Sometimes the weather decides how long you stay — and in Arctic Norway, that can turn a sailing stop into something much more interesting. In this episode, we leave the tiny island community of Myken and sail towards the remote Træna archipelago, just north of the Arctic Circle. What begins as a short passage soon becomes an extended stay as rough seas and strong winds build between us and our next destination. Our final days on Myken don’t quite go to plan. Much of the footage we filmed there was accidentally lost, but we still get to share a glimpse of this remarkable island: a community of only 13 permanent residents, an extraordinarily well-stocked grocery shop, and a distillery created after two fellow sailors were stranded here by bad weather. From Myken, we make the roughly 20-nautical-mile passage to Træna in beautiful conditions, crossing remarkably shallow, clear water before carefully making our way into the harbour. With deteriorating weather approaching, Træna becomes our home for longer than expected — and gives us plenty of time to discover what lies beyond the harbour. We explore the islands by bike and on foot, visit the historic wooden Træna Church, and discover the extraordinary story of Theodore and Alma: a brother and sister separated by thousands of miles between Norway and Hawaii, connected through letters, a Kodak camera and photographs that eventually became an invaluable record of island life. We also visit the Petter Dass Chapel before taking an early ferry to another island for one of the strangest hikes we’ve encountered so far — straight through a dark tunnel inside the mountain. On the other side we find dramatic coastal scenery, an unusual public shelter overlooking an anchorage and Kirkhelleren, a huge cave where evidence shows people were gathering thousands of years ago. Meanwhile, the weather offshore isn’t improving. With significant wave heights around 2.5–3 metres and maximum waves forecast even higher, we decide there is little reason to force the next passage. Instead, we stay in Træna, watch the forecasts and wait for the sea to settle. Sometimes cruising isn’t about getting somewhere. SONAS is a truly special Beneteau Oceanis 58 for two very good reasons. First, she features the same highly desirable aft configuration as the later Oceanis 60. Secondly, and perhaps even more importantly, she has undergone a comprehensive refit during 2025/2026. The 140 hp Volkswagen diesel engine and generator have been completely overhauled, the water maker has been comprehensively refurbished, and the entire electrical system has been rewired. Almost all pumps and hoses have been renewed, while a new lithium battery bank has been installed. The rig has received equally thorough attention. The mast was removed, the rig fully checked, and all items requiring renewal were replaced. SONAS is also equipped with a bow thruster, feathering propeller, new inverter/charger, new solar panels, a partly renewed B&G navigation suite, electric winches, and much more. Another major advantage is her generous fuel and water capacity, making SONAS particularly well suited to extended cruising and providing greater independence from shore facilities. The current owner purchased SONAS in 2025 and, after completing this comprehensive refit, has now decided to put her back on the market. Why? Quite simply, a change of plans. The reason has nothing to do with the yacht herself — she is now ready for her next owner to enjoy. The shallow staircase leads down into a remarkably spacious and comfortable saloon, which has also benefited from the refit. SONAS now features five brand new air-conditioning units, together with a new dishwasher, new microwave, new fridge, new washing machine, a new Smart TV, etc. She is also equipped with Webasto heating, an electrically operated raising and lowering washboard, electric blinds, etc. The interior offers a practical three-cabin layout plus a separate crew cabin in the bow. The generous owner’s cabin forward features a central double bed, ample storage, a vanity, and an ensuite bathroom with electric head and separate shower compartment. The two guest cabins are situated aft, on either side of the companionway. Both cabins have their own private bathroom, each with an electric toilet, and separate shower compartment. This is not simply a yacht that has been “freshened up”. SONAS has been thoroughly refitted, giving her next owner the opportunity to step aboard a beautifully presented Oceanis with a substantial amount of work already completed. SONAS is a Gaelic-Irish word that basically means Happiness. And having seen what has gone into her, we can honestly say: we are very happy to present her.
