Six 32m trimarans racing solo around the world, it's never been done before. In fact, to date only four people have ever completed a solo lap of the planet in a multihull. The Arkea Ultime Challenge Brest is an extraordinary race between six exceptional sailors aboard a fleet of incredible machines, most of them fully foiling. The race started on 7 January 2024 and is expected to take between 40-50 days for the front runners. How do we prepare for an offshore passage? In this episode we go through our thoughts on weather and food prep to make our lives easier at sea. After getting knocked around by a storm in the Chesapeake we get outta dodge by pulling into an anchorage, but the damage is already done. With a damages railing, pole, and the crew's nerves a little rattled we pull into Cobbs Marina in Virginia to prepare for the next passage. After inspecting the rigging and bending back our railing as best as possible Kazza prepares her famous pulled pork recipe to keep the crew morale up for the next leg of the journey around Cape Hatteras! More Videos at: http://www.AmbientRealLife.com It was only with extreme luck that we left St Maarten and St Barth's just early enough this season to escape the wrath of what the islands expected to be a 30-40knot tropical storm, but turned into Hurricane Gonzalo just as it moved over St Barth's this past week... Our hearts and deepest condolences go out to families and friends of those that lost their lives, and the 30+ boats lost or sunk in this tragic sudden shift of weather... we wish only the best, and a speedy recovery for all those who suffered losses in this storm. The footage in the video was filmed in September 2014, about 2-3 weeks before Hurricane Gonzalo struck.. we had just left St Maarten very late in the season, and knew there was a high risk in being that far north at the time, but we headed for St Barth's on an intermediate stopover to St Kitt's on our way South to Grenada for the rest of the Hurricane season. Columbier Beach was absolutely spectacular, and of course being this late in the season we had it entirely to ourselves! We managed to get some nice drone footage from 'Sophisticated Lady' with our new "Mariner" Waterproof Drone, and you'll see that in the video. Living off the sea, collecting our own food, and fixing your own boat is a ton of work! Being at a dock is a true luxury for us and we decide to take full advantage by going ashore at low tide to harvest mussels on our own for a cook-off competition. It turns out this is a huge amount of work and takes us two days to get them cleaned and prepped. After our feast we get a visit from our neighbors, which happen to be a pair of Bald Eagle! After watching them fight over a fish we see one fall into the water and we're quick on the scene to get some awesome footage of a Bald Eagle doing the breast stroke! Our washing machine starts making a terrible noise and smoke pours out so Brian tears it into pieces troubleshooting. Looks like we'll be hand washing clothes for a while. Then it's time to explore the little town of Port Clyde where we buy lobster for $5.00 a piece and whip up a gigantic chilled lobster salad. The Smart Cat S280 starts to fulfill a gap in the cruising catamaran market that needed to be filled. Before today, "small and affordable" could never enter the same sentence as "cruising catamaran," with most cruising catamarans starting at half a million dollars or more. I've been saying that the catamaran market in general is moving towards a "bigger is better" mentality and that's definitely not the always the case. I've been wanting smaller and more affordable cats to go on the new boat market for a long time now, and the Smart Cat S280, although definitely not perfect, is a breath of fresh air in that regard. She's small, relatively affordable with a price tag of $149,900, and offers a ton of accommodation for a 28 foot boat. She's built to be a daysailer, weekended or light coastal cruiser, and I think she would be a fun boat for those purposes. I'd love to see more manufacturers start to compete in this niche. Welcome to our shop, and our 1938 Herreshoff Marlin. Today I'll show you an easy do it yourself way to paint your boat's topsides. Let's start by protecting the shearstrake and taping the edge. If the surface is dirty, take a tack rag and wipe it down so the tape will stick well. Let me show you a trick for taping. Tape the first 4-6 inches and make sure it's stuck well. Then get 4-6 feet away and you'll have a lot more control over how fair you can make the curve. You'll be very happy with the results. Once you've taped, go back and make sure the tape is stuck well. Once you have both the waterline and the shear taped, let's start preparing the surface. I'll be sanding the whole topsides with my six inch DA sander, using 320 grit paper. Take your time. You're just smoothing out the surface for the final paint, not fairing. Let the tool do the work, and change your paper often. Since I can't sand right up to the taped edge with the DA, I'll hand sand the final edge. Okay, the hull surface is sanded with 320 grit. I'll pull off the tape. This tape will have nicks in it and dust on it, so we don't want to use the same tape for painting. Before I apply new tape, I'll tack rag the whole topside. I've retaped the shear and the waterline. The surface is prepped and ready for paint. I'll be using foam brushes and a one part polyurethane paint. Make sure you read the manufacturer's instructions so you do all the proper preparation of the surface and thinning of the paint. I would not start painting too late in the day, just to prevent the moisture buildup that might happen overnight. Also do not paint in the full sun. It would be difficult to get the paint to flow properly. If you can paint undercover, I think you'll get better results. When you apply the paint take your time; don't try to cover too big an area at once. I apply the paint perpendicular to the shear, and then brush out in the direction of the shear; it seems to give me better results. With the painting complete, I'll pull the tape. Be careful not to have the tape fall on the painted topsides. There she is, looking nice. We just need to paint her bottom and she's ready for another summer of fun!
