Still have covid so can't sail again this week. It's very frustrating to be honest. So, it's more boat projects and this week it's completing the sea hopper wheels so I can hopefully pull her in and out of rivers a bit better. 00:00 Fixing the wheels 03:29 Cutting the axle 03:45 sticking the foam pads 07:44 Test run!
What an experience, deep culture, music, togetherness, and fun! Our first attempt at installing ducting in the mizzen mast for the antenna cables has failed :-( Time to try a different approach. What do you think? Both our AIS and WiFi Boost Antennas come from Digital Yacht and we bought ready-made cables from them too. We need the AIS antenna cable to run from the top of the mizzen and the WiFi Boost antenna cable from the middle. To avoid them flapping around in the mast I had riveted a plastic duct to the inside front edge of the mast. Here we see how that failed and what we are trying next. If you would like to encourage us then we have memberships or donations on Ko-Fi! at https://ko-fi.com/sustainablesailing/ Note that we receive 100% of all memberships and donations. Or visit our shop at https://sustainablesailing.teemill.com/ for great hoodies, t-shirts and bags. We are changing all the standing rigging on our 1977 Rival 38 to Dyneema synthetic rigging. That includes all shrouds, stays and even the chainplates for both masts of our ketch rig. We are refitting a 1977 Rival 38 for a Sustainable Sailing retirement in a few years. Three years ago, when we bought Vida she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings (much of it not working). We have removed all the gas, diesel and paraffin equipment, and are installing all-electric (motor, cooking etc). Lots more detail on our blog at https://sustainablesailing.net/ #AIS #Antenna #WiFi Boost
IN THIS VIDEO While we patiently wait for our boat to get built, we're taking the opportunity to learn as much as possible about maintaining the boat ourselves. Join us we take on a 'stinky job' and we replace not only our 36 year old head, but also also all the plumbing that goes with it. CURRENT LOCATION: https://forecast.predictwind.com/tracking/display/SV-GTFO/ ABOUT FUTURE OUR PERFORMANCE CATAMARAN: We fell in love with the Balance 482 - it's a perfect size for a cruising couple to handle and is a great "balance" of performance and comfort. One of our favorite features is the excellent ventilation since we mostly live as "hookers" (aka at anchor) where the boat automatically turns into the wind so we stay cool and we don't need to battle mold. We also have starlink for easy off-grid life. Our 2400 watt solar panel array also means we rarely need to run an engine to charge our batteries. ABOUT US: We saved for a our future boat, Sold Everything that we owned, Shipped the rest in a container to Cape Town, South Africa, flew to Cape Town, South Africa airport, to explore South Africa including an amazing safari, touring around Cape Town, move onto a Balance 482 Catamaran, then sailed to St Helena, Ascension Island, Fernando de Naronha, Brazil, Martinique, Sint Maarten (Dutch and French), St. Croix, St. John, St. Thomas, Inagua, Crooked Island, Long Island, George Town, Staniel Cay, Eleuthera, Anegada, Bahamas, Cape Canaveral, St. Augustine Florida, USA, Matthews Virigina, Zimmerman's marine for a haul out, and more! Both Dennis and Ann grew up military brats with Army fathers. Dennis (the Colonel) served 30 years in the US Army and his retirement pension helped us retire in our 50s. Ann (the ship's Captain) wrote Test Automation in Python and Java. Dennis and Ann met on Match.com where Ann had in her profile "Do you want to sail the world with me?" Ann easily brought Dennis into sailing and he loved the GTFOplan of retiring early and sailing the world. After many years of saving, living on one income but earning two incomes, and cutting back on everything possible, they saved enough to buy a Balance 482. Follow them as they get real about boat life and all the hassles of buying a new boat because we all know N.E.W. means Not Everything Works. Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen was the first to reach the South Pole and the North Pole, but his greatest achievement may have been leading the first successful crossing of the Northwest Passage in 1906. Terje Andre Pedersen grew up inspired by Amundsen's great stories of exploration. He has followed his own dreams, and is soon to set sail towards the Northwest Passage in Amundsen's wake with a ship made of wood and a crew made of iron. Alaska Summer Vacation Pt 2...Halibut Cove, Halibut Fishing off the Homer Spit.. So much Halibut 🎣 !
Part 2 of our Alaskan Summer Vacation has us still on the Kenai Peninsula. We travel from the fish camp to the Homer Spit for a day charter to Halibut Cove. This place is gorgeous. Like a fairytale . Next we charter a fishing boat to go Halibut fishing off the Spit. We were up early and the seas were calm. We caught so much fish. We were able to have the fish processed and shipped home to California.
Komodo Dragons are giant lizards that have evolved into being top predators and lethal killers. They are amazing in several respects firstly due to their power and lethality. Secondly due to their killing methods either by swallowing alive or by infecting their victims with their poisonous saliva. They are also outstanding due to the fact that such a powerful and lethal animal has evolved in two tiny islands in Indonesia a phenomena not seen in other predator species. And the Komodo Dragon does not feed itself of small animals as it eats wild pigs, deer and goats which it swallows whole and alive while larger animals such as wild buffalo it bites, infects, waits them out while they die and then eats them. Watching them in the wild in their natural environment of Komodo and Rinca Islands is a true privilege and all owed to the magnificent National Park Services and Staff of Indonesia that has managed to keep their habitat perfectly preserved and protected into the future.
