In this episode, Bikinis and Dinghies, we explore Polly's Cove, remove the winter cover/enclosure and remove the framework from the boat. We also buy our very first dinghy! If you like my videos, please SUBSCRIBE to see more, and be sure to give this video a like! In August of 2017 I sold everything and moved aboard Balachandra, a 1986 C&C44 sailboat, then sailed it over 300 nautical miles to Halifax Nova Scotia to spend a cold Canadian winter in the frozen waters of the North Atlantic. Sailing Balachandra is my YouTube sailing vlog inspired by other great channels such as Delos and La Vagabonde, which documents the sailing adventures of myself and the occasional crewmembers(s) as we navigate the east coast of North America and beyond. I also dive into lots of DIY boat projects both above and below decks, and share with you all of the pros and cons of living aboard in a cold climate. The Rock Adventure Cruise 19/20 April 2018. Dolphins, dolphins, dolphins!!! So lucky for this group to experience these magnificent creatures in their natural environment. To top off a fantastic afternoon, there was a beautiful sunset bestowed that evening. One of our guests celebrated his birthday on board. Happy Birthday Luke! The next morning saw the group off snorkelling, warming up in style with the penguin dance. Next up was the island visit led by crew member Patrick who showed off his roly poly skills. The Race for Water catamaran remained in and around Lima in Peru for two months in order to respond to an intense two-phase programme. The first 10-day session enabled numerous operations to be carried out, including hosting representatives and other local figures, a “Plastic Waste to Energy” workshop, as well as school visits. During the second phase over the remaining month and a half, the ACT team, whose objective is to develop plans for plastic waste value chains through waste-to-energy and which is made up of Camille Rollin, Frédéric Sciacca and the local participant from the Peruvian stopover, Jimena Collantes Ortiz, has criss-crossed Peru, participating in conferences and getting involved in a whole series of meetings with those people inspired to take action for a more sustainable Peru. The Race for Water Foundation is dedicated to the preservation of the water and the oceans in particular. Today, seriously under threat from plastic pollution, it is imperative that this essential resource for life is protected. To prevent plastic waste from reaching the waterways and oceans by developing social models and business models that give value to plastic waste and hence encourage its collection. Episode 26 ***SORRY ABOUT THE AUDIO*** As we mentioned before unfortunately we had the new sound muff on and it distorted all our voices. Stupidly we didn't check the footage at the time! Atlantic Crossing Pt 4 - Big ass storm and ripped gennaker. In this weeks episode we border a very big storm luckily our top wind speed was only 35/40 knots, however the boat just close to us was getting 60 knots!!! Once we all recovered from the bad weather and trashed boat, we enjoyed lots of fishing, cooking and relaxing until the next issue we had onboard… we blew our gennaker! Everything was going so well until we heard a huge bang and there she was our beautiful blue sail overboard being dragged along. With a quick recovery we managed to get the sail back onboard with no big drama. To overcome the loss of our sail we decided to cheer ourselves up with Christmas songs and decorations as it was the 1st December. Too much iced coffee and Micheal Buble songs we danced around the boat in excitement. We made the halfway mark!! But not our boat, thankfully! Got a couple of close calls though.... Anyways, after two months spent working non-stop on Polar Seal, it was time to launch her! The problem was… Ryan was very close to forget mentioning that he had removed the anodes before he left for Singapore. I didn’t even know what “anodes” were before he told me that they were not on the boat, and that it was important to have them on before the launch. An anode is a piece of metal whose role is to corrode before other metals onboard that have an actual function. The only function of an anode is to corrode. Ours was corroded to the max, and it was more than time for a new one (so I learned…) Ryan had ordered a new anode, that I picked while he was traveling. I was tasked with making sure that it fitted before launch day. Everything appeared to be OK, but I was so clueless about the whole thing that I totally missed the fact that the anode, in fact, did NOT fit. Ryan came home two days before the boat launch and found out that the anode was the wrong size. That created a bit of a situation. Magnus, who has been saving our butts many times at this point, saved us once again by making the holes in the anode big enough for it to fit. We placed it back the day before splashday, and prayed the sikaflex that holds it in place had enough time to cure. The launch itself went fast and was very efficient, but the anode got us nervous. That said, Ryan is like a kid when the big truck and the big crane come to lift the big boat. Big toys for a big kid! Having the boat in the water is a relief. The anode did not leak, but the day wasn't over. We still had to park Polar Seal in her slip! The wind had picked up quite a bit, making the job a lot more challenging than we had wished. Polar Seal almost crashed against another boat at the first attempt. Ryan took a little breather out the marina and came to successfully park Polar Seal at the second attempt. Being back in the water feels AMAZING! We now have a lot more work (surpriiiise!) ahead of us to put Polar Seal back in shape before we leave Stockholm at the end of May. I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel the world. I make vlogs sharing my ups and downs, and my adventures in vans, on motorbikes, and on sailboats. - Who is Champ? Champ is my handsome 14-year-old Labrador, who travelled almost everywhere with me for his whole life. He loves chin scratches, fetching sticks, and scarfing down cheeseburgers and pizza. - What camera equipment do you use? I use a Panasonic FZ2500, a DJI Mavic Pro, a Rode video micro with Deadcat, a Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, as well as DIY tripods and lights. - What are your vehicles? I drove a 1992 Dodge Ram B350 camper van all over North America for about two years. Travelling by motorcycle made for some unique trips. I explored the Canadian Maritimes (and deserts and backroads all over the continent) on a 2002 Kawasaki KL250 Super Sherpa dual sport bike, and also rode my 1999 Yamaha V-Star XVS1100 cruiser with a Champion Escort sidecar across my home country twice. From land to water travels: I currently live and work on a 1979 Wharram Oro 47 catamaran. - What are your plans with the boat? I will fix it up, run it on nothing but green electric power, and sail off into the sunset. Stay tuned for the growing build and the adventures to come! - How do you find all these cool places we see in the videos? To gain access to my complete research and the world traveller’s map I curate during my explorations off the beaten path, you need to hit me up on Patreon. Here are a few websites I frequent: https://freecampsites.net/, https://www.campendium.com/, http://www.atlasobscura.com/, https://www.couchsurfing.com/ - How do you afford your lifestyle? I live and travel economical by using free camping and mooring, cooking my own meals, thoroughly researching products and how-to’s online, practicing a DIY approach, and being as efficient as possible with my resources. I've struggled financially for most of my life, and although I'm blessed with helpful friends and family as well as being able-bodied, white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to pursue your passion. So, I learned that you DO need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, and a traditional career but that it IS possible, worth it, and the only lifestyle that makes me happy. I make my income almost entirely by creating content for YouTube, but it's a tight budget. Ad revenue, business sponsors, affiliate links, Patreon, Paypal donations, and merchandise sales bring in about as much as a part-time job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough, I go back to regular work such as photography, videography or construction, but that takes the focus away from my own projects. - How does your dog fit into this lifestyle? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with Champ anyways, since we enjoy similar things, like eating food and being outdoors. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities. - How do you make it work as a digital nomad? My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster. - Why don't you have more subscribers? My channel isn't that old, and my travels, plans and projects are pretty various, which makes my content very versatile within the YouTube vlogging universe – and maybe it doesn’t fit a specific niche. If you enjoy how I tell stories, please feel free to share my
