After Christmas in Norway, Captain Cody goes back to our sailboat Vinyasa in Charleston, SC, to prepare her and solo sail her down to Florida, before gaining a crew member and sailing across to the Bahamas! Which is a HUGE relief as we will need to motor a lot to get around the Peloponnese. We also get to explore the Fortress of New Navarino, which is a HUGE castle on the south side of Navarino Bay. We get awkward on camera, get followed by security, and, most importantly, laura finds the biggest Poo ever. We are here for over a week trying to avoid easterly winds before we start our journey around the infamous "fingers" of the Peloponnese. The dogs also get an ice cream. After spending 3 weeks at our friend's dock in Middle River, Maryland, it was time to head south on the Chesapeake. We were thrilled when Tony and Nancy took us up on our offer to sail with us to Annapolis. Since they are power boaters, it was great to show them what sailing is like. We had amazing winds most of the way there until they died just before we approached the Bay Bridge. Determined to sail under the bridge, we may have cheated with a nudge from our engine to keep us on course. We did get to sail under the bridge at a screaming 2 knots! Once we got into Annapolis, we cruised the mooring field to see if any balls were open but there weren't any. We decided to anchor out for a night and dinghy our guests to shore. E' uno dei migliori fotografi di mare italiani, vincitore di prestigiosi riconoscimenti (tra cui il premio Fujifilm Euro Press Photo Awards per la migliore foto nel 2005) La sfida di Guido Cantini Ma è anche un vero marinaio - con più 30.000 miglia alle spalle - e ha deciso di dimostrarlo (come se ce ne fosse bisogno!) a sé stesso. Come? Iscrivendosi alla Golden Globe Race, il giro del mondo in solitario senza scalo a bordo di scafi "vintage" senza elettronica a bordo, ideato dall'avventuriero/organizzatore Don McIntyre. Cantini (58 anni da Verona), che non sarà il solo italiano a prendere parte alla GGR, con partenza a settembre 2026 da Les Sables d'Olonne, è al momento impegnato nella qualificazione alla regata: ai marinai che prendono parte a questa grande avventura viene richiesto di completare un minimo di miglia di navigazione in solitaria non-stop (4.600 miglia). The 1904 built Maritimo Katwinchar raced to Hobart for the first time in 1951 when a group of English friends sailed her to Sydney from the UK and were persuaded to join the race. Maritimo owner Bill Barry-Cotter was keen to find out what had happened to Katwinchar after his father owned her 1960s, so when the boat was found languishing in a backwater on the Central Coast – and for sale on Gumtree - Bill Barry-Cotter went about restoring her. Skipper Michael Spies who raced her to Hobart in the Double Handed division in 2024 says that Katwinchar has always been a very fast boat – and he’s looking to prove as much, racing her with a full crew in 2025. Amongst his team will be Scott Kaufman, famed yacht designer and sailor and Emma Rankin, a graduate of the 18 Footers academy and the first female skipper to win an 18 foot skiff NSW Championship race.

Thomas Coville and the crew of Sodebo Ultim 3 have rounded Cape Horn, the last of the great Capes in their circumnavigation, in a record time of 26 days, 4 hours, 46 minutes and 25 seconds. The team on the 105 foot long Ultim trimaran have endured a tricky end to their Pacific Ocean crossing, but still remain ahead of the Jules Verne Trophy record pace set by Francis Joyon on IDEC Sport in 2016/17, but they know their journey up the Atlantic will be challenging, and Joyon’s passage, especially in the North Atlantic, was exceptional. While rounding the legendary point is yet another amazing achievement, the team are fully aware that the ultimate goal is far from complete. We take a look at their Pacific Ocean crossing, as well as the whole Jules Verne Trophy route and the other records that the team has broken so far. From Cape Leeuwin, their passage east to the south of Australia and past New Zealand has been a roller-coaster of emotions, as well as having to navigate seas of over five metres at times. Their lead over IDEC Sport dropped to just 15 miles along the length of Australia, and they briefly fell behind record pace to the south of New Zealand, before regaining a lead at the time that Joyon had to travel relatively far north due to the weather systems they encountered back in 2017. At Point Nemo their advantage increased to 200 nautical miles, increasing to over 500, before light winds hampered them on the approach to Cape Horn, halving their lead at the famous landmark. We also look at where they are, and the immediate challenges ahead. Right now, the team are heading upwind to the North East, and will be looking to hook into the favourable winds between Argentina and the Falkland Islands, avoiding light headwinds winds to the East. The routing is complex in this area in the world, and they need a strong passage to the equator as they aim to build a lead of over a thousand nautical miles by the equator, as they know that Joyon’s team had an extraordinary finish when they set the record.
