After the tangled anchors drifting out to sea debacle last week we experienced last week, I sent everyone off to have some down time away from the boat. Daniel would go to Athens and then rendezvous with us in Malta, in particular though Elayna I thought needed a bit of a break. She and Kayla went to the island of Ios which is actually where Elayna and I met. It was a shame I couldn't get there myself but we still needed to get the boat back La Grande Motte before leaving the Mediterranean and I knew from previous experience how difficult it gets rushing from East to West in the Med late in the season. Winter Is Coming. To be honest its the least I could do. If you guys could only see how much time and effort Elayna puts into just one episode you would fall off your chair. I can't edit movies like she can but I can sail a boat by myself to keep the team heading in the right direction. I intended to sail solo from Greece to Malta but that was before I met Houmaid, one of the most interesting guys I've come across. After some provisioning and intense discussions about the weather, we set sail for Malta. 30 Years ago when facing retirement, Henk and Lucy decided to build a 41ft custom steel sailboat in their front lawn. It took them 4 years to build and after that they set sail for 30 years around Asia. Their dream has always been to sail to the Mediterranean. Because we are building a boat with HH Catamarans, and their main factory is here…we were able to get business visas.  And we have been ALL business with our trips (turns out managing a new boat build is a full-time job). Thankfully, our boat is on the final stretch and sea trials begin soon.  Which means we will be ready to sail out of here before the end of the month! But we are in China!  A country we never thought we would have the opportunity to see, much less experience.  There’s no way we could let ourselves sail out of here without exploring at least a little bit of the country first.  So, we decided to take a one-week hiatus from the factory and do exactly that. China is a huge country with some of the most incredible landscapes we’ve never seen.  Luckily, China has the biggest highspeed railway network in the world.  So, we decided to pick a direction and go as far as we could.  A 2100km journey from Xiamen to the start of the Tibet Mountains in the Yunnan Province. She's been built by CRN, the Ancona shipyard founded in 1963 and it is today part of Ferretti Group. There are a good 180 CRN mega yachts currently cruising. Cloud 9 is 74 meters long, 13.5 meters wide; the hull is made of steel and over the deck is made of aluminum. She is been tailor made for his owner who lives here with his family for long periods; she is his home and from here he also organizes his work. For him and his family, a private area of 400 square meters. Zuccon International Project has drawn the exterior lines and Winch Design has dealt with the external guest areas and interior décor. Burgess, a highly professional service company in the world of superyacht, has supervised all the phases relating to his construction, from the design to the final technical checks. There are cabins for 12 guests and 22 crew members; in theory it is as if every guest had two crew members for him. If used privately, she can carry 16 people in 7 cabins in addition to the suite master. Cloud 9 has 6 decks. She has 6,000 miles of autonomy at 12 knots and she can cross the oceans. Thanks to two Caterpillar 3516C-Chd 2682 hp @1600 rpm engines, Cloud 9 has a maximum speed of 16.5 knots and the highest cruising speed is 15 knots. Here in Long Beach, CA at Alamitos Bay Marina we have a boat auction twice per year. Come with me and watch people bid on sailboats and power boats. This time the bidding goes nuts; some boats sell for a lot and some don't get a bid at all even though the opening bid at the auction for "boats in the water" is only $400. These boats are usually in pretty bad shape but this time there was one sailboat, a Cal 46, that was in really good condition and the selling price was on par. Last auction a lot of sailboats didn't get a bid or sold for very cheap but this auction was different because more sailboats sold at this auction. This was a fun boat auction to watch but the inventory was a little low if you ask me.
