Vlog#3 We got an early start as we had a long sail ahead of us, head up the Straight of Juan da Fuca. It was dead calm so we motored along and got some boat jobs done. Once we got to the mouth of the straight we got some pretty good headwind and managed to get into the anchorage at Neah Bay before dark. We checked out the museum which was amazing, but unfortunately not cameras allowed, you'll have to see it for yourself. We headed out really early in the fog into the Pacific Ocean for our very first time. Once the fog lifted it was calm and we motored up to La Push. Once we started getting close to shore the waves got massive and we couldn't see the entrance so we decided to call the coast guard and get them to lead us in. Living on board a sail boat during retirement we have noticed that the wear and tear has gone up massively from our usual 6 weeks aboard when we were working. So this weeks episode shows us carrying out more maintenance. Its not all glory living on a sail boat, so many jobs need doing to keep us in good shape for future sailing. You can see how we remove brown and black satins from the hull prior to polishing and what its like to remove a 20 year old sticky backed vinyl stripe. It was not as bad as I expected. This winter we had family from Spain coming to visit us. We wanted to show him the Pacific Northwest from the sea. This is a key step in the conversion to Vida being a fully electric, zero carbon footprint boat. We have 8 batteries that are going in bilge and to protect them they will be in a fully watertight compartment. In this video the saloon floor get cut away and the bilge prepared. Two and a half years ago, when we bought Vida, she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings (much of it not working). We have removed all the gas, diesel, and paraffin equipment as well as all the plumbing and electrics. We have composting toilets, are installing an electric motor and all electric cooking. We are fitting a huge solar array and probably a wind generator. We have replaced all the windows, removed all the headlining and more. We are replacing all the standing rigging with Dyneema synthetic rigging. This is the biggest sustainability project of our lives as we prepare for a retirement when we want to cruise the world using zero fossil fuels on a very low budget.
