This is the conclusion of an epic 11-day sailing adventure cruising the Pacific coast, SF Bay Area and the Sacramento Delta aboard my West Wight Potter 19, with not a single night in a marina. Transcript... [Coming up...] and blew bloody snot. And before I knew it, I was dragging anchor over to the rocks. This is the pathetic little piece of plastic that connects the auto tiller to the tiller. Just outside the gate, I see thousands and thousands of seabirds. I've had it with that clunking noise coming from the rudder and so resolve to remedy it now whilst underway. Yay, some peaceful sailing. Just thought I heard some chickens clucking. The bearing seen here is completely loose in its housing. Back to hand steering now with a full set of canvas which we carry on a following sea all the way back to Santa Cruz. When sailing out under the Golden Gate and turning south, two of the most important considerations are wind and tide. On account of these considerations, I had intended to spend an extra day at anchor here, but fate and happen stance were to have none of it. I had contemplated going ashore, but it's a good job I didn't. After a quiet night sailing at anchor, the wind got up and blew bloody snot. And before I knew it, I was dragging anchor over to the rocks. All of a sudden, I went from a relaxing day at anchor to all hands on deck. The tangled mess of anchor, chain, road, seaweed, and mud was manhandled onto the for deck. Hurriedly, I left what was only moments ago a peaceful anchorage. I was in no mood to reset the anchor in high winds and so put to sea. I resolved to move closer to the gate in order to catch the early tide in the morning. That looks peaceful enough, but now I've got another problem. This time I've broken my autopilot. This is the pathetic little piece of plastic that connects the auto tiller to the tiller. Are we having fun yet? I spent the next half an hour affecting a repair. There it is. The fog's coming. I need to decide what time to leave in the morning. So, I go onto Noah's website and check the tides and currents. It shows slack at 7:46 a.m. I'm a bit early leaving, but conditions look calm, so I go, passing the north tower. Just outside the gate, I see thousands and thousands of seabirds. I'm doing 7.3 knots on the way out. I think I might be a little early. I hear a clunking noise. I've had it with that clunking noise coming from the rudder and so resolve to remedy it now whilst underway. Yay! Some peaceful sailing. Just thought I heard some chickens clucking. That's weird. The dock at Half Moon Bay welcomes me and Jonah. There's time for a late lunch and I march off to my favorite eatery. Ah, Barbara's fish trap. It really does not get any better than this. Seriously. At anchor now. And the wind is really starting to howl. I may be getting close to home, but this is no time to be letting one's guard down. More accidents happen coming down off the mountain. The autopilot is sounding very unwell. Back to hand steering now with a full set of canvas which we carry on a following sea all the way back to Santa Cruz. I'm back in port now and taking the autopilot to pieces. is what a complete and utter mess. This is the assortment of broken piece parts, most of which were found inside the unit, loose. The bearing seen here is completely loose in its housing. If your ST2000 Plus is doing this, save yourself some time. Don't bother trying to fix it. Thanks Raymarine for not providing spares for the drivetrain. After 6 and 1/2 years, the batteries buggered, which I'm told is a good innings. After careful measurement, I order a new battery, a larger one, which I hope will fit and provide me with additional capacity. I place my order, but what ensues is the most ridiculous debacle with UPS I've ever experienced. What arrives is a battery, but it is horribly deformed. The keel trunk needs attention, too. But I guess I'll save that moaning for another episode. Are we having fun yet? Of course we are.

