When Luke Marsh joined GJW Direct to head up their Marketing Department he had no experience in sailing. In fact he had a phobia of water. Step by step he overcame his fear, and first gained his RYA Powerboat Level 2 qualification, then learned to paddleboard, and in the summer of 2024 took a sailing course, gaining his RYA Dinghy Level 1 and 2 Qualifications. Kevin Whitcraft's Team Vayu TH 72 and Ray Roberts' Team Hollywood swapped spots today in the two races held in Class Zero of the 36th sailing of the Phuket King's Cup with Team Vayu TH 72 winning the first race, a windward-leeward, and Team Hollywood the second, an island course. Ex-Australian Olympian Steve McConaghy's Aftershock finished third in both races in the three-boat class. Principal Race Officer Simon James staged the same start sequence as day one with six rolling starts to begin racing: first off was IRC Zero, followed by the Premier Class, and then IRC 1, and IRC 2. The Bareboat, Cruising and Classic classes all started together and then the Multihull fleet was the last to cross the start line. On Tuesday 3rd December, leaders Charlie Dalin on MACIF Santé Prévoyance and Sébastien Simon on Groupe Dubreuil have managed to make the best of the light winds ahead of tomorrow's storm in the Vendée Globe, while Yoann Richomme on PAPREC-ARKEA fell into light winds as he heads north to position himself for the approaching low pressure system. We take a look at the tracker and options for routing using PredictWind, to see what the options are for the fleet to make the best use of the wind, while also avoiding the strongest winds, which could top 50 knots at times and be combined with huge seas. In February 2020 we moved aboard our new floating home having purchased her only 6 months before sight unseen and proceeded to live in a trawler harbour for 2 years. Her previous owner lived on the hard stand for 10 years, so Innerbloom was set up for full time living - not cruising. We spent the next 2 years upgrading vital systems and electrics, treating rust and trying to learn as much as we could about sailing and sailboats whilst working full time. Josh worked at a sugar mill as an Electrician and instrumentation technician and Phoebe worked an online business and as a Librarian’s Assistant. In March of 2023 we set sail from our home port of Ballina, NSW, to embark on our first season of cruising up the East Coast of Queensland having only sailed Innerbloom a handful of times. It sounded insane…and it was! But we’re now at the tail end of our first season of sailing with no plans of stopping any time soon! We strive for transparency on our channel which means that we quite literally share all of the ebbs and floods of our novice sailing journey. Posso lasciare il frigorifero acceso quando lascio la barca in porto? La risposta è sì, ma con le dovute precauzioni. In questa puntata di "Nautica in pillole", scopriamo insieme come fare! Se sei un navigatore esperto o possiedi una barca da tempo, probabilmente conosci già la risposta. Tuttavia, è importante ricordare che la maggior parte dei frigoriferi delle barche funziona a 12 volt, consumando energia dalle batterie. Per questo, è fondamentale fare attenzione a non scaricare troppo la batteria, rischiando di rimanere senza energia per accendere i motori, soprattutto se l'impianto non è progettato adeguatamente. Un impianto ben fatto dovrebbe prevedere batterie separate: una dedicata ai servizi, magari una specifica per il frigorifero, e altre per i motori. Tramite gli staccabatterie, che possono essere manuali o elettromagnetici, è possibile gestire l'alimentazione delle varie linee di energia della barca. A bordo di una Bénéteau Gran Turismo 32, ad esempio, troviamo gli staccabatterie sotto il gradino d’ingresso della cabina. Qui ci sono due staccabatterie rossi per separare e isolare il positivo delle batterie, e uno cumulativo per la linea negativa. Questo sistema consente di controllare se i motori o gli accessori consumano energia, evitando inutili scariche. Come nelle auto, i motori della barca, una volta accesi, generano energia per ricaricare le batterie. Inoltre, molte barche, come questa, sono dotate di un caricabatterie collegato a una presa a terra tramite un cavo elettrico. Questo sistema trasforma la corrente alternata a 220 volt in corrente continua a 12 volt per ricaricare le batterie. Per sicurezza, l’impianto deve includere un magnetotermico (un salvavita, come quello di casa) per proteggere il sistema dalla corrente di terra. Questo dispositivo, posizionato nel gavone di poppa, assicura che l’energia della banchina venga correttamente trasferita al caricabatterie. Quando lasci il frigorifero acceso, è consigliabile mantenere attivo solo lo staccabatterie degli accessori, scollegando quelli dei motori. Se hai una batteria dedicata al frigorifero, ancora meglio. Se invece parti per un lungo periodo e non hai bisogno di lasciare il frigorifero acceso, puoi tranquillamente spegnere tutti gli staccabatterie. Il caricabatterie continuerà a funzionare e ricaricare le batterie tramite la presa a terra.
