Denied permission to enter port, stopped from landing our dinghy on a remote beach on the first day of lockdown in Spain. The Spanish authorities moved quickly, so quickly that it caught a lot of people out including us. After having spent a couple of weeks at anchored we venture ashore for a walk on a sunny weekend there are a few people out walking dogs and running but there is also a police man who tells everyone they must return home. Lockdown has started. We realise in a state of lockdown we will be short on food, water and gas for cooking so must find a way to restock. This was not how we thought our sailing season would start this year! Corona virus has taken hold in Spain and extreme measures have been brought in everywhere. Marina offices are unmanned and it's only when we arrive at a marina entrance that someone answers the VHF to tell us we can't land and must leave. It's a world crisis and in some ways we feel lucky to be out at anchor in our own boat / isolation ward! But there are real issues in getting essential supplies. This is a special extra episode of Sailing Fair Isle all filmed in the last 4 days to show the situation as it stands right now. How does that saying go? "When in Rome, do like the Romans do". So when in the Med, Med Mooring comes to mind hey? We try our hand at this for the first time, and YAY, success! Apparently you must allow for at least 2 hours to properly moor, so don't hurry things, suss out the surroundings and take your time. To sum up, this maneuver, known as “Med mooring”, consists of anchoring close to the shoreline, and after backing down on the anchor, securing one or more mooring lines from the stern of the boat to a fixed point ashore. In this episode our day sailing north makes a challenging turn: instead of the usual 8 knots winds and 1-2 foot seas....we run into several hours of 20 knot winds with gusts to 25+ and seas in the 4-5 foot range coming every few seconds...the result of strong winds across a 35-mile fetch of very shallow waters. Southern California oil rig diving 8 miles off the coast of Long Beach, California. Three dives on three rigs: Eureka, Elley and Ellen. Clusters of plumose anemones, sponge covered scallops, feather duster worms, nudibranchs and brightly colored Corynactis. A divers delight. Not an easy dive. Open ocean swells provide crazy currents and the bottom is well past recreational dive limits. Due to the depth the boat is "live" not anchored, requiring swims to and from the dive boat.
