We design and create a custom pullout settee sofa-bed for our forward cabin. Jessie creates custom cushions to use with the settee-bed. We are Shawn, Jessie, Mojo and Voodoo. We started our Youtube channel, Big Easy Sailing, to document our journey on our 1972 Gulfstar 36 sailboat. We've been together for 20 years and moved everywhere from our hometown of New Orleans to Alaska to Denver to Florida. Now our home will travel with us as we travel across beautiful blue waters. Products in this video: Tea Kettle - https://sailingsoulianis.com/products-we-love/bodum-electric-tea-kettle Manual Food Processor - https://sailingsoulianis.com/products-we-love/zyliss-manual-food-processor We bought the boat, daysailed the boat, and have taken our first overnight trip to Milwaukee. Now we’re planning to sail up and down the west coast of Michigan, during which we want to spend some time at anchor. This multi-week trip will serve as our shakedown sail for leaving our home port of Racine, saying goodbye to Lake Michigan and heading south. Our Tartan 37, though liveaboard capable, was not liveaboard ready when we bought her. The previous owners used her for summer sailing, then tucked her away for the cold months. Since buying the boat, we’ve kept her in a slip at West Shore Marine (the slip was already paid up through the season) which has proved wonderfully convenient for moving aboard and getting to know the boat. But, a sailboat in a slip is more floating apartment than anything else. We have a lot of work to do to prepare the boat for leaving the dock. In this video we start to tick off a handful items on our looooong cruising prep list. The jobs are arguably small, but hey, we have to start somewhere. This episode took us a bit longer than usual to get out… Hoping now to be back on our bi-weekly schedule. ;) Hope you enjoy! Lauren & Kirk P.S. We’ve launched a Patreon page! This one's a bit of a downer. During a heavy rain, our Porta-Bote sunk! We also try fiberglassing over our toe rail and fail miserably on the first try. But in the end, we found the right solution. Tropical rainstorms that go on for days are no fun, so we hid in one of the prettiest marinas in Malaysia to escape, but the rain kept coming and the mould kept growing... Then the sun came up and we had some close encounters with containers in the Singapore shipping lanes! 👍 If you enjoyed this video, please LIKE, COMMENT, SHARE & SUBSCRIBE,. Your feedback gets us noticed by YouTube and helps people discover us. So thank you. This is our 100th episode since the first vlog after our refit, published on 9 May 2015. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_TOGsvYL31U&t=912s Back then Jamie was tackling the usual boat chores, Liz wasn't catching any fish, Millie was thinner and the weather was still hot. If you watch some of our earlier output you'll understand why we're embarrassed about the rudimentary editing, video and sound quality. And we hope you will have noticed the improvements we have been making. The really exciting thing has been to watch our sailing channel grow, and to read the increasingly informed and entertaining comments. We have a fantastic community of subscribers and followers on Youtube and social media, and the most generous group of individuals who support us on PATREON and through the RUM FUND. Not only has this fantastic generosity enabled us to upgrade and add to our camera equipment, but we have bought better laptops and sound gear, and now have access to some of the best editing software available. Without your encouragement we would not be producing such regular videos or be able to continue to push and stretch our imaginations, both in terms of creativity and sailing to new destinations. After spending a couple of months heads down in sewing and fiberglass work while living in Isla Mujeres, Mexico, we both decided it was time to take a break from the darker side of cruising to remind ourselves about the rewards of working our butts off in a new country. So we took a long weekend to explore Merida, the cultural center of the Yucatan while Desiree's mom visited us to celebrate her birthday. In this episode we finally get to swim in a Cenote, which we've been looking forward to for years! Cenotes are (mostly) fresh-water underground caves, which in many cases actually link up to form the largest underwater cave system in the world (215 miles long!). Cenote is the mayan word for “sacred well”. The Mayans built complex structures to tap into these large quantities of fresh water to sustain their civilizations. They also used some cenotes as sacrificial burials or as punishment for wrong-doing. It’s beyond words to explain the blue, clear, fresh feeling of diving into one of these hidden gems! There are over 6,000 cenotes in the Yucatan- some are small holes in farmers' backyards, some are monetized by huge corporations that sport zip lines and fancy underwater lighting, some are local joints for kids and families to spend their dia de descanso (day off) cooling down, and some are abandoned and overgrown holes in the jungle. Our first Cenote (Cuzama) is still our favorite Cenote of all time. Because it's so hard to get to, it's still relatively untouched. We had it almost 100% to ourselves! Did you like this video? We take a trip to Ft. Lauderdale Florida to get some fresh brewed coffee at Bean to Brew. Oh, and we also go sailing on a 46' Leopard catamaran in the ICW with Scott and Holly from Sailing the Space Between. We see a mega yacht get drug through some tight quarters while we were at dock. Unfortunately, the seas picked up and were going to make for an unpleasant sail so we didn't actually get to hoist any sails. But we did get to eat tacos and chat with our new friends. After we docked and said our goodbyes it was back to working on Saoirse. We had to remove all of the old hardware clinging on to the piece of boat that came with them, before the no-see-ums ate us alive. Then we celebrated our love with a delicious meal and some bubbly.
