We depart Kuala Terengganu with an unforgettable farewell, passing back through the drawbridge as crowds line the roadway and local boats escort us out. It’s a heartfelt send-off that perfectly captures the warmth of this incredible city. Heading south, the wind finally arrives — but straight on the nose — turning the sail into a slow and uncomfortable slog. As conditions build, we spot a small sheltered river protected by a brand-new breakwater and decide to slip inside. It proves to be a hidden gem: a perfectly calm, secure anchorage that gives us one of our best night’s sleep in days. At first light, we set off toward Tarempa in the Anambas Islands on an overnight passage. After a long night at sea, dawn brings us into a bustling shipping lane, where we carefully weave between tankers and freighters before making our final approach. Once checked into Indonesia, we’re invited to join the lively E-Festival — parading through town with the locals before a welcome dinner that’s suddenly interrupted by a classic tropical downpour! We finish with a full day exploring Siantan Island, visiting the Grand Mosque, the charming Dusun stilt village, the towering Temburun Waterfall, and the tiny town of Arung. This time on Sailing Intermission we stayed near Savannah to wait for Hurricane Ian to pass. We were very lucky as the storm went around us and sent only some wind and rain our way. When the hurricane was a day away we thought about racing ahead to Charleston. It made a certain amount of sense to do that at the time. We are glad we decided to stay put in Savannah instead. Our hearts go out to those who were impacted by the storm, it was horribly destructive. Except for a loose connection where the exhaust riser meets the engine, our diesel Cummins 4BT-3.9M received a clean bill of health from the mechanic. Steve wrapped exhaust tape around the connection and secured the tape with a hose clamp. Now, it’s good to go! With the delays of waiting for a mechanic and staying put during the storm, we decided we will go south and leave Isabella in a safe harbor while we travel to the Annapolis Sailboat Show.
