Our dinghy died miles from our sailboat as darkness closed in and a massive lightning storm rolled toward us. Then our hair began standing straight up—the terrifying warning that lightning could strike at any moment. What was supposed to be a simple family sailing trip from Miami to Key Largo for key lime pie quickly became one of the scariest nights we’ve experienced on the water. The day began perfectly. We left Miami early, spotted dolphins, and motored across a glassy ocean toward the Florida Keys. Our only real plan was to anchor in Key Largo, explore town, and find the best key lime pie we could. But boat life had other plans. After finally getting our unreliable dinghy started, we crossed some questionable water, found a dinghy dock, and walked to the Key Lime Pie Factory. When we returned, the dinghy engine wouldn’t start. We spent over an hour troubleshooting it, but nothing worked. With darkness approaching and lightning flashing around us, we had only one option: paddle all the way back to our catamaran. At first, everyone was laughing and making jokes. But as the wind picked up, the waves grew, our phones began dying, and the boat still looked impossibly far away, the mood changed. Then Malia’s hair started standing straight up—one of the warning signs of an imminent lightning strike. We were exhausted, scared, and completely exposed on the water. More than an hour later, we finally reached our sailboat safely…only to discover that our generator had stopped working. By morning, our watermaker had failed too, leaving our family without running water or flushing toilets. Just another peaceful day of living on a boat. 😂 But this episode isn’t all boat problems and terrifying storms. We enjoy our first family sunset dinner on the flybridge, sail through the Gulf Stream, and watch the boys catch a beautiful bonita—and then hook into the biggest fish they’ve ever fought! We finish the adventure back in Miami, where we dress up for one final night with Malia and Hayden before their early flight to Boise. Saying goodbye to our daughter was harder than we expected. It’s one thing for her to leave for college. It’s another knowing that we’re the ones sailing away and will soon be in another country. This episode captures everything about full-time family sailing: incredible beauty, complete chaos, broken boat systems, deep-sea fishing, terrifying weather, and the family moments that make every struggle worth it. If you enjoy family sailing adventures, catamaran living, offshore fishing, Florida Keys travel, and the honest reality of living aboard a sailboat, subscribe and join the Sailing Banana Pancakes crew! Next week, we begin making our way north along the East Coast—but as usual, nothing goes according to plan. ⚓ Subscribe and follow our family as we sail the world 👍 Like this video if you would have paddled through the storm for key lime pie 💬 Tell us below: What would you have done when the dinghy stopped working? #FamilySailing #BoatLife #SailingAdventure

In this episode we remove our battleborn batteries and replace them with Victron NG lithium batteries here in Phuket. There has been a lot of drama surrounding our old batteries, including YouTuber Will Prowse getting sued for simply testing and commenting on their batteries, so I am glad to have all of that behind me now. Welcome back aboard Moor R & R for this week's Adventure! Episode 43 We’ve watched the wind, waited for the seas to settle, and dreamed about finally getting Moor R & R back out onto the Reef. And today… we finally get our chance. It was worth the wait. With the weather finally on our side, we leave Cairns behind and make our way out to Vlasoff Cay… A stunning sand cay rising from crystal-clear water, surrounded by beautiful coral and reef stretching out as far as the eye can see. But the real highlight of our reef adventure was something I never expected… I jumped into that crystal-clear water and found myself swimming alongside a group of batfish. It was one of those moments you simply can't plan for — and one we'll never forget. So come aboard Moor R & R for this week’s adventure, and experience the magic of the reef with us. Come along for the highs and lows of life at sea – the joy of community, the challenge of sailing, and all the fun we get up too !!! We joined the YOT 53 on her delivery run to Cannes, at sea, before the doors opened. This is the first real look at YOT's new power catamaran. The YOT 53 makes her European debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival, and we got aboard early. We ran her along the French Côte d'Azur, watched her come alongside the YOT 36 and YOT 41, and got a first look at the features YOT has built this boat around. A first look at a power catamaran designed to challenge what a 53-footer is supposed to be: fold-out side wings that widen the cockpit at the touch of a button, an owner's cabin that opens onto its own private terrace, a flybridge that feels like a whole extra deck, and a systems package built around 48-volt power and centralized digital control. Type: Inboard power catamaran, flybridge Naval architecture / design: JNJ Design with Catana Group Length: 53 ft (approx. 16 m) Beam: 7.25 m CE category: A (ocean) Engines: Twin Yanmar inboards, 440 hp or 550 hp, shaft drive Layouts: 3-cabin owner's version or 4-cabin version Owner's cabin: Full-beam forward suite, king berth, en suite, lounge area, direct access to private bow terrace Salon: Up-and-over tilting aft door connecting salon and cockpit Galley: U-shaped, forward in the salon Flybridge: Helm station, lounging, dining, optional wet bar and grill Electrical: Optional 48V lithium system with silent air conditioning, no generator required Built: CatanaGroup facility in Aveiro, Portugal The YOT 53 is on display at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2026 at the Vieux Port September 8 to 13, running September 8 to 13, 2026, in Cannes, France. Today it's time to sail north east ,from Ilfracombe to Watchet. The weather was fair but the wind was poor, but at least not "on the nose"! Interesting bits on heaving to, to drop the mainsail, and getting the harbour approach at the right angle to avoid the shallows Please support this channel if you like this sort of stuff: 1. It rarely looks easy when we watch other people do it. How does refitting our rudder and the bronze skeg shoe with the bottom bearing go? 3rd September and launching on the 10th. We will be at the Southampton International Boat Show with @The_Ghostship, @sailingsolice and more. We will be giving a couple of talks and be around most of the show. Now we just need to launch and sail from Anglesey to Southampton! We are now living aboard our Rival 38 Centre Cockpit full-time while finishing a refit so we can launch ASAP. Should You Consider Buying an Ex-Charter Boat? Fountaine Pajot Aura 51 and Behind the Scene Surve...
