In this stage of the build, a major milestone is reached as all the temporary structural supports and moulds are released. With the main beams now in place and local stiffening completed where needed, the wet deck and hulls have been bonded together as a strong, solid platform. It’s the first moment where she really starts to look like a boat as you move around her. Looking down from above, the interior layout is beginning to reveal itself too. At this point it can feel a little untidy, an unavoidable and familiar phase in the build process, but the structure is doing exactly what it should, the form is emerging, and everything released just as it should. The yard is packed this December, and while we’re well protected from the recent run of strong gales, the relentless West Country rain has taken its toll. With flooding across the region, the ground is decidedly soggy, as you’ll see in the background. Still, progress continues, and we’re very much looking ahead to the next phases, when everything starts to come together for real.

► Although the Cape Town–based shipyard Voyage Yachts has produced several models such as the 480 and 580, since 2020 its range had been reduced to the very comfortable Voyage 590, whose build quality we were able to see firsthand at the yard three years ago. ► Since last July, a more compact model, the 510, has completed the range offered by this bluewater cruising specialist. Our correspondent Jonathan was able to discover this offshore catamaran, which benefits from high freeboard and well-designed aft circulation, including dock access through a cut-out in the bulwarks and lowered side decks. ► “The 510 is first and foremost a catamaran designed to accommodate a large number of people on board in well-assumed comfort,” Jonathan reports. “At nearly 16 meters long and close to 8 meters wide, this new model offers a very pleasant living space. The cockpit is spacious, welcoming, and naturally oriented toward the outdoors. Inside, movement is fluid, the cabins are comfortable and bright, and the overall atmosphere is warm. The goal here is not to chase a ‘wow’ effect at all costs, but rather balance and coherence. Under sail, the 510 favors smooth motion with her 22 tons. She moves forward steadily, without harshness, providing a very reassuring sense of security. It’s a catamaran that puts you at ease, that supports her crew without ever being abrupt. We bought a boat without a sea trial because it was buried in the back of the yard. Spending two huricane seasons on the hard we did all we could to recondition the boat for the passage. Now its time to head out. Not all the systems tested but if it is going to happen it will happen out there.

It’s haul-out time for ARGO. In this episode we lift ARGO out of the water and onto the hard stand for her annual maintenance. After a good power wash, Jason gets started on what should have been a simple job – changing the sail drive oil. But things quickly take a turn. When the oil comes out milky, it’s a sign every boat owner dreads – water has entered the sail drive, and that usually means an expensive repair. Thankfully we find a fantastic marine mechanic on site who helps track down the problem and get things sorted. While he’s at it, we finally solve a nagging issue we’ve been having with the anodes. Not exactly the start we planned for this haul out… but that’s boat life. In the next episode the real work begins – Jason takes on sanding the hulls himself in preparation for antifoul and Prop Speed. The pressure is on to get a professional result. Thanks for watching.
