Before the rest of the volunteers arrive, we have to get the huge timbers of the Stern Assembly bedded and fastened into the stern of Tally Ho. First we drill the holes for the bolts, using a 6’ long drill bit in a custom-made jig. Then we lift all the pieces with jacks and ropes, and fill the gaps with Tar and Felt. When they are back in place, the bronze bolts are driven through and tightened up, and lo and behold – the Stern Assembly is ready to accept new Frames, just in the nick of time! The last weeks have been especially hectic, so this video is a little shorter than usual, and hasn’t covered all the amazing work that Arnaud, Finn, Thom, Kirt and Tim have been doing to prepare for our intensive Frame-raising period, which is just beginning! DIY FACE MASKS - 2 (6" x 9") rectangles fabric - 4 ties or strings - Sewing machine or needle & thread - Scissors - Pins or clips 1. Put 1 rectangle fabric, right-side up on a flat surface. 2. Put 1 tie in each corner with them going towards the middle of the rectangle (not off the sides); pin or clip in place. 3. Put the remaining rectangle of fabric, right-side down, on top and clip in place. 4. Sew around the rectangle leaving a gap so you can turn the mask right-side out. We got new sails! It's not easy ordering sails over email but Bob from Neil Pryde Sails was great to deal with. We put them to the test and the​ start to our sail to Niue (590nm​ west across the Pacific Ocean​) was a rough one. Poor Julian was as sea sick as they come and couldn’t go down below for most of the trip (I’m telling you, coffee is the devil when the seas are high!). We are hoping to get to the inside of a tiny reef in the middle of the ocean, a few hundred miles before Niue if the weather turns around. I guess we’ll see. It's impossible to prepare ourselves for all the scenarios we've had, could have and will inevitably encounter. But this passage was a real doozey, and may have knocked our huge hole in the boat moment out of first place for our scariest day at sea. Because navigating a sea full of debris with dying wind, no propulsion, sizzling batteries, and toxic fumes might take the cake. Spoiler alert, we survived. All things considered, we were sooo incredibly fortunate it all happened on a calm morning, in a protected bay, during normal business hours, and just hours from our planned port of call. Had it been the middle of the night with rough seas and mid-ocean, this all could have been much, much worse. The overcharging event should not have happened and it took us all by surprise. But, the team at HH Catamarans was on top of it the moment we called them. Thank you Paul, Ricardo, Chris, Jerry and the rest of the team for your swift and unwavering support at such a critical time. In 1940 she was chartered by author John Steinbeck and marine biologist Ed Ricketts for a marine specimen-collecting expedition in the Gulf of California. Steinbeck’s book about their journey, The Log from the Sea of Cortez, is considered one of his most important works. After a hard life of fishing, the Western Flyer sunk and was left for dead… until a marine geologist named John Gregg stepped up and purchased the boat. The Western Flyer arrived in Port Townsend in 2015 and since then has been painstakingly rebuilt and restored by the Port Townsend Shipwrights Coop.
