We sailed our Corsair trimaran from Oahu to Maui for the weekend. We drove the Road to Hana and found the most beautiful waterfall hike I've ever come across. The sailing started intense with sustained winds of 30+ knots and wild short period swell. Just a day later we found ourselves sailing in perfect spinnaker conditions, sledding down waves and riding puffs for miles at time. We drove the Road to Hana and stumbled into an almost hidden hike (with some directions from a friend). At the entrance we found a guava tree with ripe fruit that I snacked on throughout the hike. We hiked through a tropical forest and thick bamboo to find multiple waterfalls with deep pools perfect for cliff jumping. Absolute paradise. It was magical diving in the Exumas! The next day we came into a very bad realisation. The weather is going to be crazy in the coming days. So we decided to head to Nassau to get a little protection from it. After we arrived the storm finally hit us. The winds were very fast but luckily we were safe. The next day we went to church and welcomed our new guests, it's Gina's sister! FRANÇOIS GABART: THE NIGHT A WHALE ALMOST CHANGED HIS DESTINY François Gabart, one of the greatest French sailors, is celebrated for his legendary achievements, such as winning the Vendée Globe and setting the solo circumnavigation world record. Among the countless challenges he has faced at sea, one stands out: the night he narrowly avoided a fatal collision with a whale. It was a calm ocean night. The sky was clear, but the pitch-black darkness of the Atlantic made everything beneath the surface invisible. François was sailing at incredible speeds aboard his trimaran MACIF, propelled by steady winds cutting through the waves. The boat seemed to glide effortlessly over the ocean, but at such speeds, every second matters, and every decision could mean the difference between life and death. THE UNEXPECTED DANGER As François monitored the onboard instruments, a sudden signal caught his attention: the boat’s sensors detected an unusual movement directly in the trimaran’s path. With his heart racing, François quickly realized it was a whale, a massive marine giant, obliviously drifting into his trajectory. A collision at such high speed would have been catastrophic. The force of the impact could have shattered the trimaran, throwing François into the open sea and endangering both his life and the whale's. A CRUCIAL REACTION In an instant, François shifted from calm focus to razor-sharp concentration. His experience and instincts took over as he made split-second decisions with unshakable composure: He immediately reduced speed, adjusting the sails to ease the wind pressure and slow the trimaran as quickly as possible. Using the rudder, he calculated an immediate course change, veering slightly while maintaining full control of the vessel. He ensured the trimaran remained stable throughout the maneuver, avoiding the risk of capsizing. The tension was immense. At such speeds, a few meters could mean the difference between life and disaster. The trimaran passed within a hair’s breadth of the whale. François still vividly remembers the image of the animal’s tail vanishing into the darkness, a stark reminder of how close he had come to tragedy. A LESSON IN COEXISTENCE WITH THE SEA After the danger passed, François took a deep breath of relief. The night returned to calm, but his heart continued to race. Reflecting on the incident later, François shared his thoughts: "At sea, we are guests. The oceans belong to them too, to the creatures that inhabit them. It is our duty to protect them and coexist with them in harmony." This experience deepened François' commitment to marine safety. Following the incident, he became an advocate for the development of advanced technologies to detect and protect marine wildlife, especially cetaceans, during ocean races. That night in the Atlantic was a powerful reminder for all sailors: the ocean is a magnificent but unpredictable place, and coexisting with its creatures requires respect, vigilance, and appropriate technology. With his composure and experience, François Gabart not only saved his life but also that of an extraordinary creature, once again proving why he is considered one of the greatest sailors of our time.

Unser Segelboot Squib, ein Catalac 9M, ist in die Jahre gekommen, die Verkleidung hängt teilweise von der Decke, die Farbe blättert ab, die Elektrik auf dem Stand des vorigen Jahrtausends,..... Ein Refit steht an. Doch Broterwerb und Verpflichtungen lassen es nicht zu, monatelang in Griechenland am Boot zu arbeiten. Da wird schon 2018 die Idee geboren Squib nach Wien zu bringen, wo man jederzeit Zugang hat, der Einkauf von Material in der Muttersprache abgewickelt werden kann und alles Andere seinen gewohnten Verlauf nimmt. 2021 war es dann endlich soweit, mit zwei komplett überholten Motoren und einem neuen Geräteträger starteten wir Anfang Juli Richtung Südfrankreich.Leider hatten wir für die gesamte Reise nur zwei Monate Zeit, deswegen hieß es die meiste Zeit Strecke machen. Doch manchmal nahmen wir uns die Zeit zu verweilen, uns Orte näher anzuschauen. Greek Food, dancing, propeller, exhaust, huge crane, exercise, Karen in the engine room, retsina, saganaki, dolmas, Orion, dophins Thanks to suggestions from our wonderful viewers, we got a little more aggressive with polishing the propeller. It turns out it is bronze and now it looks really nice. There is a slight exhaust leak between the Cummins 4BT-3.9m engine flange where it connects to the riser that serves as the exit for exhaust. Steve has contacted both a mechanic who came to the boat and an exhaust professional via email. We’ve gotten two different strategies for properly sealing the flange to prevent further leakage. The situation still needs a bit more research on how to proceed before we decide exactly how to solve the issue, so stay tuned for an update in a later episode. We’re still working on some Greek dance moves and tried dancing on the dock instead of on deck. It’s a little easier, but the dock is floating so it also moves. Keeping with the Greek theme we had a wonderful meal with many traditional Greek foods. Fried saganaki cheese, dolmades (we just call them dolmas), hummus with pita bread and an olive feta cheese medley adorned our table. Some Retsina wine completed the menu. Perhaps that meal will improve our dancing???? It was interesting watching some construction on a new marina. Big cranes and dock sections. Speaking of traditions, we know all over the world there are different cultural traditions as the holiday season is upon us. Here, we will celebrate Christmas with the arrival of family members and friends. Hoping that all of you have a wonderful and safe holiday with lots of joy and the making of new fond memories.
