After months of work, trial and error, and a few unexpected setbacks, we finally finished building our own sail covers and stack packs for Arabella. What started as a winter project turned into a full deep dive into canvas work—designing, patterning, sewing, breaking the machine, waiting weeks for parts, and learning as we went. In this video, we walk through the entire process, the improvements we made over our old setup, and why doing it ourselves might have been one of the best upgrades we could make for the boat. From better drainage and durability to smarter line management and even integrated awnings, these new covers should completely change how Arabella looks and functions underway. In this episode of the Poulsbo Boat Project, I continue building the backbone of this classic 15’ sport fishing boat design. This week is all about dry fitting the centerline structure: stem, keelson, transom, transom knee, and cutwater. After refining the transom in the last episode and setting up the station molds on the strongback, it’s time to start bringing the backbone together. I trim and fit the transom knee, steam-bend the aft section of the keelson into place, and continue shaping and fitting the cutwater assembly before final planking begins. This project is a modern cedar strip reinterpretation of a classic 1950s Ronald Young - designed Poulsbo Boat, originally built as a traditional carvel-planked sport fishing boat in Poulsbo, Washington. Race victories and ladder climbing was in order for the Australian Sailing Team on day three of the 2009 Delta Lloyd Regatta. In the 49er class Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen won two races and sit in third place while in the 470s Mathew Belcher and Malcolm Page won a race.
