www.wildwater.be © Aquacam / Bruno Van Herck Hoewel 2012 geen fantastisch jaar was voor Sardine Run, zijn we er toch in geslaagd om enkele spektaculaire beelden vast te leggen! Sardine Run - de grootste school op Aarde! Elk jaar, aan de oostkust van Zuid-Afrika, is één van de mooiste natuurwonderen te bezichtigen. Tijdens de Sardine Run trekken miljoenen sardienen door de Indische Oceaan van Kaapstad naar het noorden. Aangevallen door haaien, dolfijnen, walvissen en zeevogels vechten ze een baan door de zee. Het is niet te voorspellen wanneer exact de jacht geopend wordt, maar tussen mei en juli zijn ze te bewonderen. De sardienen trekken van het gebied bij de Kaap zo'n vijftienhonderd kilometer naar Durban in het noorden. Niemand weet waarom, maar men denkt dat het bepaald wordt door voedsel of voortplanting. De scholen sardienen worden achtervolgd door bultrugwalvissen (honderden), witte- koper- en zandtijgerhaaien, zeeleeuwen, tuimelaars (schatting: zo'n vijfduizend), pinguins en duizenden zeevogels. Dit is een ervaring om nooit te vergeten!!!

I got into this anchorage on the southern end of Sardinia, which protected me from the waves outside, but even in the anchorage you can hear how strong the wind is and the rain didn't only fall in England this year. Crossing from the Azores to the Isles of Scilly this August (2012) we encountered three storms. Filming during the storms wasn't practical, the worst of each was at night anyway and it was very scary in the pitch black with 50 knots plus of wind and driving rain. When the wind was at its worst I had to hand steer throughout. This video was taken after one of the storms when the waves subsided enough for the autopilot to cope whilst I filmed. The Raja River on the island of Morotai has 7 small cascades and pools, 2 of which can be visited from the principal town of Daruba on a fun, day-tour of about 11/2 hour's drive, and 1 to 11/2 hour hike one way. Along the road we viist several interesting communities, a monument to Nakamura (a WWII soldier who escaped into the jungle here and was found still hiding from the Allies 30 yrs later). We cross "treacherous" log bridges and hike up the clear Raja River to plunge and swim in the refreshing pristine pools. Filmed in September 2012. Thanks to the Tourism and Culture Office in Daruba for providing transportation, picnic lunch, intrepid drivers and guides.
