Well, we had to slog on down the Intracoastal Waterway with more motorsailing, more grey skies, and more bridges but we made it to the beautiful seaside town of Carolina Beach. And, the beach there was beautiful! It was just the change of scenery we needed for a nice reset. Then it was down the Cape Fear River and out into the Atlantic Ocean for some beautiful sailing south. Of course we broke the steering a bit, but that was easily patched up with a temporary fix. This version of Episode 54 includes minimal edits to video and audio. This is intended to allow us to roll out more videos weekly in order to encourage greater engagement with our audience, and also to allow us to catch up to current time a bit quicker. I participated in "Running Out of Time - Climate Relay 2022" by carrying the baton across the world’s busiest shipping lane, the Dover Strait, from England to France, all done under sail. It was important for us to play a critical part in this relay, which is an epic fossil-fuel-free 7,767 km non-stop relay from Glasgow, Scotland, the host city of the UN's COP26 international meeting on Climate Change to Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, host of COP27. The Climate Relay, being run between 30th September and 6th November 2022, 24/7 across 18 countries, is organised by the charity Carbon Copy, to raise awareness of climate issues and the power of community action to meet this enormous challenge. For us, our leg across the English Channel was also a challenge by itself. We left Lorient, France on a Friday afternoon, sailed upwind for 32 hours, picked up the baton under sail from a rower on the English side and dropped it off to a windsurfer on the French side. Then sailed back another 24 hours to Lorient. We were 3 onboard my Imoca Imagine, Pam Lee an Irish professional skipper now living in France, Natasha Gonzalez, a filmmaker from Costa Rica also transplanted to France and myself. What do you do to prepare for a 3 hour helm shift? Do you pack a bag? Grab things on the fly? Long passages require long helm shifts and it's important, especially in high seas, to be prepared. Preparation includes nourishment, safety, and having fun. I always pack a bag that I take with me which guarantees that I have everything I need. This is especially helpful when the seas are big and I am tethered in. Big seas make me want to leave the helm far less frequently so I am very happy to be able to have most things at my finger tips. Solo-sailing my Pearson 26 in a November heat wave in RI. Winds 15-17 knots with gusts up to 24 knots, temperature high in the 70s. Né de la rencontre entre la classe IMOCA qui rassemble les skippers du Vendée Globe et la société lorientaise Azimut, le Défi Azimut, rendez-vous atypique de la course au large, a pour vocation de conjuguer performance, innovation et stratégie. Du sport au meilleur niveau de compétition sur l'eau et beaucoup de convivialité à terre font la marque de fabrique de cette épreuve dont le succès ne se dément pas. Deuxième étape de notre périple au Sine Saloum : cap sur NDangane où nous retrouvons à nouveau les copains bateaux Illika et Touka. Avec eux, nous assistons à une soirée de lutte sénégalaise : envoutant, impressionnant mais sans aucune violence. A NDangane nous profitons aussi des commerces pour faire le plein d’essence et de gasoil, acheter des fruits et des légumes et faire un beau tour en vélo en parcourant les pistes de sable désertiques, la savane avec ses petites cases traditionnelles, rencontrer les villageois et surtout la spontanéité des enfants ! Une opportunité ce fait que nous partons en pirogue traditionnelle dans le bolong ; la rencontre avec deux groupes de pêcheurs nous permet de leur donner un coup de main et de découvrir leur technique de pêche. Les bolong : c’est petit bras de rivière, d’eau salée, de largeur variable, se faufilant dans la mangrove entre les palétuviers … Un plaisir de les parcourir en voilier, en annexe, en paddle ou même à la nage lorsqu’un méandre nous offre une piscine naturelle ! L’eau est aux alentours des 30° ; que demander de plus ? Mar Lodj est un village traditionnel touristique où, avec un guide, nous en apprenons davantage sur leur vie quotidienne et leurs traditions. Des arbres millénaires et sacrés trônent au milieu du village, géants aux troncs entrelacés par les années. Nous terminons la semaine à Maya, toujours avec nos deux copains bateaux, et prévoyons des plans pour les prochaines navigations. L’idée est de rester dans les petits bolongs, pour profiter au maximum des beautés de la nature et être au plus près des villageois. Attention au début de soirée qui peuvent vite tourner au cauchemar si vos lumières sont appréciées de la multitude d’insectes que regorge cette région ! La navigation dans le Sine Saloum est un pur bonheur : les eaux sont calmes, nous profitons des courants et de la marée pour avancer efficacement, nous pouvons naviguer très près des copains et s’amuser de nos différences de performances. Et le summum : les mouillages sont idylliques, tellement calmes, bien plus qu’au port puisqu’aucun bruits d’amarres ou de ponton !
