Spectacular conditions for the opening day of the ROLEX TP52 World Championship in Cascais, Portugal. Twice World Champions, Azzurra (ITA) won the first race in 17-20kts of NW’ly breeze and surfing waves. The breeze picked up for the second race with the NW’ly wind gusting to over 20kts to allow some spectacular downwind surfing conditions. Quantum Racing (USA) won the second race and so lead the title charge but only on countback with Azzurra, which finished second.

It’s not unfamiliar for anyone working in the yachting industry to run into the question of what generator size is required on a particular boat. An answer will depend on a few variables discussed by TMC President, Phillip Berman, here.

This week we make a plan on where to spend New Year 2018 and we'd heard good things about the French island of Martinique. Marin, the town at the South of the island is a sailing mecca and a great place to fix some boat issues so we decided to head there and check it out. Marin is about 90 miles from Bequia which takes us around 14 hours so we knew we'd have to stop off somewhere to ensure we don't arrive at night. It's never a good idea to arrive at an unknown harbour in the dark! We opted for a cheeky night in Marigot Bay, St Lucia without clearing customs and an early start the next morning to find the best anchorage in the huge natural harbour of Marin. St Lucia and Martinique are two of the most Easterly islands in the Caribbean and with the trade winds coming from the North East, we have to pinch upwind as much as we can - not the easiest thing to do in a catamaran! It's actually not too bad, we can go pretty fast at 50 degrees to the wind. The wind and swell often increases as you come out from the lee of the land at the top of an island so be prepared for it and reef down before you get there. We got some decent winds as we sail North and Hayley learned why you should always check you have turns on a winch before opening a clutch so we had the first aid kit out, luckily we'd kept it out because then I was attacked by a killer hornet, those blighters are huge in the Caribbean. It's only 5 hours or so From St Lucia to Martinique so we could spend some time finding the best anchorage. Ideally, we want a short dinghy ride ashore (I'm expecting my vision may well be a bit worse for wear on later in the evening) and a nice calm and quiet spot for us and our friends boats. As you all know, Hayley is our top helms woman so she skill fully navigated her way into the harbour, around a load of yachts on moorings looking for the dream spot... I remember Hayley saying to me "Dave, I'm full throttle but we aren't moving" "ALL STOP Hayley! We're on a reef." So I get in to assess the situation and right enough, we're in about 3 feet of water. Good effort babe!;) Our options: 1: Stay where we are and wait for a rising tide 2: Use our anchor and pull ourselves off As I wasn't even sure what state of tide we were at, we decided on option 2 plus it's embarrassing when all the boats around us knew we were on the reef!! A French guy helped us from his dinghy and set our anchor about 30m ahead in the sand and we pulled the boat off to assess the damage. I knew it wasn't going to be pretty as our keel dragged across the rocks. I think we got lucky and only lost a few small patches of anti foul and gel coat but these do need repair. The chandlers had a great 2 part product that cures in the water and sticks like shit on a blanket, even underwater. After spending many years working underwater, I think this is a job I should be able to do well and I'm pretty proud of my handy work. After a day like this, there's only one thing we can do... SOLD! Congratulations and safe travels to the new owners. Lady Di is the ground-breaking hull number one that launched the Krogen 39 phenomenon. She was delivered in 1998, wow, twenty years ago! You can’t judge a book by its’ cover and the same follows for Lady Di, (except her cover and all of the pages inside look much newer looking than her model year proclaims). Economical, efficient and practical, Lady Di is a very appealing choice for first time trawler owners or for sailors who are ready to make the trawler transition and are looking for the room and space more equivalent to accommodations found in a 45’ sailboat. Lady Di was purchased in 2017 by her third owner who attended to all of the survey recommendations and has had her systems and machinery all serviced for cruising. With the survey projects completed (including a new main engine shaft, bottom paint, propeller tuning, etc.) they have recently settled in to enjoy her – only to realize that the boat they bought may be ideal for two people; but when their grandkids come aboard they are short on sleeping accommodations. For this reason alone, they have decided to sell Lady Di and are already looking to purchase a similar quality trawler when they find one a bit larger and with a true second stateroom. Designed by Jim Krogen (senior) to be an offshore, ocean crossing livable trawler for two people, the Krogen 39 has exceeded that goal. She is both compact (for marina slips) and large (spacious interior volume including standing headroom in the front of the engine room) at the same time. Easy to dock with her refined hull shape including wine glass transom and fitted with a bow thruster this is a single engine trawler that is easy to handle. Her exterior; swim platform, covered cockpit, side decks, foredeck, boat deck and flybridge provides a variety of outdoor living space. From the beginning, the systems on Lady Di have been purposely minimal. She is a back-to-basics boat that includes the essentials favored by three owners now. Simple, understated, exceptional. The Krogen 39 is a very good secret that is still not as well-known as she should be. Lady Di has been looked after with regular and caring maintenance, she is as dependable as she is reliable. The Kadey-Krogen line is very popular and celebrated for their seakeeping abilities. The brand is famous for their gorgeous finish: glistening gelcoat, sparkling stainless and beautiful teak timber throughout. Lady Di is the equal in elegance to her larger siblings all hand built by Asia Harbor Yacht Builders in Taiwan. The Krogen 39 is no longer in production, the costs to build them became to high and so there are only about 50 hulls sailing the seven seas. Originally named “Number One”, she was the cover story and feature article in the Winter 1998/1999 PassageMaker magazine that announced her arrival and letting the world in on this ‘secret’. Bill Parlatore who wrote that piece had an interesting observation, “The Krogen 39 is a trawler designed for KISS passage making. Keep things simple. If you can resist becoming best friends with your local marine store when you outfit the boat, and instead go slowly during the outfitting process, you will be one happy couple with an exceedingly happy boat.” A true full displacement, long range trawler, she is an ideal cruising platform for an adventurous couple. During her career, Lady Di has covered the US west coast down south to Mexico and up north to Alaska. She has been on the San Francisco Bay for the past few years and now resides in Vallejo, CA home of the California Maritime Academy. Provisioned and topped off with fuel she is a few short miles away from clearing the Golden Gate with a virtually unlimited itinerary of blue water to explore.
