Danger at Portland Road, Bliss at Forbes Island (Ep.92)

This episode begins with me sailing away from the Lockhart River in almost no wind, creeping along and hoping to reach Portland Road before sunset. Eventually the breeze arrives — all the way up to 23 knots on the beam — and ARGO lights up, pushing past 7 knots as I tick over a big milestone: 5,000 nautical miles sailed since buying the boat. Getting into Portland Road comes with a very real reminder of where I’m cruising. As I return to ARGO in the tender, I spot a large crocodile nearby. It’s incredible how vulnerable you feel in an inflatable tender when you lose sight of a croc… especially when the water is so shallow you have to row the first 30 metres before you can start the outboard. Later that night, I shine a light under the hull and see sharks prowling beneath the boat, adding to the wild atmosphere of Far North Queensland. My next stop is Forbes Island — a remote, rarely visited paradise that’s not easy to reach. But the reward is worth every mile: a white sandy beach, a few palm trees, and turquoise water that looks unreal. It’s the kind of place that reminds you exactly why living aboard a boat is worth the effort. A perfect spot to enjoy a cold beer and watch the sun go down.