Preventing Tether Hook Failure Understanding the Risk The safety harness tether is a vital piece of personal protective equipment (PPE) designed to safeguard individuals working at height or in hazardous environments. However, even the most robust tether can be compromised if not used correctly or maintained properly. One critical factor that can significantly reduce the strength of a tether is lateral loading on the tether hook. Lateral loading occurs when the force applied to the hook is not directly in line with the tether's axis. This can happen when the hook becomes entangled with deck fittings, equipment, or other obstructions. When subjected to lateral forces, the hook can deform or even fail, leading to a catastrophic loss of the tether's integrity and potentially putting the wearer at risk of serious injury or death. The Importance of Proper Anchoring To prevent the strength of a safety harness tether from becoming compromised due to lateral loading, the method used to anchor the end of the tether to the vessel must be carefully considered. The primary objective is to ensure that the tether hook cannot become entangled with any deck fittings or other equipment. * Avoid Obstructions: * Clear the Path: Route the tether and hook away from any potential obstructions, such as cleats, winches, or other equipment that could cause entanglement. * Use Protective Covers: If obstructions cannot be avoided, consider using protective covers or sleeves to minimize the risk of the hook snagging. * Regular Inspection and Maintenance: * Inspect the Tether and Hook: Regularly check the tether for signs of wear, damage, or deterioration. Pay close attention to the hook for any signs of deformation or bending. * Replace Damaged Equipment: If any damage is found, replace the affected component immediately. Do not attempt to repair damaged equipment. * Proper Tether Attachment: * Secure the Hook: Ensure that the hook is securely clipped to the anchor point, with no slack in the tether. * Avoid Twisting: Prevent twisting of the tether, as this can weaken the fibers and reduce the overall strength. Additional Safety Tips: * Training and Education: All personnel who use safety harnesses should receive proper training on their correct use, inspection, and maintenance. * Emergency Procedures: Develop and implement emergency procedures for rescuing individuals who may become incapacitated while using a safety harness. * Regular Safety Audits: Conduct regular safety audits to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety regulations. By following these guidelines and prioritizing safety, you can significantly reduce the risk of tether hook failure and protect yourself and your crew from potential harm. Remember, a strong and reliable safety harness tether is an essential component of a comprehensive safety program. Good guys. IN THIS VIDEO: During our passage to Bermuda, we discovered more damage to our Code Zero sail after the unfurling incident. Ann quickly patched up the two small holes with her amazing sewing skills, allowing us to unfurl and refurl the sail smoothly. This sail has been our trusty companion for downwind conditions, and losing it would have been a huge setback. With our crew gone, we took a moment to reflect on how much of a blessing they've been, especially after our disastrous first attempt almost a year ago, sailing from Cape Town to Saint Helena. We’ve learned the importance of a good mix of skills, professionalism, and a positive attitude for future crew selections. After arriving in Saint Martin ahead of the holidays, we indulged in some relaxation and cultural exploration. We anchored near Balaou, a fantastic floating bar, and unexpectedly found ourselves amidst a lively boat rally with over 50 boats blasting music. A few days later, we were in the middle of a dazzling Christmas boat parade, and the next night, Grand Case hosted a charming Christmas parade on the main street. Our great friend Rob joined us during this time, and we enjoyed snorkeling at Rocher Creole, the local snorkeling and diving hotspot. Rob brought his pole spear and caught two lionfish, which we promptly cooked and devoured. With our Code Zero fixed, we made a stop in Marigot to refuel before heading to St. Barths for an unforgettable New Year’s Eve! GTFOplan #92: The Bermuda Triangle or Just a Really Rough Passage? https://youtu.be/YlzyyxydEq0 GTFOplan #55: What happened to our crew in St Helena!? https://youtu.be/xn_6SksMSrs CURRENT LOCATION: https://forecast.predictwind.com/tracking/display/SV-GTFO/ ABOUT OUR CATAMARAN: We love our new Balance 482 - it's a perfect size for a cruising couple to handle and is a great "balance" of performance and comfort. One of our favorite features is the excellent ventilation since we mostly live as "hookers" (aka at anchor) where the boat automatically turns into the wind so we stay cool and we don't need to battle mold. We also have starlink for easy off-grid life. Our 2400 watt solar panel array also means we rarely need to run an engine to charge our batteries. ABOUT US: We saved for a our future boat, sold everything that we owned, and shipped the rest in a container to Cape Town, South Africa. We then flew there and explored South Africa by way of a safari and touring Cape Town before moving aboard our boat. We then sailed to Saint Helena, Ascension Island, Fernando de Naronha (Brazil), Martinique, Sint Maarten (Dutch and French side), the US Virgin Islands (Saint Croix, Saint John, and Saint Thomas), the British Virgin Islands (Anegada, Norman Island, Jost van Dyke, and Anegada), The Bahamas (Inagua, Crooked Island, Long Island, George Town, Staniel Cay, the Exumas, and Eleuthera). We then sailed back to the United States, making landfall in Cape Canaveral, Florida. From there our destinations are endless! Both Dennis and Ann grew up military brats with Army fathers. Dennis (the Colonel) served 30 years in the US Army and his retirement pension helped us retire in our 50s. Ann (the ship's Captain) wrote Test Automation in Python and Java. Dennis and Ann met on Match.com where Ann had in her profile "Do you want to sail the world with me?" Ann easily brought Dennis into sailing, and he loved the GTFOplan of retiring early and sailing the world. After many years of saving, living on one income but earning two, and cutting back on everything possible, they saved enough to buy a Balance 482. Follow them as they get real about boat life and all the hassles of buying a new boat because we all know N.E.W. means Not Everything Works.
