I asked them to give me their short NBBL and boy! it was very different from ours. But I was literally taking photos and adding items to our New Boat Build List as we went along - what an inspiration this tour was! Frank and Danielle really thought outside of the box and should be so proud of their creation. I must say, the beginning of our 236nm sail from Niue to Vava’u - Tonga was a bit of a downer, considering the auto pilot had once again stopped working and this meant we would be hand steering for 2 days. Any old salt would have probably just stayed in Niue until it was fixed, but us kids decided to keep going and sort it out when we got to Tonga. We’d heard nothing but good things​ about the place from fellow sailors and we were super keen on exploring a new destination. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. Most sailors would take it slow for the shakedown period and coastal cruise for the first month or so while they get to know the vessel. But, we don’t have that luxury. Because this boat was built for export and once completed, it must be exported out of the country. So no local cruising for us. Due to the weather patterns and time of year, our best option right now is to sail the 600+ miles across the South China Sea, through the Taiwan Straits (notoriously treacherous bit of water) and into the Philippines. That’s one helluva first sail!  Welcome to the world S/V CURIOSITY. In other words this is not a shakedown cruise. This is a multi-day Bluewater passage that will have to serve as our shakedown. A short 12 minute 'glimpse' of the 3 1/2 years we spent restoring the former Whitbread Maxi 'Creighton's Naturally' also known as 'FCF Challenger' and 'Ocean Greyhound'. Now known as 'Camara', she was built for the 1981/1982 Whitbread Round the World race and was the first of 10 Ocean 80's built by Southern Ocean Shipyard in the UK. She is a David Alan-Williams & Doug Peterson co-design. When we bought the boat, she was in very sad shape and neglected condition. We knew the only way to do the job properly was to start right back in the beginning which saw us strip the boat to bare hull and start again. With no sponsors, a limited budget and only the two of us working on the boat, it became the biggest project of our lives! There are things we would have liked to do different if we had had no time or budget constraints and there certainly are still many 'projects' we have planned on 'Camara', but we are proud of what we have achieved and hope it gives others the motivation to take on a 'project boat' and breath some new life into a deserving yacht in need of TLC. Please note that Peter is a qualified boat builder and rigger which obviously played a huge part in the outcome of the rebuild. Please also note that there were many different stages, projects etc that are not all shown in the video but I tried my best to show the many stages along the course of the project to give you an idea. You can roll up with enough alcohol belowdecks to make old rum smugglers blush. We're sailing from Antigua to Barbuda with some good winds so we should make good time. The last time we were on Barbuda, it was directly after a hurricane devastated the place, and we're looking forward to see the rebuild. We're really keen to meet our friends for a birthday party after a punishing 3 days of maintenance. It kinda sucks you have to tear up your bed to get to the motors, and any time you get to one thing the stuff piles up, but that's just another little part of life on a boat. This is a bit of an experiment, and you are the guinea pigs he he :) On a recent sail we were inspired by a TED talk on the concept of Slow TV. The idea is to capture an experience from a point of view over a long time span. In this case we were exploring the Maroni river in French Guiana. We hooked up a few Go Pro's on Delos and let them run until the battery went dead. We also recorded the audio separately with our external microphone. The video is 3 hours and 40 minutes long and meant as ambient background with audio. Maybe put it on the TV while you eat or a second monitor while you work. I dunno but hope you enjoy!
