In this weeks episode, we go full blown "How To." This is all about how to make repairs to solid wooden items such as Booms, Masts, and Bulkheads. In our case, we found a small section of our wooden mizzen boom that had a soft spot on it. In this video, we will show how to determine if a repair is needed. How to remove the bad/rotted material. How to cut a template before using expensive wood. How to purchase exotic hardwood from a specialty hardwood store. How to cut the hardwood and make the correct angles for a scarf joint. How to install the new piece of wood with epoxy. How to mix sawdust in epoxy for color matching. How to sand and shape the final material. Learn how to repair your own boom, mast or bulkhead. These are skills that can be used to fix almost any good hardwood project including furniture. If you have searched in boat repair forums, seek no further, I may have run across some of the repairs you need to do. I am not an expert but have gained quite a bit of knowledge in refitting my own boats as well as the curiosity to research the best way (for me) to go about making my own repairs that save money but remain strong and long-lasting. As always things are not that easy as they seems, first I hand sand down the bow thruster hole and then I sand down the engine leg and the edges of the rudder. I thought the keel was a easy job but I was wrong, it is almost impossible to sand down with the sander so I get my old 600W Bosch grinder, 5 grinding discs later I reach my goal and I can then apply some rust converter as the first part in the process. IMPORTANT : Do not get the rust converter on the skin !!

We check into Fethiye, Turkey and cruise around the Gocek area. These are some of the best cruising grounds in the world. The water is warming up and we are able to swim and enjoy the beautiful water and mountains. Sophia gets to wakeboard behind the dinghy and Alex makes friends with a donkey.

We visit the beaches, turtle river and mud baths of Dalyan Turkey. Our Dinghy is confiscated by the police! No worries, we still have a great time enjoying the area.

The toilet is the least of our worries. We have some major problems to fix and some spectacular cruising grounds to explore! Marmaris in Turkey was the spot to fix Nikau up, meet new friends and see some of the best cruising ground in the world. We are the Robbins family sailing on our boat named Nikau. We are a family of 5. Our 3 kids are doing NZ correspondence school on board. They are growing to love it! What's not to love about 3 hours of school a day and then a different playground for the afternoon every day! We've traveled from New Zealand to Sardinia in Italy to pick up our boat and we plan over a few seasons to sail her back to New Zealand. We hope you enjoy following us on our adventures! It was a bank holiday weekend and some members of the cruising fleet at MYC decided to have a cruise to the marina at Conyer Creek. Conyer creek is little more than a small muddy stream and it completely dries out at low tide and yet we all made it there and had a great time... well nearly everyone did. The journey got much more complicated for one yacht when its propeller fell off!!! I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities. - How do you make it work as a digital nomad? My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.

Fourth week at sea, sailing from Costa Rica to Hawaii and landfall is getting closer and closer. We enjoy life at sea, the weather is nice and we call home from the satellit phone. Then as if it would never happen we see land again :) We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat RAN, a custom built Beason 40 in aluminium, untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter and started to sail south along the coast of Europe. Well that was a fun week! Started off with a great sail to Dominica, we didn’t’ have much wind at the start but it picked up and we speed over to Island! Unfortunately as soon as we anchored in Dominica we were hassled by a lot of boat boys which is completely understandable, they were just wanting to make some money for their families but we decided to pick up anchor and head to Iles Des Saintes Islands which are located South of Guadeloupe. Our favourite island was Ilet a Cabrit (Goat Island), habited by goats, hermit the crab, cats, pelicans and chickens! So much fun, to finish off a great day we enjoyed a good old Kiwiana BBQ to finish off the day. Shout out to our Patrons Sam and Greg for all your support!
