What does it actually take to build a catamaran that's safe, livable, and fast — without compromising any of the three? https://balancecatamarans.com/built-to-last-the-engineering-philosophy-behind-our-catamarans/ Phil Berman & Dean Paarman sit to to break down the engineering philosophy behind Balance Catamarans, from Du Toit Yacht Design's role in laminate schedules and structural integrity, to why major components are built to a 2:1 safety factor — double the calculated load. We also get into the real tradeoffs between weight, durability, and comfort: why glass wins over Lexan, why storage volume matters on a cruising cat, and what CE Category A offshore certification actually means for a boat's resale value and safety. Plus — the escape hatch debate, why beam-to-length ratio determines how well your cat sails in light air, and the reefing guidelines that keep you from flying a hull. 00:00 Engineering and Certification 01:24 Safety Factors and Weight 02:58 Materials and Livability Tradeoffs 04:01 Escape Hatches Debate 05:15 CE vs US Standards 05:51 Beam Width and Stability 07:03 Reefing and No Hull Flying 07:40 Wrap Up and Guidelines Link: https://balancecatamarans.com/design-for-safety/ Link: https://balancecatamarans.com/built-to-last-the-engineering-philosophy-behind-our-catamarans/ Catamaran Conversations with Patrick Shaughnessy: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_ZKlaZSmtsRpY6CxjveL9BKi5k3mQwkx

This is the Cruising Life! In Episode 168, We finally get prepared enough to begin our cruising season. The shakedown portion was a simple motor-sail from Jolly Harbour to Falmouth harbour, both in Antigua, followed by a couple of weeks at anchor and quick stop at the Catamaran Marina (also in Falmouth). Such was not ideal, as it’s a full 98 nautical miles from Antigua to Sint Maarten, and boats have gone missing never to be seen again on this passage. Yes, there are other islands nearby, namely Barbuda, Saint Kitts and Nevis, St Barts, and Saba, but it’s amazing how far off they really are if you get in trouble. And as for sailing at night with no moon, you’d better have working, modern radar or you’ll never see squalls forming until it's too late. Luckily, we had no drama, and even less footage of the actual passage, which is typical for night crossings, since the cameras don’t work so well. But it does carry the advantage of arriving during the day when we can get a bridge opening into the lagoon and don’t have to navigate near land in the dark. We also do a boat tour, now that Talisman is somewhat presentable. There’s probably a decent amount of interest here for future cruisers looking to find out what makes a great cruising boat. Episode 251 We set off from Batemans Bay bound for Eden… until a sudden weather change forces us to divert into Bermagui. What starts as a detour turns into an unexpected highlight: we meet some huge bull rays right off the wharf, explore the town and cycle out into the country where we stumble into a tiny historic village complete with an cheese factory. Proof once again that the best cruising moments happen when plans fall apart. Is the Coast Guard watching you right now? It doesn't take much to get pulled over on the water. One missing sticker, one burnt-out light, or one wrong turn near a restricted zone is all it takes to trigger a full boarding inspection. And if you aren't prepared, that "routine check" can turn into fines, citations, or a terminated voyage. In this video, we break down 10 Things That Will Get You Pulled Over by the Coast Guard in 2026. From the obvious safety violations to the sneaky environmental rules you might not know about, we cover everything you need to avoid. We discuss: Registration Red Flags: Why faded numbers are an instant target. The "Overloaded" Look: How weight distribution catches their eye. Erratic Maneuvers: Why weaving or drifting looks suspicious. Flag Etiquette: How flying the wrong flag can get you stopped. Restricted Zones: The invisible lines that trigger an armed response. Stay safe, stay legal, and keep the blue lights in your rearview. ⏱️ CHAPTERS: 00:00 Intro: When the Blue Lights Flash 00:48 1. Missing or Expired Registration Numbers 01:45 2. Comece a estudar, assistir vídeos e ler livros.
