Here's some of the tips and tricks we learned when we had to prepare for a hurricane. We are by no means experts, this was the first time we had to do this. Prepare for the power and water to be shut off: Flashlights 5 gal Water Jugs Fill your bathtub with water (to flush the toilet/rinse) Generator Gasoline Propane cook top Propane Food for up to 2 weeks Prepare the Boat Add extra dock lines TIE DOWN EVERYTHING that can blow away Tie up the sails (or take them down) Take down Bimini Fold down the dodger (if possible) Be prepared for you and your loved ones to get to higher ground. We had our lifevests, as well as the dogs ready (we forgot to mention that in the video). My quest for deeper water came to an end, and I sailed from Hota back to Yuminoshima Marina in Tokyo Bay, leaving in the wee hours of the day under the still of darkness. Thanksgiving began early this year as we needed to catch the wind! We left Bohicket Marina on Monday around 2 PM and caught a nice NW wind right out of the channel. After teaching our guests how to raise the main sail and fly the genoa, we decided to put up the parasailor instead! Conditions were supposed to be perfect for this sail. So, we taught our guests how to furl the genoa and lower the main sail. Then we spent an hour getting the parasailor rigged and hoisted and set. Our NW wind was due to clock around to N, then to NE, then to E, from 18-22 knots. And that it did! We were able to average 8.5 knots with the parasailor, with high speed around 10. We sailed all night long with just a few adjustments. Aside from the block that got a little bent from pressure in the wrong spots, the parasailor performed beautifully. We arrived at St. Simons Inlet around daybreak and proceeded in. On the way in, we went right by the MV Golden Ray, a shipwreck from Sept 2019, where a car carrier freighter had misadjusted his ballast and ended up on his side. They are still dismantling it and we were able to get a good view from the water. During year of (2009-2011) I gathered different parts of lead (mostly wheel weights) and friends giving lead parts. Come sail away with us! We take you through the process on our sailing yacht Northern Exposure! ***Sailing employs the wind acting on sails. From prehistory until the second half of the 19th century, sailing ships were the primary means of maritime trade and transportation; exploration across the seas and oceans was reliant on sail for anything other than the shortest distances. Naval power in this period used sail to varying degrees depending on the current technology, culminating in the gun-armed sailing warships of the Age of Sail. Sail was slowly replaced by steam as the method of propulsion for ships over the latter part of the 19th century – seeing a gradual improvement in the technology of steam through a number of stepwise developments. Steam allowed scheduled services that ran at higher average speeds than sailing vessels. Large improvements in fuel economy allowed steam to progressively outcompete sail in, ultimately, all commercial situations, giving ship-owning investors a better return on capital. In the 21st century, most sailing represents a form of recreation or sport. Recreational sailing or yachting can be divided into racing and cruising. Cruising can include extended offshore and ocean-crossing trips, coastal sailing within sight of land, and daysailing. Sailing relies on the physics of sails as they derive power from the wind, generating both lift and drag. On a given course, the sails are set to an angle that optimizes the development of wind power, as determined by the apparent wind, which is the wind as sensed from a moving vessel. The forces transmitted via the sails are resisted by forces from the hull, keel, and rudder of a sailing craft, by forces from skate runners of an iceboat, or by forces from wheels of a land sailing craft which are steering the course. This combination of forces means that it is possible to sail an upwind course as well as downwind. The course with respect to the true wind direction (as would be indicated by a stationary flag) is called a point of sail. Conventional sailing craft cannot derive wind power on a course with a point of sail that is too close into the wind.
