The Royal Malta Racing Youth Team concluded their four-day participation at the Yachting Malta BSC International Regatta hosted by Birzebbugia Sailing Club Freeport in what was a regatta noted for challenging light wind conditions throughout the entire period.

On May 21, 2023, I will turn 80. I plan to do a celebratory cruise in my sailboat “Carlita” around the whole of the Pamlico Sound. A distance of 500 nautical miles. It has been just over 10 years since I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. I never expected to make it to 80, let alone still have the desire or feel fit enough to attempt this cruise. I believe that Rock Steady Boxing has played a big part in that. I thought it would be good to try to give something back. Left the boat in Lombok… and traded sails for surf, rice fields, and a bit of Bali chaos. After hopping aboard a ferry that felt more “adventure” than “transportation,” we made it to Bali in one slightly rattled piece. What followed was a weekend full of surprises: We wandered through the stunning Ubud rice terraces — yes, it’s crowded, yes, there are lines for photos… but the natural beauty still shines through and makes it all worth it. Tried Kopi Luwak, the famously expensive coffee made from civet poop — surprisingly smooth, if you don’t think about the process too much. Sampled a full flight of local teas — a mixed bag for the taste buds, but some were genuinely delicious (and the views didn’t hurt). Highlight of the trip? Surfing at Kuta Beach. Between the wipeouts and accidental nose-dives, it turned out to be the most fun we had all weekend. But before we get to that we make a walk in a nature reserve on Menorca. Finally the Mistral give in and we get a weather window to sail back to Mallorca and on the way we catch our first fish and it´s a beautiful tuna that really gave Anders a fight. We are a middle aged couple that has left our hectic business lives to go sailing with our sailboat Fridá af Wisby and our cat Litza. Our goal is sail the Mediterrainean Sea and really enjoy life. Anders has been at the sea most of his life and sailed for the Swedish national dingy sailing team as a young man. Gitte has also grown up with boats and spent every summer sailing with her father as a teenager. Onboard we also have our cat Litza a 4 year old Devon Rex we call her the cattain because cats always decide over their humans. In this episode we mix boat projects with some social time. Bouncing between the southern "Secret Gili Islands" of Gili Asahan and Gili Gede, as well as the more northern Gili island of Gili Air, we get to hang out with other fun cruisers including Don and Wally on Koro Vita, the crew of Viento del Mar, the Youtubers Sailing Ripple Effect on their boat Sailing Seabattical, Hank, and more. Ripple Effect organized a social gathering they call a Floatchella, inspired by the Coachella music festival. Unfortunately the plan of doing a large raft-up was thwarted by strong gusty winds in the anchorage area, so it ended up being a marina pool party instead. We also do a bit of snorkeling, scuba, skurfing/wakeboarding, and get to try a surfski kayak. And exploring southwest Lombok by scooter. Gili Air has no motorized vehicles, so horse-drawn buggies and bicycles are common. Boat projects include: - in-water changing of sail drive collar anodes (zincs); - rewiring an air conditioner blower unit to make the fan speeds work properly; - inspecting and re-hoisting the jib-sail, which had been sent out for a repair. Like many people in Japan and around the world, I was deeply saddened by the recent boating tragedy in Okinawa, where a 17-year-old student and a 71-year-old captain lost their lives. A number of you have reached out asking questions—especially in comparison to the La Vagabonde incident. These are very different situations. In this short video, I share a few immediate thoughts and explain why I’ll be releasing a longer video soon to clarify: the legal requirements for boats and captains in Japan what a weather advisory really means and what good seamanship looks like for everyone on board This topic is personal for me. I’m a sailor. I’m 71 years old. I’ve served on the board of a high school. And I’m a grandfather whose grandson goes on school trips. I’m also recording this while attending a conference on aging here in Tokyo—which adds another layer to how I think about responsibility and judgment. More to come soon. In the meantime, my thoughts and prayers are with the families and all those affected.
