(June 23, 2015) – In an online awards show this evening, produced by Gary Jobson and Mitch Brindley with video footage from Gary Jobson and Chris Love Productions and still photography from Rob Migliaccio, the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) announced the 2014-15 All-American Team for the second time in this format. Fifty-three sailors were awarded this great honor. The names of the winners will be added to the ICSA Hall of Fame display located in the Robert Crown Center at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. A committee of representatives from the seven conferences in the ICSA selects the ICSA All-American Team. To select an All-American skipper, the committee evaluates a competitor based on their competitive record in inter-conference competition as well as conference and national championships. The committee analyzes how this record compares to fellow competitors, the quality of the competition the record was achieved in, the span of the record over the fall and spring seasons, results achieved with different crews, and how the record compares to previous All-American winners in past years. For All-American crew selections, the committee uses criteria similar to skipper selection, but also considers: demonstrated leadership (may consider seniority), outstanding body mechanics and boat handling skills as well as proven ability to improve the results of the skipper(s) with whom he or she sails.

So after all the hard work we finally get to have some fun on Rowena, our Red Fox trailer sailer yacht. The wind was pretty strong for the journey down river, and dead on the nose, so as we wanted to make use of the high tide and explore some of the creeks that we never get to visit we had the outboard on for the entire journey. Once there however the wind eased off and we had a wonderful night at anchore in our own little puddle of water, right at the end of the creek. Then for the following morning we had light southerly winds and a very pleasant, easy going, sail back home... although as we needed to be back by lunch time the dreaded outboard had to be fired up again for some bits of the journey just to make sure we weren't late. After eight years of hard work, Ian Walker and his team Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing managed to win the Volvo Ocean Race - the toughest ocean race in the world. This is how it happened.

The fleet completed Leg 9 - the last 1,250nm of the 2014-15 edition of the Volvo Ocean Race. An incredible leg from Lorient to Gothenburg via The Hague, which sealed Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing's triumph.

Leg 8 of 9 of the Volvo Round the World Race is the shortest yet, a comparative sprint of four days from Lisbon, Portugal, to Lorient, France. But the podium pressure means almost no sleep for the crews, plus they have some nasty weather to deal with in the treacherous Bay of Biscay. Coming into Lorient though, this leg is notable for some glorious results…

Around-the-world with Harken’s Tech Team - Part 7 Harken Tech Team: Lisbon Mark Gardner Max Ronchetti Simon Botes Mauro Vigano Leg 7 Review May 17th saw the start of one of the Volvo Ocean Races trademark legs: Newport, Rhode Island to Lisbon, Portugal. The fleet started with an amazing send off from the local race fans and began settling into the 10-day 2800 nm leg. The 15 knots enjoyed during the start soon turned into lighter air, proving quite a challenge for the fleet in the first 24 hours. Apart from light and shifty conditions, the TSS (Traffic Separation Scheme) off Newport would also need to be negotiated successfully. This caused a bit of controversy as half the fleet crossed into the exclusion zone and would have to make a trip to the protest room on arrival in Lisbon. On the navigators' minds since the start of this leg was how to successfully navigate the permanent fixture of the Azores high pressure. Basically, there are two calls to make: sail further north (more distance, more breeze), or a bit further south (less distance, less breeze). Team SCA made the bold call of sailing quite far north and managed to reel in the pack, shedding 83 nm off their deficit. Dongfeng Race Team led the pack out of the high, only to end up parked in a windless hole while the rest of the fleet started to hook into the Portuguese trade winds. Team Brunel eventually triumphed on this leg with an elapsed time of 9d 11h 09min 49s. They were followed by MAPFRE and Team Alvimedica in second and third places. Current race leaders, Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing finished fifth, just 30 minutes behind fourth place Dongfeng Race Team. Team SCA finished 6th. With the return of Team Vestas Wind, the scene is set for the tricky coastal legs before the fleet finally finishes in Gothenburg, Sweden. Lisbon Service The Lisbon service period was the last opportunity for the Harken Tech Team to give the fleet a full check and service. Initially scheduled as a partial service, the Tech Team pulled out all the stops, going the extra mile to also service all primary 606 gearboxes and X-boxes. Unlike Newport, where the boats stayed in the water, Lisbon was back to normal with the boats hauled out for service. This meant the Tech Team were back in the scissor lifts and removing winches at 7 meters above ground. Once removed, the winches were taken back to the mobile workshop for full inspection and cleaning before being reinstalled and lubricated. All of this was accomplished in four days, with the fifth and final day left for test sails and final tweaking of the systems. Leg 8 Lisbon to Lorient Leg 8 started in very challenging conditions on the Tagus River. The fleet were met with almost no wind and the effect of a strong incoming tide. MAPRE led for most of the in-port section of the restart only to lose the lead to Team Brunel while exiting the river mouth. Shortly after the exit, the teams saw up to 30 knots of breeze which led to multiple position changes, setting up for what should be a very tactical coastal leg to Lorient, France.

A Springtime trip to Clifton Springs near Port Arlington on Port Philip Bay....I later got caught up in some Mussel nets, but managed to set myself free in the dark...a tad stressful though!...A big learning about using GPS...if you don't zoom in you don't see the detail..Not the same with paper charts as it is all in front of you...

Short trip to Western Port, out of the Port Philip heads and west...About 5 days in all although most of the footage is very boring... Its all a journey to the big stuff...At that point I did not envisage I would enter the MOD Race 2018-'19... But I've done a lot since then and I'm building confidence in my boat (and me)!
