I had never heard of this book before finding it here in the Mariner's Library but 'The Cruises of the Joan' seems to have attached a lot of very positive comments from contemporary literary critics & sailors alike when it was released. W.E.Sinclair has what commentators at the time refer to as  'a humble style in his approach to recording his voyages'. However, as his mileage increases with journeys throughout Scotland and round the British Isles, it becomes increasingly apparent that his delicately chosen prose is actually perfectly suited to allow even a reader 100 years hence to enter the story, share in the adventure and vicariously live through what promises to be some otherwise unbelievable adventures off the coasts of Iceland, Greenland and Newfoundland later on in the book. This book is the chronicle of W.A. Robinson setting off on his 32 footer 'Svaap' from Panama, then taking two years to circumnavigate the world, during the interwar years.  It is a wonderfully written and diligent account, by a sailor who, although initially advertising himself as 'not a writer', goes on to produce the most wonderfully vivid and heartfelt story, that even now, a hundred years later, still stirs the soul to adventures beyond the West horizon. This is just one example of the many different ways a dinghy/ tender can be tied up to a wall, or near a boat ramp without being in every boats way. Great for tying up a small boat in a tidal area. In addition to a painter (bow dockline) a small anchor can be a wonderful versatile too to avoid damage from walls and barnacles. Please note- don't use this over seagrass, or in the fairway where boats will motor. Use common sense and think about other water users.

This Catana 42, 'Bubu 2.0', is a carbon-infused high-performance catamaran comprehensively fitted out with premium gear for serious cruising. At first glance, the 42 may not look different from other catamarans in her size range, but once the sails are hoisted, the difference is clear. Thanks to its ideal beam-to-length ratio, adjustable daggerboards, tulip-shaped bows, and torpedo-shaped hulls, she is powerful yet light, and robust yet responsive. The daggerboards, in particular, deliver outstanding upwind performance. Her powerful single-spreader sloop rig carries a Hydranet mainsail and genoa, a lightweight furling genoa, furling Code D, and electric winches. Navigation is handled by an exhaustive NKE Marine Electronics suite, a benchmark in offshore racing and performance cruising. Communication and safety are equally well covered, with an extensive communications pack, infrared and interior cameras, Starlink, life raft, EPIRB, and more. Under power, 'Bubu 2.0' is equipped with twin 40 hp Volvo Penta saildrive diesels, supported by a generator, hydro generator, inverter, lithium batteries, solar panels, and a Victron Gebo CX energy management system. Further equipment includes a water maker, tender with outboard, davits, covers, complete cockpit enclosure, cockpit cushions and sunbeds for the coach roof. Also worth mentioning is the ton of storage on this boat including a big locker under the cockpit sole and a trio more forward. A big sliding-glass door provides entrance to the saloon offering a 360º panoramic view. There’s a nice forward-facing nav station to port; a dining table and settee to starboard; and a rear-facing galley aft that’s connected to the outdoor living areas through another sliding window. Natural light and ventilation fill the saloon and the cabins, while a Webasto heating system ensures comfort on cooler days. Descend the stairways in the starboard hull to access forward and aft guest cabins, which are separated by a storage locker and a shared bathroom with wash basin, electric toilet and shower facility. The entire port hull is dedicated to the owner’s suite, featuring a spacious double cabin aft and a generous forward bathroom with washbasin, manual toilet, and shower. Compact yet complete, 'Bubu 2.0' packs remarkable performance, technology, and liveaboard comfort into 42 feet, making her a standout in her class.

PG caught up with Andreas, International Sales Manager for Quick Group, right outside the Marex stand at the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show. 📍 Marex builds in Lithuania and has a strong U.S. presence — and they’re now fitting the MC² Quick Gyro X16 across their fleet. What sealed the deal? ✔️ Air cooling ✔️ Smaller footprint ✔️ Easier servicing ✔️ Consistent performance Deliveries started last December, and more are already underway. As PG says — do your homework. Marex did, and they’ve chosen Quick. Talk to the Gineico team and find out why Quick is the fastest-growing gyro brand in the world. #quick https://zurl.co/Q2yLG #gineico_Marine #quickitaly #quickgyro #quickgyrostabiliser #Yachts #Superyacht #marineaccessories #experience #madeinitaly #virtualshowroom #production #nauticalequipment #accessories #yacht #boat #lifestyle #luxury #elegance #italydesign #gyro #stabilizerGineico Marine represent leading Italian heavy duty marine hardware in Australia and New Zealand.

