Surviving Tropical Storm Brett! Engine Failures, Water Maker Breakdown & Hurricane Prep | Banana Pancakes Sailing Description: In this thrilling episode of Banana Pancakes Sailing, we face our most challenging adventure yet! The morning starts off sweetly as we find Easton and Karver snuggled up fast asleep on the couch. But peace quickly turns to chaos as we lift anchor in heavy winds and set sail towards a new anchorage in Martinique. With one engine down, a broken generator, and a failing water maker, things aren't looking good. We anchor on the outskirts, but the situation turns dangerous when we discover our boat is stuck sideways on a rock with a failed engine. Our only option? Drop a backup anchor and pray it holds through the night. With our friends on Orion (an 80ft Catamaran) directly behind us, it's a sleepless, nerve-wracking night. But just when we think things can't get worse, we learn Tropical Storm Brett is heading our way. With our boat barely functional, it's a race against time to make repairs, provision, and find shelter. Despite engine failures, a broken generator, and a water maker that won't work, we manage to get one engine running. With our friends from Colette sticking by our side, we make a bold run for Marigot Bay, St. Lucia-one of the best hurricane holes in the Caribbean. The journey there is unexpectedly fun-jokes over the radio, good sailing vibes, and Easton rocking his "lucky" fishing underwear (but still no fish). We finally reach the safety of Marigot Bay and prepare for the worst, setting lines, dropping anchors, and hunkering down. Despite all the chaos, we find moments of peace and gratitude. We hit the gym, the kids wing foil and swim, and we enjoy dinners at the marina. When the storm finally hits, it feels like a whisper rather than a roar. We wake up to a serene sunrise and beautiful calm waters. This episode is all about pushing through challenges, overcoming setbacks, and finding beauty and gratitude in the journey. It's another chapter of our wild, unpredictable sailing life-one we wouldn't trade for anything. Watch until the end for some of the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets we've ever seen! After touring a bit of the island of Penang last week, we now have a bumpy passage north to Langkawi, where we prepare the boat for us to spend some time away. The rest of this episode is a bit of a departure from the typical sailing content and covers our vacation back to Canada during October-November. Due to flight scheduling, we have to overnight in Singapore, and we decide to take the opportunity to tour Singapore's famed Changi International Airport, primarily the area known as the Jewel. The Jewel has an amazing architecture and ambiance, including a tall indoor waterfall, greenery, and food, and a movie theatre. On return to Canada, starting in Ontario, we visit a conservation area, seeing some interactive wildlife, do some outdoor jobs with Kevin's family, and enjoy a Canadian Thanksgiving gathering. Then in New Brunswick there's more work to do including roof upgrades, volunteering at the ski chalet, making pies, fixing and replacing a door, and picking some Beattie Potatoes. IN THIS VIDEO: Join us aboard our Balance catamaran GoTFO?? as we sail to Dominica and overtake other boats with style ?. In this episode, we explain how to use daggerboards for optimal performance-raise the daggerboard to the sky with the blue line, and send it to hell with the red line! ?? As we pass Dominica's mountainous terrain, we go from 20+ knots of wind to a total wind shadow-classic island effect! We show how to adjust daggerboards in these shifting conditions to maintain speed and control. ? We grab a mooring ball in Roseau, and Ann navigates solo by dinghy to check us into Dominica customs-with a little help from a local legend named Ken. Meanwhile, Dennis and Schatzi explore ashore and meet fellow YouTubers: ? Green Room Pythons? D?v Kaufman Eats the World ?? Then we tour Dominica with THE Rick James-no, not that Rick James (but yes, that riff of "Super Freak" makes an appearance ?). Our incredible highlights: - Real vanilla extract from a roadside stand - Dominica's upcoming aerial tramway - Twin Trafalgar Waterfalls ? - Sulfur springs & hot springs - Freshwater Lake and hydroelectric pipes - Hummingbirds, bamboo homes, sausage trees & a parrot sanctuary - Titou Gorge - where Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest was filmed ???? - And much more? ? After releasing our mooring, we sail 20 miles north to Portsmouth, Dominica, reefing along the way-Ann explains our easy zip tie reefing system. Once there, we enjoy:? Lobster at Waterfront Reggae Spot (call ahead!)? Steak dinner (compliments of the Captain!)? Party on the bow under the stars Next stop: Guadeloupe! One of our favorite features is the excellent ventilation since we mostly live as "hookers" (aka at anchor) where the boat automatically turns into the wind so we stay cool and we don't need to battle mold. We also have starlink for easy off-grid life. Our 2400 watt solar panel array also means we rarely need to run an engine to charge our batteries. ABOUT US: We saved for a our future boat, sold everything that we owned, and shipped the rest in a container to Cape Town, South Africa. We then flew there and explored South Africa by way of a safari and touring Cape Town before moving aboard our boat. We then sailed to Saint Helena, Ascension Island, Fernando de Naronha (Brazil), Martinique, Sint Maarten (Dutch and French side), the US Virgin Islands (Saint Croix, Saint John, and Saint Thomas), the British Virgin Islands (Anegada, Norman Island, Jost van Dyke, and Anegada), The Bahamas (Inagua, Crooked Island, Long Island, George Town, Staniel Cay, the Exumas, and Eleuthera). We then sailed back to the United States, making landfall in Cape Canaveral, Florida. From there our destinations are endless! Both Dennis and Ann grew up military brats with Army fathers. Dennis (the Colonel) served 30 years in the US Army and his retirement pension helped us retire in our 50s. Ann (the ship's Captain) wrote Test Automation in Python and Java. Dennis and Ann met on Match.com where Ann had in her profile "Do you want to sail the world with me?" Ann easily brought Dennis into sailing, and he loved the GTFOplan of retiring early and sailing the world. After many years of saving, living on one income but earning two, and cutting back on everything possible, they saved enough to buy a Balance 482. Follow them as they get real about boat life and all the hassles of buying a new boat because we all know N.E.W. means Not Everything Works. It was a difficult passage from Fiji to New Zealand. The first three days I was very seasick. At first it felt like sailing in a washing machine. The waves came from all sides. It was beam reach all the way. I had two 40 ft boats as wingmen. During the day they came closer to me. During the night they furled their jib in and I kept on sailing with the same setup. Around 4 pm the wind picked up to 20-24 knots and all night I sailed around 6 - 7 knots of speed. If you like my videos, please subscribe to my YouTube channel. In this episode we continue our sailing holiday from Seglinge to Brunskär. Sailing was satisfying as we had good wind from nice direction that took us quickly to our destination. Having spent night at Brunskär, we continued our voyage to Trunsö.
