Hammerfest is a fascinating Arctic town in northern Norway, often described as one of the world’s northernmost towns. It is known for its midnight sun in summer, polar night in winter, and an ice-free harbor despite its far-north location. Copyright John Beltran „ Clouds pull“ The Struve Geodetic Arc at Fuglenes, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of its notable landmarks. It sits far above the Arctic Circle, yet it has a living community, a working port, and modern industry, including the LNG site on Melkøya
Join us aboard Indara, our Najad 380, as we sail from beautiful Sivota Bay in Lefkada to the historic town of Nafpaktos. This episode is less about stunning drone footage and more about sharing the real cruising experience. Throughout the passage, I explain what we're doing, what to expect along the route, and provide practical tips for fellow sailors. One of the highlights is our transit beneath the impressive Rio-Antirrio Bridge, including the complete VHF communication with Rion Traffic Control so you can hear exactly how the process works. After passing the bridge, we continue to Nafpaktos where we anchor for the night, ending the day with beautiful evening views of one of Greece's most picturesque harbours. If you're planning to sail through the Gulf of Patras or visit Nafpaktos, we hope this video helps you prepare for your own adventure. ⚓ Boat: Najad 380 "Indara" 📍 Route: Sivota Bay (Lefkada) → Rio-Antirrio Bridge → Nafpaktos 🌍 Sailing around Greece while living and working full-time aboard. I rebuilt the data from yet another failed CD that I committed all my memories to 25 years ago. It goes to show you that how important moments in time are. I needed something to store seasonal clothes and blankets in and thought of another trunk. I came across a pristine Secor Champion Wall Trunk from 1903 and doled out the cash in a blink of an eye. These trunks are highly sought after and I was lucky to get this one, and the best part, there was nothing that had to be fixed or restored. The M.M. Secor Trunk Company was a major late-19th-century trunk and traveling bag manufacturer in Racine, Wisconsin, founded in 1861 by Bohemian immigrant Martin Mathias Secor (1841–1911). Known for producing durable, stylish trunks like the "Champion Wall Trunk," the company became one of the largest in the Midwest. M.M. Secor trunks are highly prized by antique collectors, often recognized by their specialized nailhead trim, embossed metal panels, and robust construction. And like all trunks, they carried a history. What stories could this one tell? Who owned it? Where had it traveled? What treasures once rested inside? Some answers were written on the trunk tray. A rare find indeed. Another trunk rescued, another trunk ready to collect new moments in time." Subscribe and share in our adventure!
In this episode, hosts Bela Musits and Mike Wasserman dive deep into one of the most iconic offshore challenges in the sailing world: the Marion to Bermuda Race. Joining the conversation is seasoned sailor Ray Cullum, who shares his extensive experience navigating this prestigious 645-mile blue-water event. Whether you are a competitive racer or an aspiring coastal cruiser looking to head offshore, Ray’s insights into preparation, Gulf Stream strategy, and the unique spirit of this race are invaluable. The Marion to Bermuda Race is renowned for its focus on celestial navigation and its "family and friends" atmosphere, setting it apart from other offshore competitions. Ray breaks down what it takes to prepare both the vessel and the crew for the unpredictable conditions of the North Atlantic. From heavy weather tactics to the mental endurance required for multi-day offshore passages, this episode covers the essential elements of successful blue-water sailing. Bela, Mike, and Ray also discuss the intricacies of crossing the Gulf Stream—a pivotal and often daunting segment of the journey to Bermuda. Ray shares his approach to analyzing weather routing and current data to find the most efficient path through the "river in the ocean." We also explore the gear and safety protocols that are non-negotiable for an offshore voyage of this magnitude. Beyond the technical aspects, this episode captures the allure of the destination itself. Arriving in Bermuda after days at sea is a milestone for any sailor, and Ray describes the sense of accomplishment and the camaraderie that awaits at the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club. If you’ve ever dreamed of leaving the coast behind and heading for the deep blue, this conversation will provide the inspiration and practical knowledge you need to start planning your own Marion to Bermuda adventure. About the Guest: Ray Cullum is a veteran sailor with a wealth of experience