We take a look at the rest of Tally Ho’s history, and then I travel to Bristol to meet John R-B, who builds replica Bristol Channel Pilot Cutters in the Underfall Yard, and who first took me on as an apprentice when I first started doing wooden boat work. He tells us a little about the history of Pilot Cutters, and talks about why yacht designers return again and again to their classic lines. Finally, I travel back to the US and take a long road-trip from Boston down to south Georgia, to visit Cross Sawmill, where a huge amount of Southern Live Oak (Quercus Virginiana) is being milled for me, to be used as framing stock on Tally Ho back in Washington State. The lagoon bulkhead issue is no longer in question as to whether it is a design flaw or not. 63 lagoon 450's have reported damaged bulkheads, anywhere from bending, to completely snapped. Hell Delos Tribe! WE'RE BACK!!!! 835 hours of HARD LABOR, that’s how! This is Boat Work in Exotic Places in its truest fashion! After 4 months of visiting family and exploring Iceland and the Svalbard we finally return home, back to Delos in Grenada. We get to work straight away by creating a Boat Work To Do list with all the tasks we need to get her ship-shape and back in the water where she belongs. Our major tasks involve repainting the bottom, fixing our bow thruster, and grinding the keel back to bear metal and building back all the layers. WE FINALLY BUY A SAILBOAT. It feels like we’ve been searching for a boat forever! In this episode we finally buy a boat, a beautiful Tartan 37. Before we find the Tartan, we look at two other options in the Milwaukee area: a Pearson 38 and a Southerly 35. The Pearson had been left on the hard for about five years, and the neglect shows. While the swing keel is a cool concept on the Southerly, this boat came with too much extra stuff (resulting in a higher price tag) that we didn’t need. We just know this Tartan is our boat. But how? They say you get a feeling, and even though we thought we had felt it before, this time is different. It helps that the buying experience unfolds without any drama (unlike our previous efforts to buy: i.e. a seller deciding he didn’t want to sell, another seller unable to finish work prior to closing). Lastly, the sellers of the Tartan have clearly doted on their boat — its condition is immaculate. The day of the survey starts with sunny skies and light winds. Just as the sellers are preparing the boat for the sea trial, a cold front moves in. The skies greys over and the winds start gusting. Both sails are raised, but only the 150% genoa is reefed slightly. During a tack, a jib sheet gets away, and the other jib sheet gets caught on a winch. Both Kirk and I are glad we can experience how the boat handles in stronger winds. And then, it’s closing day! We sail into the Indian port of Port Blair and prepare to check in. The process is the craziest we've ever seen with heaps of Indian Officials visiting Delos from Customs, Immigration, and the Indian Navy. Customs decided to lock up our Iridium Phone but eventually we get our clearance finished. We go on a beer fueled exploration day to fill our bellies with local food and the girls shop for their new sorrees then give us a fashion show.
