INSIDE GREAT LAKES SAILING SEASON SEVEN SHOW NO. 151 - We begin our seventh season early, much like 2026, because we have an interview of note that we thought should see the light of day and since Mother Nature has even us ardent skiers crouched near the resort fire place, here's our first installment for the new year. Inside Great Lakes Sailing was proud to interview Marcus Lynch, the appointed head of US Sailing's Olympic arm two years ago and we struck gold, so to speak, twice, because we are the first to bring you a video interview of the latest to lead US Sailing Olympians, Molly Vandemoer, a former World Champion and US Olympic team member. Molly was appointed US Sailings Olympic director by CEO Charlie Enright three weeks ago. The appointment of Ms. Vandemoer was a spectacular move by those who run US Sailing and you'll learn that for yourself by listening to her speak. We also wanted to leave you with some bar room chatter about PHRF and how US Sailing and the various regional handicapping bodies might work in a more harmonious way. Our resident sail boat handicapper, and former Barthel Trophy winner, Keith Stauber, stops in to raise the question, can we improve the PHRF process by crawling back into bed with US Sailing.....the conversation might scare you, so sit down in front of the television or the computer and take a break from the cold of winter and think about those warm summer breezes with Inside Great Lakes Sailing.

Stuck on the ICW through Georgia, we weren't offered much in terms of novel views. As we crossed the Savannah River into Georgia, we saw more marshland on the ICW, had more bald eagle and dolphin sightings, and we did our best to at least motor sail our way south. We did get to witness the recovery efforts of the capsized Golden Ray cargo ship, a disaster which resulted in more than $200 million in damage, caused by incorrect calculations about the vessel's stability. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We can't produce quality inspirational content indefinitely without the support of our fans. Go deeper on offshore boating prep: https://www.nauticed.org/bundle/view/captain?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=l7nHCpw7wfE Looking for offshore equipment check out LRSE: https://www.lrse.com What does EPIRB stand for? Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon. An EPIRB is a distress unit you activate when human life is in jeopardy. It transmits a specific 15-character ID (Hex ID) that cross-references a database, and with built-in GPS it sends your lat/long so rescuers know exactly where to look. EPIRBs can be sold with or without AIS transmission—and AIS is strongly recommended, because then not only rescue personnel know where you are, but boats in the vicinity can see your AIS signal on their display. We also cover how EPIRBs sit in brackets so they don’t accidentally activate, how they can be activated manually or by water activation, and the difference between Category 2 (manual deployment) and Category 1 (float-free) EPIRBs. Finally, we cover the lanyard: tie it to a life raft, ditch bag, or your wrist—but don’t tie it to the vessel, because if it’s underwater it won’t transmit. You want a clear view of the sky. 00:00 - EPIRB meaning + what it stands for 00:10 - When to activate (distress / life in jeopardy) 00:20 - How EPIRB's work (Transmits) 00:43 - AIS option (recommend AIS) 01:00 - Bracket mounting + magnet/relay prevents activation 01:22 - Activation methods: manual vs water activation 01:32 - Category 2 EPIRB (manual deploy) 01:44 - Category 1 EPIRB (float-free) 02:12 - Lanyard: tie to raft/ditch bag/wrist #offshoresailing #offshorefishing #sailing #boating #boat #sailinggear

Continuing our forecabin interior window frames. This should stop the gel coat crazing by adding stiffness. Plus it edges and supports the insulation. We are now living aboard our Rival 38 Centre Cockpit full-time while finishing a refit so we can launch ASAP. We have a frequently updated blog at https://sustainablesailing.net with membership options and a weekly newsletter at £2 per month for Early Bird Supporters. Our free Sustainable Sailing book is at: https://sustainablesailing.codeberg.page/ Or visit our shop at https://sustainablesailing.teemill.com/ for great hoodies, t-shirts and bags. When we bought Vida in August 2019 she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings (much of it not working). We have removed all the gas, diesel and paraffin equipment, and are installing all-electric (motor, cooking etc).

