favorites as it chronicles our amazing sail from the Marquesas to the Tuamotus a 400 nautical mile dash to the most coral infested waters we have ever seen. They actually delete the chart information within the atolls so you have to use your eyes and some satellite pics to stay off the "Bommies" (what they call coral heads) Come along as we enter our first "Atoll Pass" , meet some friends above and below the water along with some serious beachcombing and a wardrobe malfunction. I hope you see the absolute joy we experienced in this most famous set of islands in the South Pacific!
Sailing vessel Tapatya This is the story of SV Tapatya, a self-built, Jay Benford designed, 31.8ft, junk schooner-rigged cruising sailboat. The videos are a week-by-week record of our adventures as I live aboard, sail and strive to find out just what such a self-built, low-budget vessel is capable of. These videos take a lot of time and effort to make, in what is already a time-intensive project. Your support in watching, subscribing and sharing these videos is very much appreciated. You make a real difference!! A day of tree felling in the remote wilderness of Southeast Alaska. We anchored the sailboat near a friend’s developing cabin site on Wrangell Island to help clear dangerous trees that were putting his cabin at risk with the prevailing winds. Chainsaws, stale gas, rusty chains, excavators, blown-down timber, and plenty of chaos. Pretty standard Alaska spring startup energy. 🌲⚓️ Living aboard our steel schooner means every stop turns into an adventure, and this one involved dropping trees right along the coastline while waking equipment back up after winter. Some cuts went smooth… some definitely didn’t. Welcome to real life in coastal Alaska.

It’s a question that tends to surface whenever dramatic footage appears online, fires, groundings, collisions, yachts making headlines for all the wrong reasons. But what does that really tell us about the industry as a whole? In this episode, we step back from the noise and look at the bigger picture behind yacht safety. Not boating, but yachting. The world of professionally run vessels, trained crew, structured procedures, and serious ownership standards. We look at how incidents are reported and why visibility often distorts perception. We also compare large yacht operations with other transport industries and consider what the available data actually suggests about risk at this level. Along the way, we touch on what really matters onboard: crew experience, maintenance, decision-making, and the relationship between owner and captain. If you are thinking about yacht ownership, or simply follow the industry closely, this is a useful lens through which to view the conversation.
