Friday June 13th 2020 a little night sailing. Sailed from 5 to about Midnight then slept in the boat in the slip. It started out 5 to 10 mph winds and by 8:00 it was more like 20-25 mph. The weather service was only predicting 10-15 mph. I heaved to cooked up my dinner, spaghettios and tea. Then sailed around a little and headed back to the slip.

In this episode, we sail to Emerald Bay, Catalina Island, in search of a vacant, protected anchorage. Emerald Bay gets a little rolley and there were already two sailboats anchored in our preferred spot. We divert to the Isthmus Cove and drop the hook in about 90 feet of water.

Its a lovely warm winter's day again, so back at the boatyard to do some more fibreglassing. We also experience the funny tide here at Fiddlers Ferry. It rushes in over the course of about 1-1.5 hours and then ebbs out slowly for the next 10 hours. On a spring tide you often see a bow wave coming in on the tide. L’idée maîtresse du projet a été de lancer sur le marché un vrai powercat « tout-terrain » à la fois inspiré par les bateaux de travail et innovant grâce à des carènes asymétriques reliées par un foil central capable d’optimiser l’équation vitesse/consommation/passage en mer. Les coques en aluminium sont protégées par d’impressionnants listons épais ; partout sur le pont, l’échantillonnage des pièces soudées est impressionnant. Le 46 Explorer est aménagé de manière très rustique avec une seule cabine double relativement spartiate mais différentes possibilités de personnalisation permettent de gagner en confort, à l’image du flybridge fermé par des toiles. A 20 nœuds, la consommation est réduite selon le constructeur de 30%, ce qui permet d’offrir une autonomie de plus de 200 milles. On notera que la conception du foil n’empêche pas le Vandal de beacher – on est un explorateur ou on ne l’est pas… Un deuxième modèle de 18 m est à l’étude.
