Day 5. Back to working on the engine. I was trying to charge the batteries during the night when something went wrong. Looking back, I had let them get too low before charging, so that part is on me. Still… not exactly what you want to be dealing with. And of course, it happened in the middle of the night. I managed to fix it for the moment and get some charge back into the batteries, enough to get through the night and deal with it properly in daylight. The next day, another issue showed up. But this time, I was working on it in daylight for a change, which already made everything feel a lot more manageable. With some help from my very good (and very patient) online community, I worked through it step by step. And now… everything is charging properly again. Back on track. Hopefully it stays that way so I can keep the livestream running without interruptions. I’m also starting to feel better physically, which is a big relief. Not fully there yet, but definitely improving. And through all of this, the sailing has actually been kind to us. Comfortable conditions, steady movement, nothing too demanding. The Trimaran Spindrift 2 is expected around 19:00 at OUESSANT and around 10:00 p.m. at the Trinité sur Mer. To undertake the crewed around-the-world record is as much about the human adventure as it is a technical and sporting challenge. The men and women working alongside Dona Bertarelli and Yann Guichard at Spindrift racing have been preparing this race against the clock for almost three years. The target: to sail around the world in less than 45 days, 13 hours and 42 minutes. The tough record they will try to beat was set by Loïck Peyron and his crew in 2012 on Banque Populaire V, which was renamed Spindrift 2 a year later. The French-Swiss team decided to use the same 40 m trimaran because they believed that the boat could be further optimised, a task that sailors, engineers and technicians at the team have been working on ever since. After countless hours of work at the boatyard and 40,000 nautical miles of racing and training, the Spindrift racing-prepared trimaran is all set to go. The team will officially go on stand-by on October 19th and wait for the ideal weather window. We LOVE going to Vietnam for many reasons, but the coffee culture is definitely one of them. We were spoiled in the North this trip as we discovered a new kind of coffee, egg coffee. It is fabulous. And, we overindulged on our milk coffee and coconut coffee. They never disappoint. And, the people watching in the Old Quarter never disappoints. There's definitely a hierarchy to the cafe culture - the egg coffee at Cafe Giang was definitely the best as was their chocolate coffee. But, when does iced coffee on a hot afternoon disappoint? A gentle sail to test the rigging of our two Squibs and a Soling (the latter not in this video). The winds later picked up, unfortunately sailing single handed and just using my mobile, proved to difficult to take the best part of the sail. We sailed down wind to Normanton Church and then cross wind between the Peninsula and the Church at a reason speed. After a while headed up wind towards Rutland Sailing Club and the right up the southern leg of Rutland Water, with the wind on on my port beam. All in all a rather nice first sail of the season.

Liveaboard trip with the Whale Sharks and unexplored reefs of Cenderawasih Bay, West Papua, Indonesia. It's the largest National Park in Indonesia, but remote and not easy to get there. It worth the trip. Not touristic, not developed, you won't find a souvenir shop in the National Park (yet). Interesting aquatic life with so many endemics and other species which are rarely seen by recreational divers out of the bay. Untouched and pristine coral reefs. The unique opportunity of diving and swimming with the largest fish known on our oceans, the Whale Sharks. The Whale Sharks in Cenderawasih Bay are protected and developed a different behavior with the fisherman for over decades, at least 50 years. Due this different behavior staying around at the fishing platforms, scientists could collect more data and even deploy satellite tags to better understand their behavior. This was my last trip of 2022 season in Cenderawasih Bay and it was the cherry on the top! Amazing weather conditions, awesome group of divers and lots of Whale Sharks with good visibility! After we left Solomons Island, we were ready to get south as the temps there were dropping. We had several long days of cruising with a few extended stops in places we visited on the way north. We buddy boated with Ocean Cowboy and Nickelby from the Solomons to Langley, VA where we anchored near the Air Force base. From there, we headed to Norfolk and then Chesapeake, VA with Ocean Cowboy. After we left the free docks at Chesapeake, VA we cruised 3 long days that brought us to Beaufort, NC where we spent a few days recharging.