This week marks the beginning of a whole new chapter in our sailing adventure. We finally transferred everything we own from GOAT 1.0, our beloved Bavaria 44, into GOAT 2.0, our newly purchased Lagoon 400 catamaran. It’s amazing how much stuff a sailboat accumulates over time—and moving it all was no small task. Finding a place for everything on a catamaran is both an art and a challenge. But little by little, GOAT 2.0 began to feel like home. Once we had all our belongings aboard, we dove into the biggest job of all: the complete electronics installation and migration. ⚓ NEW ELECTRONICS INSTALLED ON GOAT 2.0 Icom MA-510TR Class B AIS Transponder The Icom MA-510TR is a full-featured Class B AIS transceiver with a built-in GPS receiver, target list display, collision alarm, and integrated DSC functionality. With its color display and NMEA2000 connectivity, it provides real-time awareness of nearby vessels, helping us navigate safely through busy Mediterranean shipping lanes. Key Specs: Class B AIS with 5W transmit power 4.3-inch color TFT display NMEA2000 & NMEA0183 interface Built-in GPS receiver Collision alarm and CPA/TCPA data B&G V100 VHF Marine Radio The B&G V100 is a modular VHF radio system designed for sailboats, offering crystal-clear communication and multi-station expandability. We installed one station at the helm and another at the navigation desk. Key Specs: Modular design with up to 8 handsets & 4 external speakers Built-in AIS receiver (optional) NMEA2000 networking for full integration 60-second “replay” of last transmission Waterproof (IPX7 rated) B&G Halo 24 Radar For safety and situational awareness, we installed the B&G Halo 24 Pulse Compression Radar—one of the most advanced marine radars on the market. It provides near-instant 360° sweeps every second and can detect targets as close as 6 meters and as far as 48 nautical miles. Key Specs: 24-inch dome with Pulse Compression technology Range: 6m to 48nm VelocityTrack™ target speed tracking InstantOn™ mode for immediate use Dual-range operation for near and far targets simultaneously Aqua Pro Onboard PC To power all navigation and data management, we installed an Aqua Pro fanless onboard marine PC, built to run 24/7 in marine environments. This small but powerful system manages all onboard software, including charts, navigation, Signal K data, and our Grafana dashboards. Key Specs: Rugged, fanless aluminum case (IP65-rated) Low-power Intel CPU with solid-state storage Dual HDMI + multiple USB & NMEA inputs 12V DC power input for direct marine integration Raspberry Pi 5 Navigation & Monitoring System Our Raspberry Pi-based setup is the heart of the GOAT data ecosystem. It runs Signal K, integrating all NMEA2000 data (wind, depth, AIS, battery status, and more) and feeding our Grafana dashboards for real-time performance tracking. Key Components: Raspberry Pi 5 (8GB RAM) running Signal K & Grafana NMEA2000 USB gateway Custom scripts for data logging and automation Linked to our onboard PC for redundancy and backup Iridium GO! Satellite Communicator For offshore safety and communication, we reinstalled our Iridium GO!, a satellite-based communication device that provides text, email, GPS tracking, and weather data anywhere in the world. Key Specs: Global coverage via Iridium satellite network SOS and emergency tracking Email, text, and GRIB weather downloads Wi-Fi connectivity for up to 5 devices Ideal for offshore passages and remote anchorages After days of wiring, configuring, and debugging, we finally brought the entire network online—NMEA2000, AIS, radar, navigation, and telemetry—all talking together again. Seeing everything light up and work perfectly was one of the most satisfying moments of the refit. Now GOAT 2.0 is alive, smarter than ever, and ready for the adventures ahead. IN THIS EPISODE: – Moving aboard our new Lagoon 400 catamaran – Installing the complete new navigation suite – Migrating our entire NMEA2000 sensor network – Setting up Raspberry Pi & Signal K for real-time monitoring – The satisfaction (and frustration) of bringing a boat back to life FOLLOW OUR JOURNEY: Instagram Sailing & Tech: @sailing_svgoat Instagram Lifestyle: @nobodysride Facebook: Sailing SV GOAT