in offshore racing and coastal cruising. His passion for the sea and commitment to the sailing community make him a sought-after voice for anyone looking to improve their seamanship and navigation skills. Key Topics Discussed: Preparation and safety requirements for the Marion to Bermuda Race. Strategies for navigating the Gulf Stream and interpreting weather data. The importance of crew dynamics and watch rotations during offshore passages. Celestial navigation vs. modern electronics in traditional racing. The rewards of finishing a major offshore race in Bermuda. We’ve got just 21 hours at Beveridge Reef — barely enough time to rest before preparing for what’s coming next: a low-pressure system we’re trying to outrun. After a squally night in big seas, we finally make landfall in Niue. But even as we arrive, the weather is already closing in… and the question becomes whether we’ll be forced to move again sooner than we’d like. NEW TO OUR CHANNEL? We are Eileen and Brown Councill. Welcome to our channel and a glimpse into our life adventure! 2020 was a year of uncertainty and change (for all of us, right?), but we overcame the challenges and decided it was time to chase our dream, to sail around the world! Did I mention that we had very NO sailing experience? Before leaving Qingdao, China, our home of 4 years, we sold almost all of our earthly possessions and started our international search to find the right sailboat that we would call "home." After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia. So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. We have much to learn as we travel the world on our floating home and we intend to document that journey and share it with you. We are so glad you have decided to join us, and we hope that you will find our story so compelling that it will inspire you to chase your dreams too! As a viewer, we consider you to be part of our family and look forward to getting to know you. Don't hesitate to comment on our videos and ask questions. We will do our best to answer every correspondence! All we ask is that you have patience with us as we work really hard to improve our camera/video techniques and ability to tell a story.

Whether you’re sailing solo or double-handed, it is perfect for your adventures at sea or on a lake! Boat of the Year Award | Best Innovation | by Sailing World U.S.A. "The thing was a blast. I couldn't believe how well it sailed. You could have some serious fun with this, especially in big breeze." -------------------------- ** The Tiwal story ** * The Birth of Tiwal * As a girl, the first time our founder Marion Excoffon was told, “No!” by her father when she asked to use the family boat, her life as an inventor began. It was then she started dreaming of building her own craft, an ambitious feat that would come true years later. On the road to creating an innovative high-speed vessel for everyone from kids and first timers to expert sailors who want to test limits, there were a number of prototypes, failures, challenges and headaches. But, if there’s one thing Marion’s known for, it’s her sailor’s grit! * Combining Fun & Technology * The award winning Tiwal concept is easy assembly and storage - maximum fun and performance for watersports and activities. A Tiwal isn’t your average dinghy! Our design is the result of tons of coordination, talent, and technological savvy. * A Growing Global Community * For our community of Tiwal skippers (more than 2,500 worldwide!) all this innovative design means their focus is fixed on the pleasures of watersports and having tons of fun on a responsive sailing craft. With excellent upwind and downwind abilities combined with high-speeds, Tiwals are a part of both fun and professional performance. The Tiwal 3 received the Boat of the Year (Best innovation) Award 2014 from Sailing World in the USA and the Red Dot Award, with recognitions, accolades, and smiling faces continuing to join together on the waves worldwide. Leaving the boat behind in Luperón, Dominican Republic, was supposed to be the easy part—until the travel nightmare actually started. Between crazy 4:00 AM Uber rides, major flight delays sitting on the tarmac at JFK, and missing our rental car window in Virginia, getting back to the US turned into total chaos. Worst of all? We were racing against the clock to pick up our senior dog, Bella, who was being transported separately by a specialized pet air transport service. After long walks on road shoulders for food, overpriced rideshares, and non-stop travel stress, we finally made it to Pender to bring our girl home. #DominicanRepublic #PetTravel #DogReunion #TravelVlog #SailingLife #JFKDelays #LeesburgVA #BoatLife Timestamps [00:00] – Securing the boat, getting ready at 4 AM, and heading out of the marina.
