What happens at a mark rounding? Who has right of way? This rule applies when the boats enter an imaginary circle 70-metres from the mark. With the race underway, both boats have to go around marks at the top and bottom of the course, when the boats choose opposite marks it's plain sailing. But it gets slightly more complicated when they're neck and neck and choose the same mark. In this case, blue is the clear leader, yellow is a little way behind, there's no overlap, so no real problem. Blue has the right of way and yellow has to allow blue to go around the mark unobstructed. But let's hit the rewind the button, and imagine that the competition was a lot closer, and yellow has its bow across blue's stern. What happens when you break the rules? The Penalty Rule 🚨 #KnowTheGame Basically, the penalty in the America’s Cup, including when a boat is OCS, is to slow down and get two boat lengths behind the other boat, which means put one boat length of water between the two boats. However, if a boat sails out of bounds or fouls a boat on a different leg of the course, the penalty is to slow down until the umpires decide the boat has lost two boat lengths in the race relative to the other boat. To protest, the skippers will hit their “protest button.” There will be umpires following the boats on the racecourse and umpires sitting in a booth on shore. Umpires in the booth have video and graphic views of the boats, and can replay situations before making their decisions, if needed. The umpires in the booth administer the penalties by turning on a boat’s penalty light. When the umpires decide the boat has fulfilled its penalty, they will turn off the penalty light.
