The forecast promised a variable 2 to 4 It was one of those days… when I was just as undecided about my course as the weather was about its own. After about an hour under sail, things began to clear. The wind freshened, steady and kind. And for a time—it was joy. The variety of weather I’ve encountered this day was nothing short of spectacular — like a week, or even a month of impulses, all compressed into a single day. Passing Selsey Bill on the outer route in over 20 knots of wind was a first for me — one I won’t forget. After rounding the cape, I shook out the reefs in a perfect breeze, reaching smoothly toward Portsmouth as darkness settled. The next day , after a muddy hike back to the boat, we do a brisk downwind sail to Opua to start getting ready for our big sail out of New Zealand . The weather does not look good for this passage so we get busy taking a trip on an old vintage railway and set off to find the biggest Kauri trees in New Zealand . In this Episode we depart from Cartagena Marina with our 1979 Contest 36 and sail the Balearic islands of Rormentera, Ibiza and Mallorca. We explore the islands and get a visit from a superyacht. When going on an overnight sail from west to east Mallorca we get our first experience with catabatic winds. We travel with the Scabby Monohull Kids boat group which grows and grows as the weeks go on. We get our watermaker delivered by our friend Melle in his Eagle dayboat from Leonardo Yachts.