Fountaine Pajot - A little background: Fountaine Pajot is a French shipyard that has been building boats since 1976, so coming up on about 50 years now. Everything is built in La Rochelle, France, which is one of the biggest boatbuilding hubs in the world. They actually started out building racing dinghies, and then were one of the early companies to really push the cruising catamaran market back in the 80s. Today, they have launched over 4,000 boats worldwide, so it is a very proven brand with a strong global presence. And now this is their brand new 41, replacing the Isla 40 and Astrea 42 Intro: This is the brand new Fountaine Pajot 41. It’s the next evolution of their entry-level sailing catamaran, but it really doesn’t feel “entry-level” at all. They’ve taken what worked on the Astrea 42 and made it more efficient, easier to sail, and more comfortable to live on. Transom / Aft Platforms: • Standard Davits, or optional swim platform. First 40 ft FP to have factory swim platform, Isla 40 did not..... super easy water access, whether you’re swimming, diving, or getting on a dinghy. The big benefit here is usability, no climbing, no hassle, just straight in and out of the water. • Wide steps up into the cockpit make boarding from a dock or dinghy feel natural and safe. Cockpit: • Large aft cockpit with full dining table, this is where everyone ends up. The benefit is that you can comfortably seat a full group without feeling tight. • Seamless indoor-outdoor flow, no step between cockpit and saloon. That makes the whole boat feel bigger and more connected. • Optional cockpit enclosure extends your living space in bad weather or cooler climates. Saloon: • Big wraparound windows, tons of natural light. The benefit is that it never feels like you’re “below,” even when you are inside. • U-shaped galley facing the cockpit, whoever’s cooking is still part of the group. This is huge for entertaining. • Clean, modern finish options, lighter woods, and fabrics make the space feel even larger. Helm: • Raised helm station with great visibility, you can see all four corners of the boat. That makes docking and short-handed sailing way easier. • All lines led back to the helm; you can sail this boat without leaving the wheel. Big benefit for couples or small crews. • Hardtop with solar integration gives you shade and keeps your batteries topped off. Forward Deck: • Dedicated lounge area up front, not just trampolines. The benefit is another social zone, especially at anchor or underway in calm water. • Wide, safe walkways, easy to move around the boat without feeling exposed. Cabins (Maestro Owner’s Version): • Full owner’s hull, separate shower, large head, and tons of storage. The benefit is that it feels like a floating apartment, not just a boat cabin. • Big island bed with natural light, super comfortable for longer stays onboard. • Guest cabins on the opposite hull keep privacy between the owner and guests. Only a 40-footer to have walk-around beds in all cabins! Performance / Design: • Refined hull shape — gives you a smoother ride and better performance in light wind, as well as the new double hard chine really improves the volume in all cabins Closing: The new Fountaine Pajot 41 hits a really sweet spot. It’s easy to handle, comfortable to live on, and still feels like a premium boat. Whether you’re sailing with family, chartering, or doing longer trips, it just works. At The Multihull Company, we believe that a true blue-water catamaran shouldn't force you to choose between the thrill of the wind and the comforts of home. In this video, we invite you to discover the Privilège Way of Sailing—a philosophy rooted in the idea that your vessel should be as robust as a fortress and as refined as a luxury villa. The Soul of an Ocean Voyager A Privilège is not just built; it is engineered for the long haul. While many modern catamarans prioritize "condo-style" volume at the expense of seaworthiness, the Privilège range—including the iconic Signature 510 and 580—utilizes a unique structural backbone and a deep-V hull design. This ensures a smooth, "dry" ride even when the North Atlantic decides to get rowdy. What Defines the Privilège Experience? The Master Suite Revolution: Experience the legendary "Owner’s Sanctuary" located in the central pod. It offers a level of privacy, space, and quietude that is simply unmatched in the 50–60ft catamaran market. Artisan Craftsmanship: Every cabinet, joint, and surface is hand-finished in Les Sables-d'Olonne. We invite you to look inside the lockers and under the floorboards—the quality remains consistent even where the eye doesn't typically roam. Performance Under Pressure: With a high-aspect rig and optimized weight distribution, a Privilège maintains impressive passage-making speeds without the "hobby-horsing" common in lighter, less balanced designs. Safety by Design: From the reinforced bow sections to the intuitive, protected helm stations, every Privilège is built to be a safe haven for you and your family. Experience the Difference with The Multihull Company As the authorized partner for Privilège Marine, The Multihull Company (TMC) provides more than just a brokerage service. We offer a gateway to a lifestyle of refined adventure. Our team has sailed these waters and these boats—we know exactly why a Privilège stands alone at the top of the luxury catamaran market.
