One of our biggest fears sailing across oceans is sinking out at sea, along with pirates, lightning, and injury. We hear about boats hitting containers and whales out in the middle of nowhere. We run out of luck 1000 miles from shore and strike a UFO mid ocean during our second transatlantic bluewater crossing. #sailing #yacht #collision More about us at https://www.sweetruca.com After having a collision with a whale in the middle of the night, we have to get in the water mid ocean and inspect the damage to the rudder. So who is this crazy sailing couple making fun videos to share? Well, we are Kate and Curtis. We both sold up and headed out to sea, with the goal of sailing around the world via Cape Horn and the Cape of Good Hope. We brought our mixed rescue dog along with us as she loves sailing and swimming too! Our boat is a year 2000 J Boats J/46. We searched for 3 years for our perfect sailboat for sale, when we found it, we knew it was the one. We spent 6 months re-fitting it in Rhode Island and then went for our shakedown voyage in Maine. We stopped in Annapolis for a bit to do some more refit work and offshore modifications, then we set off to the open sea. We went to the Bahamas, Miami, US Virgin Islands, BVI, Grenada, Carriacou, St. Maarten, where we enjoyed outdoor adventures, scuba diving, and have now did an Atlantic Crossing to the Azores where we had a chance to fly our DJI drone (and learned how to fly a drone from a boat) and one of our favorite past times, mountain biking. After leaving the Azores we sailed to Tenerife. From there we have left on a huge voyage, transatlantic again, this time to South America as we head for our goal of rounding cape horn to enter the pacific ocean. We have sailed over 10,000 bluewater miles to date. We watched other sailing channels before we left as well. We even considered van life, a tiny home, or a motorhome / RV. Some of the channels we enjoyed were Gone with the Wynns, Project Atticus, and MJ Sailing. We didn't really set out to be influencers, but we wanted to return the good karma and pass our inspiration and knowledge along. WELCOME!!! To this full in-depth boat tour of a beautiful 1987 S2 35C. "Freda Kai" is a center cockpit sloop rigged monohull sailboat. She has a 6' draft, 50' air draft, 12'6" beam and a 29hp Volvo engine. Sailing at an average speed of 5.9 knots. While sporting 720w of solar panels, it easily makes all it's own electricity. S/V Freda Kai has been sailed solo and with crew by my good friend, mentor, and buddy boat Jay Safro. This boat has been his home for the past eight years and more than 12,000nm. From this boat Jay loves to explore and go on adventures wherever his anchor rests across the Caribbean. Choosing to spend most of this time on anchor rather than a marina, like a true sailor should. This is a humble, and comparatively affordable sailboat. But I think that is an upside. Because unlike most catamarans and other larger vessels. Freda Kai is highly affordable and has an very low cost to maintain. Allowing Jay to be able to sail and cruise full time. Without worry about breaking the bank. Earning money here and there when he needs to by working as an upholster on other boats, or doing fiberglass and any other job that might need to be done on a wide range of boats. Jay is truly a jack of all trades, and has been an insightful influence on my own sailing and cruising lifestyle over the past several years. Jay has future plans of changing and adding just a few systems to his boat. Mainly a water-maker. But all in all, this boat has been and is a fully capable ocean going cruiser. Wow wow and wow. We navigated through two reefs using an old chart we had found on the internet. Mix that with an overcast day and we were sorta pushing it... but we made it to the inside of Beveridge Reef! Completely ​uninhabited, ​with ​the clearest blue water you’ll ever see (even on an overcast day) and some now well​-​fed reef sharks lurking in the pass. Still devo about losing that Tuna. Despite the fact we didn’t have the best weather for our stay, it was still one of the most surreal feelings I’ve ever had just being anchored there. It was the last day of our event weekend and we spent it out at sea, with a hangover, a bunch of La Vagabondes sisters, friends and family.. not to mention seriously the best food we’ve ever eaten (thanks to Austin, Diana and the team at Frenchie Restaurant in Paris). We start moving some stuff onboard, but couldn’t yet officially unpack the tooth brushes. Not long now and we’ll be settled in to our new beautiful home. Hard screwing, sanding, staining; lots of DIY projects. We've made several improvements to the galley to enhance its looks and functionality. Several new shelves, one with self closing glides and another that swings out. Karen just loves the glides. After a lot of screwing at some difficult angles, Steve got a new tool! The battery operated nail gun just makes things a lot easier. The new tile counter really modernized and lightened up the galley. Dancing in the galley. We’d completed our first sail in La Vagabonde, about 230nm from La Grande Motte to the Balearic Islands - Spain! The last time we were in Mallorca was in 2014, when we arrived with a broken rudder. We spent weeks working with Gregor (do you guys remember this legend from early on in the videos?) and his mate who was a welder, but also had claustrophobia so he couldn’t actually come down below to do all the measurements himself… so instead he stood outside while Riley climbed into the dark hole, about the size of a mouses house and yelled out the measurements to him. We didn’t have time or energy to explore the island, so it’s good to be back again with a whole different set of circumstances. It’s Rileys birthday!!! I make a plywood pattern from the old keel, then plane the surfaces of the new wood, before using a custom chainsaw jig to cut the rolling bevels. Poncho the parrot watches as we manoeuvre the heavy timber underneath the precariously balanced 20-ton boat, using jacks, rollers and levers. Finally – fresh timber in the boat!
