After relocating the boat to Raiatea last week, a priority was finally seeing a doctor about a persistent fungus or parasite that had been plaguing me for five months. In this episode, we meticulously follow the prescribed treatment, determined to get rid of it for good. The second half of our week was a fantastic mix of local flavor and culture. We enjoyed a great meal at a restaurant beloved by cruisers—and which has arguably the best bathroom in all of French Polynesia! After that, we took a scenic drive around the island enjoying the locals and the views. But the highlight, was finally getting to attend the opening ceremony of the Raiatea Heiva festival. After an early start in Swanage, Dorset, we set out for a casual wander along the coast. We didn’t expect to go far… but the path led us through a lovely stretch of woodland and eventually to Durlston Castle, about a mile down the coast. The castle itself was closed (and we stumbled across a parkrun on the way!), so we turned back to Swanage. But sometimes life doesn't go as planned. In the spring of 2020, I was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. Suddenly, my life accelerated considerably. I sold my house, cleared out my belongings, and began purchasing mountains of sailing equipment. “Cast off!” was planned for early March 2021—and that's how it turned out, despite COVID-19. Brigitta was completely surprised, of course, even though sailing around the world fit much better into her professional life than mine. Over the next six months, however, Brigitta made an amazing transformation and is now just as excited about our big adventure as I am. We have now been traveling for a total of four and a half years. One adventure follows another, and we enjoy every day anew. In search of freedom and independence, a thirst for adventure, and a connection to nature, we – Brigitta and Hannes – are sailing around the world together. For this circumnavigation, we bought the Lagoon 40 MariaNoa catamaran, with which we set off on the Barfußroute from the French Atlantic coast at the beginning of March 2021.