Max Groy, Senior coach for the German Sailing team, sat down with us for an interview during the 2023 European Championships, to discuss the popularity of the 49er class in Germany. Germany has yet to qualify for the Paris Olympics in the 49er class, and with with a big team, their chances get bigger and bigger. As an experienced coach, Max explains how all sailors and coaches are based in Kiel, which creates a good team with great communication all around.

Posting on: https://www.facebook.com/sailinghangtime https://www.instagram.com/sailinghangtime/ -------------------------------------------- About us: We are a family of four who have been living on our boat for the past 4+ years with our two boys and our newest addition, a Havanese pup named Ruby. We worked hard in our 20's and 30's and built a company that has an amazing team managing it and allows us to work remotely and take time to enjoy this time with our fmaily. We love adventure, sports and an active lifestyle but also take pleasure in a great meal or a sunset gin and tonic. Boat life is challanging and busy but we have been learning as we go and have a great appreciation for the sailing community and the willingness of others to teach and share skills. Bulkhead reinforcement isn’t about adding more fibreglass—it’s about understanding how loads actually move through a boat. In this video, we reinforce a small but critical section of bulkhead on Paikea, our Lock Crowther Catana 42s, and use it to explain: Why bulkheads act as structural beams How span, depth, and stiffness dictate laminate design When uni-directional fibre is required (and when it isn’t) The difference between edge capping and true structural reinforcement Why we chose polyester and E-glass instead of carbon and epoxy Real-world trade-offs between performance, cost, and practicality. This is not a cosmetic refit. It’s structural work driven by basic beam theory and offshore reality. If you’re refitting a multihull—or assessing one—this is the kind of detail that matters. Solo sailing deep into the southern Bahamas 🇧🇸 In this episode of Sailing Mirage, I sail alone from Little Inagua Island to Great Inagua Island, arriving in Matthew Town - the most remote settlement in the entire Bahamas island chain. It was a beautiful, steady downwind passage with deep blue water, sunshine, and great spirits - just how I like it. 🌊☀️ What I didn’t expect was the arrival… In Matthew Town, every yacht arrival is an event. Locals quickly gathered around, full of curiosity and warmth, asking questions about sailing, my boat, my passages, and - most of all - how solo sailing is even possible. :) As a bonus, I hired a local guide to explore this unique island: 🧂 Morton’s Salt - one of the largest salt production facilities in the world 🦩 Flamingos feeding on saltwater pink shrimp 🗼 The historic lighthouse built by the British in 1870 🐚 And a rare local conch cookout, ending the day with an incredible fresh conch salad This is sailing at the edge of civilization - simple, human, welcoming, and unforgettable. If you enjoy real ocean passages, remote places, and the human side of sailing, you’re in the right place. ⚓ Fair winds, Vlad Sailing Mirage

🌴 Moorea, French Polynesia… Paradise or Problem? | Stingrays, Sharks & the Ethical Debate 🦈 For the last two years, this moment lived only in our imagination… And now, we’ve finally arrived in one of the most breathtaking places on Earth — Moorea. Towering green peaks. Electric blue lagoons. Coral gardens bursting with life. This island feels like stepping into a dream. But beneath the beauty… there’s a growing controversy. ⸻ 🐠 The Experience Everyone Talks About… Swimming in Moorea’s lagoon is nothing short of magical. Stingrays glide over your feet… soft, curious, almost playful. Blacktip reef sharks circle calmly nearby… powerful, yet peaceful. And unlike most places in the world… 👉 You’re encouraged to touch them 👉 You’re encouraged to feed them It’s close. It’s thrilling. It’s unforgettable. ⸻ ⚠️ But Here’s the Question… For years, we’ve followed one simple rule in the ocean: Look… but don’t touch. Don’t feed. Don’t interfere. So what happens when that rule gets blurred? These encounters in Moorea aren’t random… They’re created. Boats arrive. Food goes in. Wildlife gathers. And while it feels incredible… it raises a deeper question: 👉 Are we connecting with wildlife… or changing it? ⸻ 🌊 The Bigger Debate Around the world, feeding marine life has been linked to: • Changes in natural behaviour • Conditioning animals to humans • Increased risk — for both animals and people Yet here in Moorea… it feels calm, controlled, even safe. So where is the line? Is this: ✨ A rare, beautiful connection with nature OR ⚠️ A long-term problem we don’t fully understand? ⸻ ⛵ Our Journey Continues… This episode isn’t just about Moorea. It’s about the start of a new chapter for us — Sailing our Nautitech 40 through French Polynesia. From lagoon snorkelling and drift dives… To lush mountain hikes, cultural history, and life at anchor… And just as we begin to fall in love with this island… We leave. Next stop: A 220-mile upwind crossing to the Tuamotus. ⸻ 💬 We Want Your Opinion This is not a simple yes or no debate. So tell us honestly in the comments: 👉 Would you feed and touch the stingrays? 👉 Do you think this is harmless… or harmful? 👉 Where should the line be drawn? We genuinely want to hear your thoughts. ⸻ 👍 If you enjoyed this episode: ✔️ Like the video ✔️ Subscribe for more sailing adventures ✔️ Join us as we take on the open ocean Because life is better barefoot. 🌊 And we’ll see you out there. ⸻