Wiley Sharp and Keagan Steyn are back with another episode of Cat Chat Live: Life Between the Hulls. They open by comparing this summer's noticeably busier buyer activity to last year's slower season, then dig into what actually goes into prepping for a survey — from wrangling a haul-out slip for a 65+ foot cat headed up to Newport, RI (Keagan's first survey north of Florida) to the small logistics, dockage, food, confirming who's showing up, that keep survey day running smoothly. This week's Make & Model spotlight is the Fountaine Pajot Aura 51. Wiley and Keagan compare it to its predecessor, the Saba 50, and talk through the five-cabin charter layout, integrated solar without an added array, the new electric drive option, and how it holds up under sail. In the FAQ segment, they tackle a question they field constantly: is buying a boat out of charter a smart move? They break down bareboat vs. crewed charter fleets, why maintenance records and crew longevity matter more than people assume, and why boats coming out of smaller boutique operators often turn out better-loved than ones from the mega-fleets. They close with their Brokerage Picks of the Week: two very different Aura 51s — Vienna, an ex-charter five-cabin boat in the BVI, and a private four-cabin Aura 51 ready to cruise out of Fort Lauderdale. Got a topic you want covered on Cat Chat Live? Drop Wiley and Keagan a note — and if you're enjoying the show, subscribe and leave a review.
We’ve crossed the Bay of Biscay and made it to Spain 🇪🇸⛵️… but now there’s something else on our minds — ORCAS! 👀🐋 As we continue our family sailing adventure aboard Sea-Kat, our Lagoon 410 catamaran, we start making our way down the Spanish coast — an area where sailors have reported encounters and interactions with orcas. So when we spot something in the water… you can imagine what goes through our heads! 😳 Did we actually see orcas? You’ll have to watch to find out! 👀 Join us for another episode of life aboard Sea-Kat as we explore Spain by sailing boat, navigate the realities of living aboard with two young children and continue our journey towards the Mediterranean. We’re Lily & Joe, sailing Sea-Kat with our two little girls, Prim & Pearl. We left the UK to live aboard our Lagoon 410 catamaran and sail our way through Europe as a family. If you enjoy family sailing, sailing with kids, liveaboard life, catamaran sailing and real-life sailing adventures, SUBSCRIBE and come along with us! ❤️⛵️
Sieben Tage. 📍 Etappe: Lohme → Breege (Rügen) ⛵ Yacht: Bavaria Cruiser 40 📅 Aufgenommen: 27. I bought the cheapest solid-core doors I could find to save money—but installing the first one turns into an all-day fight. We travel halfway around the island of Antigua, part of the Leeward Islands/Lesser Antilles of the Caribbean, to be there in Falmouth Harbour for the start of the RORC 600 sailboat race. As it turned out, this was also ground zero for more expensive boats and yachts than we could shake a stick at. It was absolutely great boat watching, and we only captured the ones that happened by when we had a camera ready. And the funny part about it is, all joking aside, we’d take our life aboard Talisman over any of these boats. Viewers might ask why, and the answer, for us at least, is that our boat is about as big as a cruising couple can handle on their own. Yes, we could go probably go to 65’ or so, and other couples do, but the power and expense increases astronomically as you go bigger. And the idea of sharing such a cramped space with professional crew just isn’t our thing. But we do love seeing the life. The superyachts hemorrhage money wherever they go, and thousands of families get fed as a result. It’s a topic that could be argued on both sides for hours over beers and cocktails. And to viewers that see us out, ask to join us for a beer and we’ll do just that. Fun times ahead on that front. #sailing yacht talisman, #sailing, #sailing YouTube, #boating, #top sailing, #oyster yachts, #oyster sailboats, #oyster 485, #offshore, #bluewater, #blue water, #sailing vlog, #sailing vblog, #sailing videos, #cruising, #monohull, #boat projects, #offshore how to, #boat life, #defender, #antigua, #jolly harbour, #falmouth, #dead batteries, #expensive boats, #rorc 600, #sailboat anchoring
This episode is the first in a three part series on the construction and installation of the rudder and tiller assembly. The first episode (ep 24) covers the making of the silicon bronze hardware for the rudder. This includes: making wooden patterns, sand-molding and casting, machining, hand-filing, buffing and finishing the 4 gudgeons needed for the large hinge that will attach the rudder to the boat.
